Avalanches in the Super Mario franchise are rapidly declining heaps of snow that endanger the player characters.
History in the Super Mario franchise
Mario Party 4
An avalanche in Mario Party 4 is what the player characters have to outrun in the Avalanche! minigame.
Donkey Kong franchise
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat / New Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
An avalanche[citation needed] in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and its New Play Control! port approaches Donkey Kong and Hoofer from behind as they go down the mountain in Silver Snow Peak, and the avalanche damages them on contact. In the New Play Control! version, a giant snowball must be removed to escape the avalanche.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
The avalanche[citation needed] obstacle returns in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and its enhanced Nintendo Switch port of the same name. It first and only appears in the Donkey Kong Island level Cliffside Slide. However, unlike in the iterations of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, touching the avalanche will cause Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and Cranky Kong (as well as Funky Kong in the Nintendo Switch port) to lose a life, making it a replacement for pits in various levels and lava in both Meltdown Mayhem and Volcano Dome.
