The corner cases[edit]

Hi! If you're read this list, you probably have some questions like, "Why is THAT on the list?" Fear not, I have compiled a list of corner cases to explain the oddball inclusions and cascades from the oddball inclusions.

  • One of Whirling Fortress’s custom moves is Flying Fortress, so no matter what rule you say to avoid it Flying Fortress would get in anyway. It being included also brings in Spinning Kong, which is just Whirling Fortress but with nearly no height gain, and besides its a propeller.
  • After jumping out, Cappy can jump. After jumping, he falls. Therefore, he is only selectively affected by gravity, meaning he is flying in other cases.
  • Spin Jump (the Super Mario one) being flying is extremely trollish but how the heck are you going to explain it’s these Spin Jumps but not those Spin Jumps when Super Mario 3D World implements a weak version of the slow fall without an object? The ones that don’t really have a high ascent make it in by proxy.
  • I would very much not want Launch Stars to be flying, because them being included creates an entire other category and lets things like Super Mario Run's Bubbles slip in. Like, Warp Stars in Kirby are cutscenes, not flying. Alas, Launch Star is on the Fly page so I’m stuck. (This is also why there’s a “no launches” clause, because if these are flying then Clear Pipe Cannons using the same mechanics are flying, and then every cannon ever is flying. This is the easiest way to stop that.)
  • Green Missile is described as flying, meaning there has to be an exception to the exception to allow Green Missile but not all launches. And once the “Green Missile” clause was added F.L.U.D.D’s Rocket Nozzle couldn’t be left out because F.L.U.D.D is technically a character and an item, which still means they're a character. Lunar Launch sneaks in too, as extremely high jump or no it's literally named "launch".
  • Peach Parasol is clearly an air jump and not flight, but the float at the end makes it want to be in the same group as Piranhacopter ("high ascent and slow descent") That's the archtypical flying group. At that point, who am I to tell Peach Parasol to go home?
  • Yes, giving Rocket Barrel two rows is weird. There's a entire sentence leading the notes column in both rows to smooth it over. My own rules kind of trap me on that one, they're clearly two different mechanical implementations in the same game
  • Pidget's carpets & Lakitu's Cloud and Floating Jump & Tail Mario (Smash Bros.) could be merged. I feel like the answer is no because I never played Super Mario Bros. 2 and I have a hunch there might be something different between carpets and clouds, and besides they look nothing like each other. Similarly, The Floating Jump and Tail Mario look so different a merge would be weird. Yes, I then realize letting Wing Mario and Winged Yoshi share a row appears inconsistent, but those use the same item and involve wings.
  • Yoshi Kid is just like Parakarry to my knowledge, but if I let one Flutter Jump through the list will be flooded by midair jumps so just ignore that please.
  • Yes, the jetpack from Wario's Adventure is here. I said "microgames usually don't count", but that's the exception that demonstrates the rule as that microgame has grounded and aerial segments. Theoretically, this list is supposed to account for minigame controls too.Salmancer (talk) 09:13, February 16, 2025 (EST)

Oh and Power Squirrel is on the list purely on vibes. Like, infinite double jumps where you can gain altitude is just flying with extra steps. (While Flutter Jumps are infinite in Yoshi games, they have a very specific set of rules saying they cannot gain infinite height.) Salmancer (talk) 10:34, February 16, 2025 (EST)

Possible eleventh category[edit]

Other category but I feel like I'm losing the script with this.

  • "Hover along ground" this power does not allow Mario to move through the air at all. Instead, he floats just above the ground and follows the contours of it. The usual distinction made is that a power of this kind allows Mario to ignore hazards on the ground like Spike Traps, or move across otherwise harmful terrain like lava.

This would cover Spike Guard, the remaining Special Dashes (Carousel Dash and Luma Dash), and maybe Lakilester. Mario Kart Bullet Bill and Cappy would not count because of the lack of a comparative non-flight state. Salmancer (talk) 10:04, February 18, 2025 (EST)

So what's all this then?[edit]

what's the reason for creating this list? i'm curious — Super Leaf stamp from Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.eviemaybe (talk / contributions) 16:15, February 21, 2025 (EST)

I don't like Fly (Talk page section:Talk:Fly#Downgrade to list?), because it inherently has to re-describe the primary functions of a number of forms. This is bad, because well if I want to know how Cape Mario or Winged Yoshi flies I should be able to go to Cape Mario's or Winged Yoshi's page, not have to click over to another page. Also I don't want to have to maintain details on both Fly and the page for each form. (Also because Fly as a verb feels like some Flying adjacent things shouldn't be on Fly, like Winged Yoshi's slow fall post flying in Woolly World.)
A future proposal which is about generally merging moves to the the form or item that lets players use a move includes deleting Fly in favor of this list, which keeps Fly's current ability to compare and contrast all the flight in the franchise without needing to re-write prose for moves and forms and items on Fly.
