Quartet-cannons, in World 1-Airship
A quartet-cannon on the ceiling in Super Mario Bros. 3 (both NES and All-Stars)

Quartet-cannons[1] (or cannon quartets)[2] are quadruple-barreled cannons that fire cannonballs in multiple directions at once, then rotate clockwise at a 45° angle before firing again. They are usually found hanging from a fixture on the ceiling.

In Super Mario Bros. 3, quartet-cannons appear in World 1-Airship and World 5-Airship. In Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3's World-e, they also appear in Armored Airship, Koopaling Confusion, and Bowser's Airship 1. In this game, they cannot be interacted with, and only two opposite barrels out of the four are active.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, quartet-cannons appear in World 8-Airship. In addition to hanging overhead, some are now found grounded on the floor. Consequently, their behavior has been tweaked; they are now solid objects, and they fire two diagonal cannonballs at a time when ordinal and three straight cannonballs when cardinal. One of the grounded quartet-cannons is a giant rotating cannon pipe[3] that fires giant cannonballs out of three cannons, with one cannon actually being a pipe that does not fire and that player characters must enter.
