Goop, also known as graffiti (though this more properly refers to a variety of goop that is painted on walls), gunk, or sludge, is a hazardous substance that first appears in Super Mario Sunshine. It is a thick, slimy, paint-like residue that can slick Mario's footing and deal damage to him, as well as causing other characters and structures to sink into it. It can be cleaned up and removed using water, most notably sprayed by F.L.U.D.D.

Graffiti, also known as goop, is a thick, slimy paint-like residue that Mario is forced to clean up with the help of F.L.U.D.D. in Super Mario Sunshine. There are many types of graffiti found within the game. Some are helpful, while most are detrimental and cause various adverse effects if they are touched by Mario. Many types of graffiti can sink Toads, Piantas, Nokis, trees, and even large structures completely underground. There are also a number of goop enemies encountered throughout the game, including Gatekeepers and Swoopin' Stus. Gatekeepers appear from piles of goop that have been sprayed with water, while Swoopin' Stus can be spawned at random from the goop, along with Common Graffiti, Electric Graffiti, and Lava Graffiti. In the game, Bowser Jr. (under the guise of Shadow Mario) creates most of the graffiti using his Magic Paintbrush.
Numerous varieties of goop have appeared, largely in Super Mario Sunshine:
*Burning goop, a fiery orange variant of ordinary goop that appears in Pianta Village
*Electric goop, a green-and-yellow variant of ordinary goop that appears on Sirena Beach
*Glorpedoes, rolling ball projectiles formed from goop that appear in Bianco Hills and Noki Bay
*Graffiti, a dried form of goop used by Bowser Jr. to tag walls in Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
*Hot water, slimy green goop that appears in the final boss battle against Bowser and Bowser Jr. in Corona Mountain
*Orange Juice Generators, pulsating masses of orange goop that can be destroyed only by a Yoshi's juice-spraying ability
*Rainbow Ms, an amorphous, multicolored form of goop that can be painted on walls. Mario and Shadow Mario can use it to travel to other areas of Isle Delfino. Similar goop also appears within the pipes to Sirena Beach and Pianta Village.
*Slimy water, damaging, goop-polluted water that appears in Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, and Noki Bay
*Splotchy goop, black goop that corrupts Bowser and pollutes the waters of Lake Lapcat in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Super Mario series
Super Mario Sunshine
Goop is a major hazard in Super Mario Sunshine. It is spread across Isle Delfino by Bowser Jr. in the guise of Shadow Mario using his magic brush. It is first encountered in the opening cutscene taking place on the Delfino Airstrip, where a pink, orange, yellow, and white color variant has been painted over the main airstrip, forcing the Toad Express to curve and skid to a halt as it lands. After dismounting the plane, the yellow Toad in Princess Peach's entourage notes that the goop is moving on its own. Mario subsequently obtains FLUDD on the airstrip and uses it to clean up the goop and defeat a Proto Piranha, a type of large, goop-based Piranha Plant dwelling in the middle of the goop, restoring the airstrip to its normal state. Mario is arrested by the Isle Delfino Police shortly afterward and accused by the Pianta prosecutor of painting the goop all over Isle Delfino. The Pianta judge then sentences him to clean up all of the island's goop and graffiti.

Goop appears in three different colors depending on the area and scenario in which it is encountered:
*Pink, yellow, orange, and white goop appears on the Delfino Airstrip during Delfino Airstrip Dilemma as well as in Episode 1 of Noki Bay (Uncork the Waterfall).
*Brown-and-white goop appears in Delfino Plaza's Polluted Piranha Battle and Shadow Mario Chase events, as well as Episodes 1, 2, 3, and 5 of Bianco Hills. Petey Piranha launches this color of goop from his mouth, and ordinary Piranha Plants require it in order to appear and attack Mario, as well as being covered in it. Piranhabons are similarly covered in it, and Plurps generate it in Bianco Hills.
*Black goop appears in Delfino Plaza's Boathouse Blues and Cleaning Lighthouse events, as well as Episodes 1–5 of Ricco Harbor and Episode 2 of Noki Bay (The Boss of Tricky Ruins). It is spat out by Gooper Blooper and ordinary Bloopers as a projectile, resembling ink in this way.
Additionally, there are also two special varieties of goop with unique properties: burning goop and electric goop.

