Spinies are four-legged Koopas first appearing in Super Mario Bros.. They are only thrown by Lakitus in unlimited supplies, but they also are moving creatures making them both weapons and species. The only way to defeat them was to shoot a Fireball at them or touch them while being invincible from a Starman. Spinies are related to Buzzy Beetles which are similar four-legged but spikeless Koopas. Some Spinies don't come from Lakitus.
Game Appearances
In Super Mario Bros. 3 they are defeated by numerous power-ups and are spawned the same way as before. Also since this game featured the first bonus Mario Bros. game, it also made a couple of changes to the original version, including replacing Shellcreepers with Spinies.
Spinies made a rare appearance in Super Mario 64 and ten years later in Super Mario 64 DS. It could only be found thrown by Lakitu in Tiny-Huge Island and Rainbow Ride. This was the only game in which Spinies were impossible to defeat.
Spinies reappear in Paper Mario. The best method to defeat them is to use a POW Block, although a Hammer could do the job.
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Spinies and their sub-species Sharpeas, along with Lakipeas, infested the sewers of Beanbean Castle. However, instead of their traditional appearance, they had green shells, yellow spikes, and very high defense (at that point in the game).
Many new varieties of Spinies were introduced in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Just like in Paper Mario, an effective way of defeating them is to use a Hammer or an item.
Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, had Spinies, but it also introduced Ice Spinies.
Their latest appearance is in the New Super Mario Bros.. They are treated the same way as in their older side-scrolling games such as Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3. They have a new added ability to float in the water by transforming into a Spiny Egg.
Spinies have also made several appearances in the Mario Party series and the Mario Sport series.
Paper Mario Stats and Tattle Information
- HP: 5
- Attack: 4
- Defense: 3
- Location: Flower Fields
- Tattle:This is a Spiny. Spinies have spikes on their shells that are pretty sharp. They'll roll into Spiny Eggs and slam into you. It'll be much easier to fight them if you can flip them over. Their defense power falls to 0.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Stats and Tattle Information
- Stats:
- HP: 3
- Attack: 3
- Defense: 3
- Locations: Glitzville, Pit of 100 Trials (Levels 21-29)
- Tattle: That's a Spiny. Basically a spike-covered Koopa. Ugh! Looks painful! These things have such high defense that you can't even hurt them when they roll up. So, when they go back to normal, do all the damage you can, and do it quickly! If you flip them over, their Defense drops to 0. THAT'S the time to take them out. Jumping on them is just plain stupid, so try using a POW Block or some other item.
- Tattle Number: 29
- Tattle Log: A spike-covered member of the Koopa Tribe with extremely high Defense. It cannot be damaged when it rolls into a ball.
Trivia
- A cry of "Enjoy your Spiny Burgers here!" can be heard during a certain scene in the Super Mario Bros. movie; a Spiny Burger is thought to be a hamburger-like, edible form of Spiny.
