Shroom 2021 Roserade.png

Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome into our February Fun Stuff offices, where I've been doing some light decorating for the season of love. It's pretty easy to get some roses pulled together when you yourself are a Roserade! Don't ask me about the moral logistics of this.

As we move through winter's last leg and into the soon-to-be spring months, I hope the year has been treating you well. Things that certainly been strange in my world, both personally and politically, but one of the best things we can do is persevere, right? Each day is a new day, and we can work through those days together.

Fun Stuff is mostly the sections you know and love this month, besides a Hint Art we will miss dearly. Alongside the standard offerings, however, our new Sub-Director Sparks (talk) has taken it upon himself to bring back another edition of 'Shroom Quiz! Make sure to check it out, and test your knowledge on Issue 214!

But hey, if you've got an idea for a game, a niche in the puzzle world that you don't see represented in the current team, why not check out our sign-up page and send an application in? We'd love to bring your idea to life! If you need any support along the way, feel free to reach out - I'd be happy to don my game design hat for the afternoon.

That's all from me, so go forth, enjoy your February, and most of all, have fun!

Anagrams

Written by: BBQ Turtle (talk)

Hello all, welcome to the February edition of Anagrams! Now as for the theme for this month- well it's time for the usual scrabbling around to try to come up with something vaguely-thematically-related to the time of the year, so let's see... February, Valentine's Day, couples... Crossovers! OK, apparently that's what we're going with- Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam it is (Also I really love that game title- hey look another connection!)! If you would like to avoid future tangents and tangentially-related future themes, or bad wordplay, please give me suggestions for themes or anagrams I could use on my talk page or in a PM to me on the forums, and I would love to hear it (I didn't say I would cut it out yet!)! OK, it's Valen-time to get coupling these anagrams up with their answers.

How it works...
Basically, this puzzle consists of solving the anagrams. Each month has a specific theme, which will give you a clue about what sort of words or phrases the anagrams will be. I've also included the boxes that the anagrams will fit into, so you'll be able to tell how many words it will solve to be and how many letters will be in each word, which should give you a hand too. You'll also notice that within each set of boxes, one of the squares are yellow. As you solve each anagram, note down the letter which appears in the yellow squares, and if you can solve all of the anagrams, you'll also get a bonus anagram to solve from completing all of the others. I've included the letter configuration for this one at the bottom too, just to give you an extra helping hand. Best of luck!

Hiding Koopa

Written by: Waluigi Time (talk)

Welcome back to Hiding Koopa! After an extended stay on Donkey Kong Island, the Koopas all went to go hang out in Termina in this artwork from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D. Honestly, I just picked this because I thought the artwork was cool, but then I discovered it's been 10 years since it was released and 25 years since the original Majora's Mask. Hooray for serendipity! Can you find all five Koopas before you have to play the Song of Time?

Connections

Written by: Roserade (talk)

Greetings, beautiful 'Shroom readers! Welcome back to another edition of Connections! I meant to put one term in my Valentine's cards this year, but now I can't figure out which envelope they each fit in... Can you save me from my romantic disaster?

How it works:
Below is a table of sixteen different words, all of them with some sort of connection to the Mario series. These words correlate in sets of four, and it's up to you to figure out which words belong to a set! Work through the grid and decide which words are connected. Once you think you have the answer, check against the provided answers. If you get stuck along the way, feel free to utilize the clues. There's only one correct answer, so be on the lookout for words that feel like they might fit in more than one category. Good luck!

Vanilla Valley Throwback Magikoopa
Raspberry Donut Generator Towering
Birdo Snowflake Garage Melty
Battle Dodo Clockwork Forest
Clue 1

Start with "Dodo"

Clue 2

Clues as stiff as a board!

Clue 3

If you get these clue-free, you're out of this world!

Answer
  1. Dodo, Magikoopa, Raspberry, Birdo: bosses in N64 Super Mario RPG
  2. Towering, Snowflake, Garage, Clockwork: words found in Mario Party 6 board names
  3. Throwback, Generator, Melty, Battle: words found in Galaxy names from Super Mario Galaxy 2's World 6
  4. Vanilla, Valley, Donut, Forest: ___ Ghost House

How did you do? Did you figure out the connections? Thanks for playing!

Where in the Marioverse is Carmen Sandiego?

Written by: FunkyK38 (talk)

HOW TO PLAY

Each issue, you will be given a case to solve and clues to use to help you find the solution! Use your Mario knowledge to crack the case!

