Egg Lay is Yoshi's standard special move in the Super Smash Bros. series. It involves him sticking his tongue out, and if he grabs a fighter, Yoshi swallows them and lays an egg with them trapped inside; fighters with higher damage outputs are trapped in eggs for longer, but can escape sooner by pressing buttons.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Egg Lay has two custom variants:

  • Lick cannot grab fighters, but instead, Yoshi jumps forward and uses his tongue to attack nearby opponents.
  • Egg Launch enables Yoshi to launch opponents farther than normal after turning them into eggs. However, the trapped opponents can break free from the eggs more easily. This attack can be used to send opponents off-stage, which can potentially give Yoshi KOs if his target's horizontal recovery is poor.
