A Cherry is a special item found in Super Mario Bros. 2. When Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, or Toad collects five Cherries, an invincibility-granting Starman floats from the ground. Cherries appear in abundance in this game, and many can be found in every level. In the GBA remake, each time one is collected, the character will say "Lucky!" They also appear in the slot machines of the same game. When a player lines up even one of them, he or she receives points and extra lives. They reappear as icons in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island's slot minigame.

A Cherry-shaped cloud can be seen in the background of Cloudy Climb in Paper Mario, and Cherries later appear in the background of Super Smash Bros. Melee's Mushroom Kingdom 2 (a.k.a Subcon) stage. However, they are just for scenery.

Cherries are meant to be thrown in the 4-player or duel Mario Party DS Minigame Cherry Go Round where the person that throws his or her cherry the furthest is the winner of the event.

Double Cherries appear in Super Mario 3D World as a power-up that enables Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad or Rosalina to duplicate themselves.
