Fishing is a game mechanic in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. It is unlocked after connecting Lottacoin Island, which prompts a Concordian fisherman to give Mario and Luigi a fishing rod and allow them to purchase baits from his fishing buddy.

This mechanic is mainly used to obtain various fishes, which can be either sold for a good price, or used as materials for workshop requests. Additionally, certain quests begin after fishing up message in bottles.

Gameplay

Fishing

In order to fish, the player must watch the window showing the bobber closely. Once a fish or an item is hooked, the surrounding water will ripple violently, and a speech bubble with exclamation mark will pop up (with the amount of exclamation marks alluding to the hooked item's rarity), at which point, depending on which of the brothers is fishing, the player must press A Button or B Button as quickly as possible to reel it in. If too much time has passed, the fish escapes along with the bait used.

Baits

Baits are necessary items used for fishing, bought from the blue Concordian fisherman next to the fishing spot. There are three kinds of baits, and each has their own effects.

  • Standard bait, costing 20 coins each, does not affect the drop rate in any way.
  • Handcrafted bait, cost 30 coins each, makes it more likely to obtain fish needed for workshop requests.
  • Rarest bait, costing 50 coins each, boasts a better chance to obtain fish with high sell prices.
