Template:Character-infobox Template:Quote2 King Olly,[1] also known by his title Origami King[2] (or origami king) or simply Olly,[3] is the leader of the Folded Soldiers, and the titular main antagonist of Paper Mario: The Origami King. He is the elder brother of Olivia[4], and he turned many paper characters including Princess Peach into origami figures and made them fall under his control. His traits include his folded crown and hair, his purple robe, and his spiky limbs. He is sometimes seen with a dark tan, striped patch of hair, purple skin, and glowing purple eyes. He can also fold himself into a yellow Shy Guy, which he uses as a disguise. His endgame is to wipe all the Toads out of existence using the Thousand Cranes technique.
History
Background
King Olly was created by the green Toad Origami Craftsman, to fit into an origami castle created for the Toads' Origami Festival. However, because he was made with the forbidden Fold of Life technique, he was granted sentience upon completion. Furthermore, the Origami Craftsman wrote a message on King Olly wishing he would grow into a great king, but Olly misinterpreted it as a "careless scrawl" and became embittered. King Olly then folded his sister, Olivia, using the same technique, and began to view all Toads with contempt due to them all being the same to him, which eventually grew into a genocidal hatred of them. This became the basis for his grudge against entities made of flat paper instead of origami. Eventually, he would imprison his sister in the walls of the Peach's Castle dungeon, due to her rebelling against his cause.
Paper Mario: The Origami King
While disguised as a yellow Shy Guy, King Olly created the Folded Soldiers out of flat paper (using the Stapler to keep them from unfolding themselves), and stole Princess Peach's castle using five paper streamers; planning to turn it into a replica of the castle made for the origami festival. When Mario, Olivia and Bowser all confront him, they all get thrown out the Castle by Olly's paper streamers.
He reappears in Sweetpaper Valley where he crushes Olivia beneath a boulder and blocks the entrance to a cave needed to get to the yellow streamer.
When confronted in Peach's Castle, he transforms the castle into Origami Castle and sticks Princess Peach on the wall in his throne room. He attempts to kill Olivia with a Stapler, which leaves her somewhat traumatized until Bowser and Mario both reassure her. He then battles with Mario, Olivia and Bowser by using his shapeshifting powers by turning into a Vellumental that has all four powers of the other Vellumentals. After his first defeat, he expresses anger at Olivia siding against him and annoyance at his defeat, before showing his "true power of origami", by turning into a giant origami version of himself. He gets defeated again by Mario, Olivia and a transformed origami Bowser, but Olly again emerges at a gigantic size. However, with Mario and Olivia's power, Olly is defeated once and for all.
King Olly then shows true remorse at what he has done, and decides to grant them a wish using the Thousand Cranes technique - folding 1,000 paper cranes to get a wish - to compensate for his misdeeds, even telling Olivia to fold his body into the final crane. As 999 cranes were folded by Olly himself, the Origami Craftsman and Olivia fold Olly and complete the wish: to undo all of King Olly's origami folding.
In the game's 100% ending, a miniature, inanimate version of Olly appears in the scaled-down model of his castle, alongside his sister, fulfilling the role his creator had always intended him to.
Battle
Phase one
The final battle with King Olly is divided into the three phases. The first phase plays like a regular boss battle. King Olly deploys the Magic Circles of all four Vellumentals, and uses their abilities. Additionally, if Mario takes too long to organize the rings, King Olly will occasionally heal himself. If Mario takes a long enough time, King Olly will take longer to heal, and will heal for less HP.
King Olly begins the battle by turning into a random Vellumental. He can transform into the Earth Vellumental, and immediately charges to use Mega Earthquake next turn which deals approximately 150 damage, and cannot be dodged by using the Earth Vellumental, as Olly will simply lower the platform again. Instead, Mario must stand on a Vellumental Magic Circle and activate the Ice Vellumental, freezing King Olly and cancelling this attack. Mario can then use a rush attack from the 1,000-Fold Arms to deal heavy damage to him, reverting him to his original form.
King Olly can also transform into the Water Vellumental, and immediately charges Big Wave for about 180 damage, in addition to using Summon Spouts, which, unlike the original, rotate on their own during the lineup phase. Like with the regular Water Vellumental, Mario must use the Earth Vellumental to avoid this attack, then damage King Olly with the 1,000-Fold Arms.
King Olly can also transform into the Fire Vellumental. Olly will immediately after use Molten Feathers to release all of his wing feathers, taking almost half of his health as damage in the process, then charges an attack. If the feathers are not extinguished, he will use Hot Wings next turn to heal himself. Like with the regular Fire Vellumental, Mario must use the Water Vellumental to weaken King Olly and then rush attack with the 1,000-Fold Arms and pluck out his head feathers.
Finally, King Olly is able to transform into the Ice Vellumental. Initially Olly will create an Ice Maze which shows only one safe route that must be memorized before it gets shuffled. then, he will encase himself in a block of ice and charge Ice Age, dealing about 150 damage. To negate this, Mario must use the Fire Vellumental to melt Olly, then use 1,000-Fold Arms attack to return him to his normal form.
If Mario is unable to defeat King Olly after all four Vellumental forms are defeated, King Olly will reactivate the Magic Circles and pick a random Vellumental.
Phase two
Starting from this phase, 1-Up Mushrooms become disabled and are unable to revive Mario when his HP reaches zero. Any extra HP from Heart Plus accessories are carried over.
The gameplay for this phase is similar to fighting in the overworld. King Olly transforms into a giant Origami version of himself, which Olivia counters by transforming Bowser into a giant Origami version of himself. As King Olly and Bowser fight, Mario must stand on a Magic Circle behind Bowser, activate the 1,000-Fold Arms, and repeatedly slam the ground. King Olly will eventually fire shurikens at Mario who must avoid them as he makes his way to Bowser. After enough slams, King Olly will summon an Origami Thwomp, and Mario must keep slamming on the ground enough times before the Thwomp crushes him. Should Bowser not receive enough support or Mario not defeat the phase before the Thwomp crushes him, it is a game over.
Phase three
For the final phase, Olivia places a giant Magic Circle on the ground. However, King Olly, who is now a giant floating off the edge of the battlefield, scrambles the Magic Circle. Mario must reorganize the Magic Circle back to its original state before time runs out, resulting in poison rising and an instant game over. As Mario organizes the circle, King Olly will attack at certain intervals which must be dodged just as appears on the screen.
When the Magic Circle is back to normal, King Olly will attack a few more times, and Mario must keep dodging. After avoiding enough attacks. Mario can use the Magic Circle to activate the 1,000-Fold Arms and rush attack King Olly. Olivia then transforms into the Olivia Hammer, and Mario bashes King Olly with her, mortally wounding him and ending the fight.
Abilities
Owing to his being made of origami, he is capable of shapeshifting, utilizing it to disguise himself as a yellow origami Shy Guy to infiltrate Peach's Castle, and also to utilize the appearance of the four elemental Vellumentals. He also was capable of reality-warping, an extension of his origami-related abilities, which when fueled by his rage can also cause poison to emerge.