You will begin each case at the scene of the crime, and you will be given three clues from passerby as to where the next hot spot is and what game it’s from. Using your knowledge of Mario games and the Super Mario Wiki, figure out where the crook is and go track them down! There are four locations each round: the crime scene (1) at the start, two locations (2 and 3) with clues, and the hideout for the crook of the month (4). Answers for locations will be given with the corresponding round, for example, the clues from the crime scene will lead you to location 2, and once you open the spoiler bubbles for location 2, you will be given the correct answer. You can open the clues for each location in any order you’d like, but be careful! You may encounter an incorrect clue that could throw you off the case!

Clues offered will give you a hint either about the next location or the game it’s in. Unlike a regular Carmen Sandiego game, you do not have to collect information about the crook you are tracking down.

Challenge round (optional):

-Find all locations and games correctly in two minutes or less

-Find all locations and games correctly without using the rest of the Wiki for help

A jewelry heist feels too predictable for Carmen...

“We’ve got a case of old-fashioned jewelry theft this time, gumshoe, but it seems certain Carmen is behind it! Princesses Peach and Daisy have reported that all of their crowns have been stolen from their castles, from their vaults and jewelry boxes, even from right off their heads! They are usually sporting their signature crowns in all of their appearances minus some of the sports games where they substitute a crown with a visor or a helmet, and in fact their crowns are even a symbol used in Mario Kart for their princess power. But now, both of them have reported that their crowns have been nicked right off of their heads, and for that, we are looking at agents that are high-up in Carmen’s organization. Will they try to sell these crowns? Or will they keep them as trinkets for Carmen’s personal collection? NEITHER! You’re going to foil this brazen heist and track down that crook before Carmen can even lay eyes on this quarry! It’s time to get down to sleuthing, gumshoe!”

CASE CLOSED

HIDEOUT ANSWER: Kathmandu from Mario is Missing! Kathmandu in Mario is Missing!

This case is a crowning moment for you!

“A successful investigation, gumshoe! When you cracked the case, we raced to Kathmandu, where, coincidentally, Luigi had just bumped into our crown thieves, knocking them over and sending a few crowns skittering across the path. ACME agents moved in and nabbed both of them. They're waiting at HQ for questioning, but I doubt they will spill the beans on Carmen's plans. We were able to recover all of the stolen crowns and return them to Princess Peach and Princess Daisy, and they've sent a generous reward to you, which we have deposited straight into your account. Now, we have an additional job for you to do before you return to HQ to start your case write-up: we need you to help Luigi find the missing statue and move on to his next location. We can't eave Mario missing, after all! Time to hop to it, gumshoe, that statue isn't going to find itself!”

Trivia

Written by: Shoey (talk)

I'm no longer director. I'm still in charge of Trivia. Did you know?

  1. That World 6-5 is the only level in Super Mario Bros. 3 outside of World-8 with a 400-second time limit?
  2. That in Super Mario World, Cookie Mountain is the only level outside of the Special World to feature Jumping Fire Piranha Plants?
  3. That Spindrift was originally supposed to appear in New Super Mario Bros.?
  4. That it's implied in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars that Smithy suffers from high blood pressure?
  5. That in the original The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, the Circus Leader's Mask is functionally useless? Its sole purpose, outside of giving the mask to the Moon Children, is preventing the Gorman Brothers from breaking Cremia's milk bottles. But that side quest must be completed before the player can collect the Circus Leader's Mask, making the Circus Leader's Mask pointless.
  6. That Koopa Paratroopa and Buzzy Beetle are the only enemies from Super Mario Bros. who haven't appeared in a mainline 3D Mario game?
  7. That Yoshi's Touch & Go is the only Yoshi game where Baby Mario speaks in more than cries?

Answer: Boom Boom

How'd you do everyone? Hooded Pitohui had this next part written well so I've decided to keep it because it's pretty accurate:

"If you were able to get 10-12 correct, consider yourself an Ultra 'Shroom-er! If you got 7-9 correct, you're a Super 'Shroom-er! You can call yourself a 'Shroom-er if you were able to get 4-6 correct, but you might want to refresh yourself if you were a Dry 'Shroom-er who only managed to get 0-3. Oh, and if you managed to get them all without having to use any of the second hints and without looking back at the issue, well consider yourself a Pal of Poochy!

However you did, I hope you enjoyed reminiscing on last month's issue! Now go check out the rest of this month's!"

- Hooded Pitohui from Issue 205 (which also applies for this one)

Yeah! What he said! I really hope you had a blast too! Thanks for playing!
