Boomerang Bros. are a type of Hammer Bros. who, instead of throwing hammers, use boomerangs as weapons. In Super Mario Bros. 3, Boomerang Brothers appear as somewhat common enemies, attacking Mario or Luigi by throwing multiple boomerangs at them, which always flew back to the Boomerang Brothers. In order to defeat a Boomerang Brother, Mario or Luigi would need to jump on it or throw something at it, such as a fireball or shell. In Dark Land, Boomerang Brothers also appear as the captains of Bowser's tank and ship forces.

In Yoshi's Safari, Boomerang Brothers would occasionally appear as mini-bosses who would attack Mario and Yoshi by throwing boomerangs at them; the Boomerang Brothers of Yoshi's Safari are difficult adversaries to defeat, as they posses a large amount of health and run back and forth quite quickly. Also of note, in Yoshi's Safari, Mario could knock away a Boomerang Brothers thrown boomerangs by blasting them with his Super Scope.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Boomerang Brothers, though extremely thin, tall and wearing sunglasses and sprouts on their heads, appear as enemies in Gwarhar Lagoon. In battle, these Boomerang Brothers would throw boomerangs, which Mario and Luigi would need to dodge on the boomerang's first throw and it's return. A single Boomerang Brother, named Bamma, appears in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door as a competitor in the Glitz Pit; like the Boomerang Brothers in Super Mario Bros. 3, Bamma will attack Mario by either throwing a single boomerang at him or multiple ones.

In Mario Superstar Baseball, one of the alternate color schemes for the game's playable Hammer Brother is a Boomerang Brother, who wields a large boomerang in place of a baseball bat. In New Super Mario Bros., Boomerang Brothers appear as somewhat rare enemies, who will attack Mario or Luigi by throwing boomerangs at them. The most recent appearance of Boomerang Brothers was in Super Paper Mario, which featured several Boomerang Brothers which had been brainwashed by Nastasia to serve under Count Bleck. Super Paper Mario also featured a new, shadowed sub-species of Boomerang Brothers known as Dark Boomerang Brothers.

Appearances in Other Media

Anime

In the Momotarō segment of the Super Mario Amada Series, a Boomerang Brother appears as an ally of Mario, helping him rescue Princess Peach and defeat the evil ogre Bowser.

Cartoons

Boomerang Bros. also appeared several times in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, serving as soldiers in Bowser's army. Through the use of their boomerangs, Boomerang Bros. were practical in long range attacks. Unlike in the game, it was not uncommon for Boomerang Bros. on the show to travel together in groups.

Publications

A Boomerang Bro. made a relatively minor appearance in Nintendo Comics System issue "The Kingdom Enquirer", which had one appearing to attack Mario and Toad with it's boomerangs after the two exit a Warp Pipe. In a Nintendo Adventure Book "Monster Mix-up", a Boomerang Brother that has been fused with a Goomba is briefly seen by Mario and Toad.

Trivia

  • Originally, Boomerang Brothers were portrayed as being green in color and possessing black armor, though more recently, they have been shown to be yellow in color and either wearing bright blue or gray colored armoring.
