Hammer Bros. (or Hammer Brothers for short) are Koopas that stand upright and throw hammers at passer-bys. They have been around since Super Mario Bros.. They also have bigger beaks than normal Koopas and wear armor. They can use special hammers to shrink enemies.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Interestingly a Hammer Bro. may have once been planned to be the host of a scrapped mini-game in Super Mario Bros. 3.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Hammer Bros. were made completely different. Like their predecessors, these Hammer Bros. had yellow skin. However, instead of green shells with green armor, SMRPG Hammer Bros. had black shells with black armor. They are also significantly larger than a normal Hammer Bro. (but presumably not larger than a Sledge Bro.). Additionally, these Hammer Bros. speak fondly of their hammers, as if their wooden weapons were sentient, living beings. (Interestingly enough, Smithy’s minions are, in fact, sentient, living weapons.) There are only two Hammer Bros. in the game (excluding Dr. Topper).
During the events of Super Mario RPG, the Hammer Bros. were the leaders of the Koopa Troop’s forces in Mushroom Way. They were ordered to capture any intruders, which they did when the fungus Toad tried to pass through Mushroom Way to the Mushroom Kingdom. However, Mario showed up to rescue his friend. As a result, a battle erupted between the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom and the two Hammer Bros. During the battle, the Hammer Bros. pounded Mario with their hammers, and even threw multiple hammers at the plumber. When Mario defeated one of the brothers, the remaining brother used the move Valor Up to increase his defense. However, even though his defense was boosted, the second Hammer Bro. was defeated by Mario. After the fight, Toad was freed, Mario earned a Flower Jar, and the hero even picked up his defeated enemy’s Hammer to use in battle.
Playable Appearances
One Hammer Brother appeared in Mario Superstar Baseball on the Bowser Monsters team and as a secret character. Several of them also appeared as teammates in Super Mario Strikers.
Hammer Brothers will appear playable in Mario Party 8. It is unknown if this means no more Hammer Bro. Orb.
It is rumored that Hammer Bro. will appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Variations
Amazin' Flying Hammer Bros. - Hammer Bros. perched atop a flying platform, tossing hammers around. When defeated, their platform remains. Their most recent appearance was in Super Princess Peach.
Army Bros. (Army Hammer Bro) - The elite forces of the Hammer Brother family as seen in Super Princess Peach.
Boomerang Bros. - Basically, a Hammer Brother that throws boomerangs instead of hammers. Their uniforms are white instead of black.
Chomp Bros. - As the name implies, these bulky baddies throw Chain Chomps instead of hammers. They are only found in Beanbean Kingdom.
Fire Bros. - Instead of hammers, these fellows spit fireballs. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a Fire Bro.'s fireball can cause an opponent to catch fire. Their uniforms are red.
Sledge Bros. - Monstrously sized Hammer Bros. that can cause small, localized earthquakes when they stomp. They are found in Giant Land and reappear in New Super Mario Bros. in World 8.
