Mario jumping away from a Bookend.
A Bookend coming after Mario.

Bookends are large living books in Luigi's Mansion 2, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS.

History

Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS

Bookends only appear in the course Big Boo's Haunt. Bookends possess sharp teeth and disguise themselves as regular books within a bookshelf. They hop out to attack Mario if he gets close enough. The green books disappear if they hit anything, including Mario.

If Mario jumps above the books, the book will disappear and release a Blue Coin. If Mario is hit by a Bookend, he loses two life points.

Mario Party 8

Bookends also appear in Mario Party 8 in King Boo's Haunted Hideaway. They hover around in the rooms instead of lunging at players.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, several Bookends appear in the Gloomy Manor's library, where they are controlled by a Poltergeist. They come after Luigi when he tries to get to the Dining Room on the first floor during A-3: Quiet Please!. During A-2: Gear Up, they just ly on the ground.

Trivia

  • Bookends are very similar to Ghost Books from Donkey Kong 64.
  • In A-2 Geared Up, if Luigi peaks trough the hole to the Library, goes back and peaks trough the hole again, the books will start hovering.
