- “Awww yeah! You 'bout to pull out the mad skills, boyeeeee?”
- —Skillit, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
The Mad Skillathon is a talent show event held in Wakeport in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, more specifically south of the main part of the area. Skillit is the host. Much like the Cholesteroad in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and the Attackathon in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, it consists of a series of endurance minigames involving Bros. Attacks. Its name is a pun on "marathon" and "skill."
Usually, the player fights against robotic monsters, greatly resembling the ones seen in the Attacks menu's demos except with arms and legs that make them resemble crabs. The red ones are on the ground and resemble crabs. They also come in a larger variation, which has to be damaged multiple times to defeat it. Blue monsters that fly appear exclusively during the Slingsniper game. Damaging and defeating monsters allows the player to obtain points, with the minigame concluding automatically upon reaching 999 points. (Star Rocket is an exception where points are earned for collecting stars instead of defeating monsters.)
There are three ranks the player can achieve, and like in the Cholesteroad, the player can earn prizes for achieving each rank: B rank (200 points) which awards the player 100 coins, A rank (500 points) which awards the player 300 coins, and S rank (800 points) which awards the player with an exclusive piece of gear. When S rank is obtained for all attacks, the player is awarded with the Pro Wear.
List of attacks
Bros. Attack | Challenge Description | S-Rank Prize | Changes From the Original Bros. Attack | Scoring |
---|---|---|---|---|
3D Green Shell | Kick the shell as many times as you can! Drop the boss for 20 points! | Rally Belt | The pass is omitted. Mario also starts some chains. | +3 per successful kick +20 for destroying the large target |
Fire Flower | A big flame is worth 3 points! Small flames will net you nothing! | Flame Hammer | The number of Fireballs that have to be thrown is determined randomly, and the attack immediately ends if the player messes up thrice. | +3 per big fireball |
Bye-Bye Cannon | Jump on monsters to increase your score with each bounce! 1->2->3! | Strike Gloves | The amount of Bros. fired is lowered to 3 at first and rises 1 by 1 every few rounds. For even numbers of Bros., both Bros. receive identical amounts of clones, while for odd numbers, whoever gets the bigger half is determined randomly. | +1 for each successive stomp (Botched stomps do not count.) |
Dropchopper | Grab timers to increase the time. Then drop on monsters' heads! | Action Boots | The Dropchopper is powered by a battery powered with + Clock-esque clocks. The grabbing phase is therefore replaced by a timer-grabbing section in each round, the Dropchopper's altitude is locked, and no shockwave is emitted from each stomp. Mario and Luigi also immediately return to the Dropchopper upon hitting a monster, though if they hit the ground, they take longer. There are also balloon-like mines that have to be avoided in between monster waves and stun the player on a hit. | +1 for each stomp performed successfully in the chain. (Botched stomps do not count and will break the chain; successful stomps performed afterward are a different chain. The timer waves also break the chains.) |
Bomb Derby | Smack the bombs into the monsters! Watch for different kinds of bombs. | Bare Boots DX | Some bombs exhibit weird behavior, like taking different amounts of time to reach Mario (telegraphed by their design incorporating a clock picture or a U-turn arrow for longer periods of time and a wing for shorter periods of time) or disappearing (telegraphed by a Boo picture on their design). The stack is also infinite. | +2 (regular bombs) +5 (bombs that behave weirdly) |
Slingsniper | Shoot monsters with the B Button! Try to hit multiple monsters at once. | EXP Bro Gloves DX | The pullback phase is automatic, and pressing B launches Luigi. | Starts at 5 (Excellent!) +Starts at 4 (Great!) Starts at 3 (Good!) +Starts at 2 (Okay!) +Starts at 1 (Bad) +1 for each target struck in one launch. |
Star Rocket | Tilt the Star Rocket to collect stars, but avoid damage balloons! | Perfect Bro Gloves | The stomping phase is omitted, the Bros. have to dodge the balloon-like mines from the Dropchopper challenge, the big star serving as their vehicle has a fuel gauge that drains constantly and is refilled by collecting the smaller stars, and there are different stars that impose different effects, such as purple stars that give ten points, blue stars that speed up the craft and triple point values, and Super Stars that grant invincibility and double point values, in addition to causing the balloon-like mines to behave like regular stars. | +1 per regular star +10 per purple star x3 when moving quickly x2 when invincible (Balloon-like mines count as regular stars while the player is invincible.) |