The most common variant of graffiti is tar-like goop used to slicken the ground and cause Mario to lose traction. If Mario stands on goop for too long, he will sustain damage every few seconds (the amount of damage sustained depends on the type of goop). It also dirties and sticks to his clothes, which can be cleaned by Spin Jumping or swimming in clean water. This variety of Graffiti is found almost everywhere. Some enemies release it, while others are infused with it. It's found in many colors, and is easily confusable with Lava Graffiti and Electric Graffiti. Goop Generators are occasionally paired with this type of graffiti. According to a certain Pianta in Delfino Plaza who got stuck in it, it tastes "sweet," and likens it to "candy."
Ordinary goop is a tar-like substance that slickens the ground and causes Mario to lose traction. If Mario stands on goop for too long, he sustains damage every few seconds. It also dirties and sticks to his clothes, which can be cleaned by spin-jumping or swimming in clean water. Goop is found in several different colors depending on the area in which it is encountered. According to a certain Pianta in Delfino Plaza who is trapped in it during Mario's first visit, it tastes "sweet," and he likens it to "candy."

There are three different types:
*Graffiti that is pink, yellow, orange, and white, which appears in Delfino Airstrip and Noki Bay.
*Brown and white graffiti, which appears in Delfino Plaza and Bianco Hills. Petey Piranha launches this type of graffiti from his mouth.
*Black Graffiti, which appears in Delfino Plaza, Ricco Harbor, and Noki Bay when released by Bloopers and Gooper Blooper.

Rainbow M
A Rainbow M is a multicolored "M"-shaped logo used to transport Mario or Shadow Mario to other parts of Isle Delfino. There are three of them, all of which are found only in Delfino Plaza. The first was painted by Shadow Mario to escape Mario after he foiled the former's first attempt to kidnap Princess Peach in Delfino Plaza. This one was painted on the base of the Grand Pianta Statue, and leads to Bianco Hills. Two more Rainbow Ms can be found on the side of the Boathouse (leading to Ricco Harbor) and on the front of the Lighthouse (leading to Gelato Beach). These Rainbow Ms appear only after the Gatekeepers covering the buildings have been defeated. All Mario has to do is squirt water on a Rainbow M to activate it (after which it becomes a portal to its corresponding location) and then jump into it. The goop that comprises the Rainbow Ms is also found inside two red Warp Pipes: one on top of a building located behind the Grand Pianta Statue (where it is plugged up by a large Pineapple at the beginning of the game), and one on top of the Shine Gate. These Warp Pipes provide access to Sirena Beach and Pianta Village respectively. Pinna Park and Noki Bay are the only levels that are not accessed via Rainbow Ms. When Mario uses one of the three Rainbow Ms, he is fragmented into multiple particles before entering, after which he is reassembled again at the start of the level (similar to what happens when Luigi is transported through the Pixelator in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon).

Wall Graffiti
Wall Graffiti is the main type of graffiti that Shadow Mario uses throughout the game. As implied by the name, it is usually painted on walls, though it also appears on other flat surfaces. The Magic Paintbrush has a seemingly endless supply of it, and it can be used to create other types of goop. For example, Shadow Mario is seen painting Rainbow Ms with the Magic Paintbrush, which is tipped with graffiti. There is also a "raw" form which Shadow Mario uses to paint his infamous "M" signature, which also appears in the game's title screen at the very beginning, when the logos appear. Along with Shadow Mario's signature, there are also painted symbols that come in pairs. The symbols that appear are "△", "○", and "×". Wall Graffiti is most often colored red, though green Wall Graffiti appears in Ricco Harbor, and black Wall Graffiti was used to deface the Shine Statue, as well as the bells inside Delfino Plaza's two bell-towers. When Wall Graffiti is sprayed long enough, it will be completely cleaned off the wall. After it's cleaned off, a Blue Coin will be released for Mario to collect. In the case of paired symbols, when one symbol is cleaned off, the Blue Coin appears next to its matching symbol, and vice versa. If Mario doesn't collect the Blue Coin in time, it will disappear, and the graffiti he cleaned off will reappear. He must then backtrack and clean it off a second time to make the Blue Coin appear once again. Mario will earn a Shine Sprite for cleaning the graffiti off the Shine Statue and each of the two bells.

There is also ink goop on the wall near the crates where Gooper Blooper is fought for the first time in Ricco Harbor. It cannot be washed off, but it does not hurt Mario. The goop leaks out of the crates Gooper Blooper is in and runs down the wall and into the water, making it a type of Poisonous Water.
Goop regularly spawns Goobles, small enemies that seek out and attack Mario when he is nearby, spreading more goop in the process. This does not occur on the Delfino Airstrip.

