The Unlucky Space is a space that first appears in Mario Party 9. When a player lands on it, they will be penalized with a negative event.

In Mario Party 9, unlike Lucky Spaces which rewards the Captain for landing on it, Unlucky Spaces serve as their negative counterpart, penalizing any Captain unfortunate enough to land on one. Typically located next to a red Warp Pipe, an Unlucky Space will make a Piranha Plant appear and will force the Captain to travel down the Red Pipe into a cavern with six Mini Ztar Spaces. The Captain must then roll a standard Dice Block and move accordingly; higher numbers lead to spaces with a greater loss of Mini Stars. Only one Unlucky Space appears in Mario Party: Island Tour, right in the path of a sleeping Chain Chomp in Perilous Palace Path. If a player lands on this space, the Chain Chomp will wake up and chase all of the players in its path at most six spaces backward.

Mario Party 10[edit]

Unlucky Spaces reappear in Mario Party 10. If the player lands on one, they will usually lose Mini Stars, though something else bad may happen, such as in Whimsical Waters where a Blooper may ink a player, preventing them from using Special Dice Blocks on the next turn.

Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]

This section is referring to a subject in an upcoming or recently released game. When the game is released, or more information about this subject is found, this section may need major rewriting.

Unlucky Spaces return in Super Mario Party Jamboree, where they act as the negative counterpart to Lucky Spaces. A roulette starts and the player must stop it, similar to the Lucky Spaces. They appear as red spaces with an image of a purple four-leaf clover. The events are as follows:[1]

  • Max out on Loadstones
  • Lose (3/5/7) coins
  • Give one item to the last place player
  • Give (3/5) coins to the last place player: If the player is in last place, they will be forced to give their coins to 3rd place instead.

Additionally, if the player lands on any Unlucky Space for the first time, they will receive the "Tomorrow Is Another Day" achievement.

If Pro Rules are on, players that land on this space must give 7 coins to the last place player.[2] If the player is in last place, they will be forced to give their coins to 3rd place instead.
