Relatives

Spike Basses[1] are aquatic enemies in New Super Mario Bros. that resembles giant porcupinefish. It also has beaming yellow eyes, sharp teeth, and spikes all over its body. The Spike Bass is encountered only in World 2-A and World 3-C, where it jumps from the water and tries to attack Mario or Luigi similarly to Boss Bass but without attempting to eat them. The Spike Bass can be defeated from either a fireball, a Koopa Shell, a Starman, or a Mega Mushroom, though it will respawn a few seconds later. Later games give this enemy's behavior to Porcupuffer, which does not jump in earlier appearances.