Another type of Wall Graffiti appears during Episode 1 of Noki Bay. This graffiti is pink, yellow, orange, and white, and several blotches of it are positioned at intervals along a tall cliff face near the starting point of the level. These goop blotches are shaped like various things relating to the sea, including a squid, a sailboat, a dolphin, a whale, an octopus, and a bird. This graffiti can be cleaned off by Mario, but it cannot hurt him. As Mario cleans the blotches off, platforms of varying sizes appear out of the cliff face, which he can then use to climb upward. Cleaning off all of this Wall Graffiti helps Mario to reach the cork plugging the waterfall, where he has to defeat a Monty Mole in order to finish the episode.
Goop can trap many friendly characters, including Piantas, Nokis, and Toads (including Toadsworth), if they are standing on it, causing them to sink into it. They are freed after the goop around them is cleaned up and can subsequently be sprayed clean, causing them to celebrate and thank Mario if spoken to. Certain Piantas and Nokis may reward Mario with a coin, Blue Coin, or 1-Up Mushroom when spoken to after being rescued this way. Piantas that are dirty with goop but not trapped in it also appear in Bianco Hills and Pianta Village, and they reward Mario similarly if cleaned and spoken to. In particular, the Pianta mayor, who is covered in burning goop, rewards Mario with a Shine Sprite for doing this.

Forcefield
Terrain features and structures can sink into goop as well, including trees; rock formations in Noki Bay; a section of the Delfino Airstrip; Delfino Plaza's Grand Pianta Statue, boathouse, and lighthouse; the hill leading up to the Big Windmill in Bianco Hills; and Sirena Beach's Hotel Delfino. Trees and Noki Bay's rock formations sunk this way can be released by cleaning up the goop around them, and certain trees may be revealed this way by spraying patches of ground on Gelato Beach as well, which does not contain any goop. Other structures sunk this way can typically be released by defeating a Proto Piranha residing on top of the sunken structure, though in Hotel Delfino's case, Phantamanta must be defeated instead. In all cases, objects trapped in goop display a faint bubbling animation when released, with an earthquake occurring as they emerge.

Undulating orange-yellow Forcefields block access to items, prevent Warp Pipes from being entered, and damage Mario on contact. These Forcefields can only be dissolved by Juice spat from a Yoshi. Forcefields have a zigzag shape (also appearing to have an 'M') and undulate when Mario approaches them. There are only six Forcefields in the game.

Forcefield locations:
The colorful goop pictograms engulfing Noki Bay's rock formations in Uncork the Waterfall are the only ordinary goop in the game to be located on walls. Due to this, they have the unique properties of never spawning Goobles and not dealing damage to Mario on contact. Additionally, what appears to be black goop running down the edge of Ricco Harbor is actually part of the slimy water, and therefore cannot even be cleaned off by Mario.

Electric Graffiti
Most enemies and bosses in Super Mario Sunshine, as well as the game's Yoshis, appear to be at least partially composed of goop, as they dissolve into goop bubbles when attacked or defeated. This is most noticeable with enemies such as Strollin' Stus, which emerge out of a Generator-like mound of goop in Episode 1 of Bianco Hills (Road to the Big Windmill), but also occurs for enemies and bosses such as Cataquacks and King Boo. The Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia confirmed that the enemies and Yoshis in Super Mario Sunshine are created from Bowser Jr.'s graffiti.

<gallery>
Electric Graffiti, as its name states, is goop infused with electricity. Its color consists of a mixture of aquamarine and yellow, and it has electricity visibly surging from it. This type of graffiti is found only in Sirena Beach. When Mario touches this goop, it will damage and briefly stun him. Touching it will also cause Mario's colors to be inverted momentarily. Because of their thick soles, Piantas are unharmed by the goop, but can sink into it. Nokis are unharmed by the goop as well, though they will sink into it. In Episode 1 of Sirena Beach, Phantamanta covers a large portion of the beach in Electric Graffiti, causing Hotel Delfino to become stuck underground. After Mario defeats Phantamanta, the goop disappears and the hotel rises back out of the ground. The Electric Graffiti reappears in Episode 6, where it's shaped like a smiling Boo and covers most of the beach in front of Hotel Delfino. Mario has to clean all the goop off the beach within three minutes to earn a Shine Sprite.

