Each stat can be upgraded to a total of ten points each, meaning that all forty Golden Feathers must be found to reach the max stats of Expresso.
Although not many stats need to be upgraded for the early races, the later races will require that almost every Golden Feather in the game be found if Expresso is to have a fighting chance.

Golden feathers, otherwise known as feathers, are items in the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. One golden feather appears in each level. At Cranky's Hut, when Cranky introduces Expresso and its racing mini-game, Expresso's Racing, he tells Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong to find least four golden feathers for Expresso to join the first race, "Ship Deck Dash," and gives them one golden feather to start with. Once at least four golden feathers are applied to Expresso, the player can play the first race of Expresso's Racing, "Ship Deck Dash". A total of forty golden feathers appear, each adding a point to one of Expresso's stats: Strength, Speed, Flight, or Boost; each stat has ten slots, meaning that applying all forty golden feathers to Expresso maxes his stats entirely.
