Their name is a portmanteau of "Troopa" and "pea", the latter of which is a legume like a bean. Troopeas have dark blue shells and sprouts on their heads, and are found mainly in the south-eastern area outside Beanbean Castle Town, near Woohoo Hooniversity. Troopeas are rather basic enemies, with their only method of attack being to ram either Mario or Luigi, although they can create small water droplets that restore HP in their allies. If they manages to jump on a Troopea's shell while countering its ramming attack, their shell will be shot toward the other enemies and will damage them. Parabeanies sometimes appear with Troopeas in battle.
Later, in Gwarhar Lagoon, a stronger version of the Troopea called the Elite Troopea appears, which have red shells in contrast with the Troopea's blue ones. There are also winged variants of Troopeas called Paratroopeas.