Lava Graffiti
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
While regular goop does not appear in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, graffiti and a new variant called splotchy goop do.
Lava Graffiti is lava-like goop found only in Pianta Village. It is orange-red in color, and releases a small burst of flame every now and then. This type of goop burns Mario on contact and sends him flying upward, just like lava or fire. Thus, if Mario gets caught in the middle of a large quantity of this goop, he will likely lose a life or sustain heavy damage, as he will have nowhere else to go after flying upward and falling back downward again. In Episode 1, this goop is produced by feverish Chain Chomplets. The goop reappears in Episode 3, where it covers almost the entire level and Mario must save the Mayor from the fiery inferno. Coo Coos fly around and drop Lava Graffiti during this episode. The goop is also present in Episode 6, where Mario has to rescue ten Piantas that are stuck in small puddles of it. In Episode 7, Shadow Mario leaves a trail of Lava Graffiti behind him as he runs.

Poisonous Water
Mario Golf series
Poison (obstacle)

Poisonous Water is goop-polluted water that depletes one section of Mario's Health Meter about every two seconds that he is in it. It only affects him while he is on the surface of the water, and does not hurt him while under the water. Poisonous Water appears in four areas in the game: Episode 6 of Bianco Hills, Episodes 1-5 of Ricco Harbor, Episodes 1-4 of Noki Bay and the Lily Pad Ride secret in Delfino Plaza, though this Poisonous Water will make Mario lose a life instantly if he makes contact with it. The color and type of Poisonous Water varies with the level in which it is encountered. In Bianco Hills, brownish goop covers the surface of the lake around the Big Windmill, making it poisonous. Ricco Harbor's Poisonous Water comes from large quantities of black goop that cover the surface of clean water in several areas. Noki Bay's translucent purple Poisonous Water came about as a result of Eely-Mouth's gingivitis.
Goop appears in two games of the Mario Golf series. In Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Petey Piranha spits up brown-and-white goop when he gets a double bogey or worse. In Mario Golf: Advance Tour, goop appears on the Mushroom Course along with many Proto Piranhas. Landing the ball in goop counts as out of bounds.

Tub Slime
Mario Power Tennis
Brown-and-white goop appears as an obstacle on the Delfino Plaza Court in Mario Power Tennis. It can cause players to slip and slide around. The player must also clear away goop in a tic-tac-toe-like minigame called Tic-Tac-Glow. Additionally, Petey Piranha utilizes brown-and-white goop in his Power Shots, Sludge Racket and Piranha Swingback.
Tub Slime (referred to as "water" by Bowser) is poisonous goop that is green in color, has a gelatinous consistency, and is searing hot. It essentially has the same properties as Lava Graffiti, but unlike Lava Graffiti, it cannot be removed or washed away, and does not appear anywhere else in the game. Bowser and Bowser Jr. are found soaking in Tub Slime in a giant floating hot tub at the top of Corona Mountain. They both remain in this goop for the duration of the final battle. During the battle, Bowser sometimes Ground Pounds the hot tub to splash the Tub Slime on Mario and damage him. There appears to be an unlimited amount of Tub Slime in the hot tub; when Bowser tilts the tub, most of it falls out, but the supply is immediately replenished. After Mario Ground Pounds all five sections that branch off from the hot tub, the entire hot tub tips over, and all of the Tub Slime falls out of it into Corona Mountain. The large Shine Sprite that was trapped in the Tub Slime is also set free.

Glorpedoes
Super Smash Bros. series
Glorpedoes are lumpy balls of goop that are pink, yellow, orange, and white in color and appear primarily in Episode 1 of Noki Bay, although Petey Piranha fires similar projectiles before his first fight. They are shot by a Monty Mole from a Cannon positioned atop the large cork plugging up the waterfall. Mario will sustain damage if one runs into him. When Mario sprays them with water, they will grow in size. If sprayed long enough, they will explode, sometimes leaving behind a Water Bottle that Mario can collect to refill some of F.L.U.D.D.'s water. A Glorpedo will shrink back to its normal size if Mario doesn't continue spraying it. Glorpedoes will also explode if Mario jumps directly on top of them. After being fired from the Cannon, Glorpedoes roll along a set path all the way down the large cliff, trailing Common Graffiti behind them. They explode into Common Graffiti when they reach the end of their path.
Goop appears as part of Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings' Final Smash, Shadow Mario Paint, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This move involves the user transforming into Shadow Mario and using the magic brush to paint yellow-and-orange goop over the screen in an X shape, which can deal damage to opponents on contact and eventually explodes. The goop painted visually resembles Super Mario Sunshines regular goop and burning goop but in the shape of X Graffiti. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a noticeable difference is that Goop remains onscreen for a shorter period of time before exploding.

