This is a list of glitches in Luigi's Mansion. Unless otherwise noted, all names are conjectural.

Glitches

Bouncing ball glitch

This glitch may be performed in the Nursery if the player picks up the ball with R Button, faces a wall, then presses and holds L Button. The ball begins bouncing off the wall and back into the grasp of the Poltergust 3000 repeatedly.

Hanging Luigi

This is a lighting glitch in which Luigi's shadow appears to be floating whenever lightning strikes. This glitch has been mistakenly thought to be an Easter egg apparently showing Luigi having hung himself. However, this has been debunked by that fact that it appears multiple times throughout the game in awkward and random places. It is merely caused by abnormal camera angles in select situations. It can sometimes be seen when talking with certain Toads, as well as when speaking with Professor E. Gadd over the Game Boy Horror in any room lightning can be seen, such as in the Telephone Room while speaking on one of the telephones.

Invisible Bowling Ghost

This glitch randomly occurs, and causes a Bowling Ghost to become invisible. The bowling ball it carries begins floating above a pulsating ring that all ghosts have underneath them, appearing to have no collision detection when this occurs.[1]

Invisible door

When the player exits The Twins' Room and presses A Button, Luigi performs the animation used for opening doors.

Map clipping

When the player makes Luigi face a door, Luigi's nose and part of his cap clip through the door when the map is viewed on the Game Boy Horror.

Out-of-bounds glitch

This rather extensive glitch occurs when the player rushes to the chest containing the Area 2 Key after defeating Chauncey before it finishes spawning. This allows Luigi to walk on the ceiling.[2]

This glitch is commonly utilized by speedrunners as a very quick method of completing the game as it allows Luigi to reach King Boo very early into the game.

The player must begin this by having side-step mode enabled from the starting point. After moving to the right, Luigi runs into an invisible wall. Here, the player must press A Button for Luigi to walk and eventually open a door. Here, the player must turn his flashlight to prevent a Purple Bomber or Ceiling Surprise from interrupting. Once the bats notice and head for Luigi, the player must press down-right on C Stick just before he is hit. As Luigi reacts, the button must be released, causing Luigi to stand at a sideways angle.

Following this, the player must hold right on both Control Stick and C Stick. If the angle Luigi is at is sharp enough, he goes around a ledge. If this does not work, Luigi can simply enter and exit a door to respawn the bats. Luigi must then go down the hallway to the rooms such as the Conservatory while walking sideways to prevent ghosts from spooking him. The player must then head left and vacuum bats over to the rightmost area and release R Button while quickly tapping left on Control Stick and briefly holding right on C Stick. If this is done correctly, Luigi switches to a diagonal angle again. The player must then switch to standard mode and have Luigi face directly toward them. The player must then re-enter side-step mode and hold up on both Control Stick and C Stick. The player must then pause, swtich to standard mode once again, and hold up-right on Control Stick and press A Button to continue, all while pressing X Button to open the Game Boy Horror.

If all of this is done right, Luigi should fall into the wall of the hall to the Secret Altar, where he is then able to enter the altar to battle King Boo very early. This glitch can be very difficult to perform, as it is very long and may be very easily interrupted. It is therefore recommended the player save with Toad before attempting this, as they only have one attempt. Several other problems, such as accidentally entering the Laundry Room instead, being startled by a ghost, and activating the cutscene in which King Boo blows Luigi away may occur.[3]

Pushing Toad glitch

This glitch only works with the Toad on the Balcony (2F) and the Washroom (1F). Luigi is able to push Toad around and once he does, if the player saves, Luigi is teleported back to the Foyer.[4]

Shadow Bogmire glitch

This glitch occurs when Luigi faces a wall just as a Shadow Bogmire is about to sucked in. The Shadow Bogmire becomes stuck on the nozzle of the Poltergust 3000. The outline of the ball that was supposed to be the Shadow Bogmire becomes stuck on the wall Luigi was facing. To end this glitch, the player must have Luigi take damage, hit a wall, or release R Button.[5]

Well glitch

When Luigi rushes toward the well in the Courtyard and a Ceiling Surprise scares him, he may occasionally fall through the ground and land in an out of bounds area next to the well, where he is unable to escape.[6]
