Hammer Suit

The Hammer Suit[1][2] (alternatively Hammer Bros. Suit,[3][4] Hammer Brothers Suit,[5] or Hammer Brother Suit[6]) is an item found in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its SNES and Game Boy Advance remakes. This item transforms Mario or Luigi into Hammer Mario or Hammer Luigi, which gives them the ability to throw hammers. Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 adds a new utility to this suit: its hammers can break Gray Brick Blocks.

History

Super Mario Bros. 3

Mario in the Hammer Suit

Hammers thrown by Hammer Mario or Hammer Luigi can defeat almost everything, including Bowser, but as with other power-ups, one hit from an enemy causes them to lose their power. The characters also gain a fireball-proof shell when ducking, but lose their ability to slide down hills. If Mario or Luigi ducks while in the Hammer Suit, they resemble a Buzzy Beetle.

In the original Super Mario Bros. 3, retrieving a Hammer Suit will make Mario and Luigi's skin turn a darker, yellowish tone, while no other power-ups in the game do so. It is unknown what purpose this skin color change has, but it is possible that Nintendo placed the odd effect in to make the textures of Mario and Luigi's skin bear more resemblance to that of the Koopa Troopas and Hammer Brothers themselves. On the map screen and in remakes, Mario and Luigi's skin colors stay the same when they wear the suit.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

Mario and Luigi disguised as Sledge Brothers

In The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "Reptiles in the Rose Garden", Mario and Luigi wear Sledge Brother disguises that resemble Hammer Suits to sneak aboard and hijack King Koopa's Doom Ship so they can use the Levitation Beam to warp the White House back to its rightful place in Washington, D.C. and bring Kootie Pie back home before she can take over America, and before Koopa can use the beam to attack other countries as well. They attempt to use them to trick a group of Sledge Brothers into thinking they are one of them, but the disguises fail.

Trivia

  • The Hammer Suit (as well as Hammer Mario) is not mentioned in the original NES or All-Stars versions' instruction booklets. The Virtual Console re-release's Operations Guide, which is based on them, also has no reference to it. In the original game, it is something of a "secret" powerup, as it only shows up in hidden areas and randomly from Toad Houses, though in later versions, it is made to consistently appear in certain Toad Houses.