Other appearances
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
Goop appears in Mario Golf: Advance Tour on the Mushroom Tourney course along with many Gatekeepers.
In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, during the Airplane Guard sequence of the battle with Petey Piranha, he attacks Mario and Luigi by spitting balls of goop as he does in Super Mario Sunshine. Petey uses his arms to indicate which Mario Bro. he is attacking, then spits goop at him. The Mario Bros. must hang on to Paper Mario until the goop is gone. If they get hit by the goop, they take damage. Alternatively, if they land on it, they run on top of it and slip when it disappears, falling behind and causing Petey to tackle them.

Goop also appears in Mario Power Tennis as an obstacle on the Delfino Plaza Court. It can cause players to slip and slide around. The player must also clear away goop in a tic-tac-toe-like minigame called Tic-Tac-Glow.

“As you are no doubt aware, someone has been senselessly defacing fair Isle Delfino using some paint-like substance. The accused is charged with polluting our beautiful home and yes, endangering our very way of life. Indeed, how can one not be aware of what is going on? Though it is daytime in Delfino Plaza, our poor residents tremble beneath a veil of darkness. Expert Shine scholars have determined that this darkness has arisen because all of our guardians, the Shine Sprites, have vanished from their gathering spot at the Shine Gate. The reason? It's quite obvious. This horrible graffiti is to blame!”
Pianta prosecutor, Super Mario Sunshine

Goop, also known as graffiti (though this more properly refers to a variety of goop that is painted on walls), gunk,[1] or sludge,[2] is a hazardous substance that first appears in Super Mario Sunshine. It is a thick, slimy, paint-like residue that can slick Mario's footing and deal damage to him, as well as causing other characters and structures to sink into it. It can be cleaned up and removed using water, most notably sprayed by F.L.U.D.D.

Numerous varieties of goop have appeared, largely in Super Mario Sunshine:

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

 • Pink, yellow, orange, and white goop appears on the Delfino Airstrip during Delfino Airstrip Dilemma as well as in Episode 1 of Noki Bay (Uncork the Waterfall).
 • Brown-and-white goop appears in Delfino Plaza's Polluted Piranha Battle and Shadow Mario Chase events, as well as Episodes 1, 2, 3, and 5 of Bianco Hills. Petey Piranha launches this color of goop from his mouth, and ordinary Piranha Plants require it in order to appear and attack Mario, as well as being covered in it. Piranhabons are similarly covered in it, and Plurps generate it in Bianco Hills.
 • Black goop appears in Delfino Plaza's Boathouse Blues and Cleaning Lighthouse events, as well as Episodes 1–5 of Ricco Harbor and Episode 2 of Noki Bay (The Boss of Tricky Ruins). It is spat out by Gooper Blooper and ordinary Bloopers as a projectile, resembling ink in this way.

Additionally, there are also two special varieties of goop with unique properties: burning goop and electric goop.

Goop regularly spawns Goobles, small enemies that seek out and attack Mario when he is nearby, spreading more goop in the process. This does not occur on the Delfino Airstrip.

Encyclopedia confirmed that the enemies and Yoshis in Super Mario Sunshine are created from Bowser Jr.'s graffiti.[3]

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

While regular goop does not appear in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, graffiti and a new variant called splotchy goop do.

Mario Power Tennis[edit]

Brown-and-white goop appears as an obstacle on the Delfino Plaza Court in Mario Power Tennis. It can cause players to slip and slide around. The player must also clear away goop in a tic-tac-toe-like minigame called Tic-Tac-Glow. Additionally, Petey Piranha utilizes brown-and-white goop in his Power Shots, Sludge Racket and Piranha Swingback.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

The goop painted visually resembles Super Mario Sunshine's regular goop and burning goop but in the shape of X Graffiti. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a noticeable difference is that Goop remains onscreen for a shorter period of time before exploding.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, during the Airplane Guard sequence of the battle with Petey Piranha, he attacks Mario and Luigi by spitting balls of goop as he does in Super Mario Sunshine. Petey uses his arms to indicate which Mario Bro. he is attacking, then spits goop at him. The Mario Bros. must hang on to Paper Mario until the goop is gone. If they get hit by the goop, they take damage. Alternatively, if they land on it, they run on top of it and slip when it disappears, falling behind and causing Petey to tackle them.

WarioWare Gold[edit]

Brown-and-white goop has to be cleaned off a building in the Super Mario Sunshine microgame in WarioWare Gold.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

Dr. Petey Piranha uses goop to destroy viruses during his special skill animation in Dr. Mario World.
