Spindels are a sub-species of Thwomp that first appeared in Super Mario 64. They are tube-shaped creatures made of stone that attack by rolling into targets.
History
Super Mario 64
In Super Mario 64, Spindels appear as mummified rolling Thwomps with a demonic grin and malicious eyes that try to run over Mario, and cause damage to the plumber. A Spindel only appears inside the Pyramid of the course Shifting Sand Land, where it can be found rolling back and forth in a section of the pyramid. There is a safe spot where Mario can hide, so he can avoid being squished. Its closest relative is the Grindel.
Super Mario 64 DS
Spindels also appear in the Nintendo DS remake of Super Mario 64 DS, where they behave exactly as they did in the original, but with more updated graphics that make their mummy-like appearance more noticeable.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Spindels do not appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2, but a very similar enemy called a Rhomp appears.
