Two Fly Guys as they appear in Mario Party 8.

A Fly Guy is a sub-species of Shy Guy. They have propellers on their heads and have various jobs. They are not to be confused with Flying Shy Guys or Sky Guys.

History

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Fly Guys as they appeared in Yoshi's Island.

Fly Guys first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. In the game they carried Items like Red Coins, 1-Ups, or even bombs. In some levels one of them would swoop down carrying a ? Cloud full of stars, and if Yoshi didn't get them in time the Fly Guy would float back up and laugh mockingly. They behaved similarly in Yoshi's Island DS, except they did not carry bombs.

Yoshi's Story

Fly Guys make an appearance in Yoshi's Story. They would come in a line of four. If the Yoshi could defeat all four with one egg, he would be awarded with a melon. They appear in Stage 3-3: Poochy and Nippy and Stage 3-4: Frustration.

Super Mario 64

Fire Guys as they appeared in Super Mario 64.

In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS, Fly Guys, here called Fire Guys, appear in Shifting Sand Land. They fly around the course, spitting fireballs at Mario, trying to force the plumber into the lethal quicksand. They also appear in Tiny-Huge Island. This time, the Fly Guys spit fire at Mario near ledges, trying to kick him off the ledge. A single Fly Guy appears on Tall Tall Mountain next to Ukiki. They also appear in Rainbow Cruise, though in a small number. These are the only games where they have the ability to produce flames. When Mario stomps a Fly Guy in Super Mario 64, he will Spin Jump high up into the air. This allows him to reach high places. The Fly Guys share this effect with the Spindrifts.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

Fly Guys had minor roles in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, appearing as enemies in Star Hill. Now, they carried time bombs. A Fly Guy could drop it, but if one countered his attack, it could sometimes go to 0, hurting the Fly Guy. He, if not dead, will get another. The bomb varies to 3, 2, 1, and then 0. He has a few turns before the bomb goes to 0.

They also appeared if the player caused a Boom Guy to lose its launcher. A pair of red Fly Guys will drop a new one on its head. The same thing applies for Elite Boom Guys except the Fly Guys are blue.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl Fly Guys appear on the Yoshi's Island stage. They are usually holding some kind of food. If they are attacked they will drop the food the are holding, or if they are not holding any food, will just fly away. A Fly Guy also appeared as a Sticker, depicting its artwork from Mario Power Tennis.

Fly Guy debuted in Mario spin-offs in Mario Power Tennis, as a secret character known for his technique. He reappeared in Mario Hoops 3 on 3 as a Tricky player, where, strangely, Shy Guy was not playable.

Fly Guys have been noted for some important roles in the Mario Party series; for example, Fly Guy is responsible for Duel Mini-games in Mario Party 5. Two Fly Guys appear on the box art of Mario Party 8. A secret technique with the Mic causes Fly guys to fly across the menu screen in Mario Party 6. However, they only appear through cameos.
