Avalanches[citation needed] appear as obstacles in snowy settings of Super Mario and Donkey Kong games.
History in the Super Mario franchise
Mario Party 4
In Mario Party 4, an avalanche is what the player characters have to outrun in the Avalanche! minigame.
Donkey Kong franchise
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat / New Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
An avalanche occurs in Silver Snow Peak from Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. As Donkey Kong and Hoofer are running down the mountain, it approaches the characters at a fast pace behind them. If they come into contact with the avalanche, they take damage. In the New Play Control! version of the game, a giant snowball must be removed to escape the avalanche.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and its Nintendo Switch version, the stage Cliffside Slide is set during an avalanche in Donkey Kong Island's Cliff area. It takes up the bottom side of the stage during ascent segments, carrying platforms and hazards, the former of which may start sinking into the avalanche when stepped on. The Kongs lose a life if they fall into the avalanche.
