In video games, bosses are powerful enemies found in levels. They are usually fought at the end of the level, world, or chapter. Usually, the player cannot advance to the next level until the boss is defeated. However, there are certain exceptions to this rule. Bosses are usually much harder to defeat than all the other enemies in that level or world.

Mini-Bosses or Mid-Bosses are bosses that are found in the middle of the level and are usually not as strong as a boss.

Final Bosses are the last bosses that are fought in a game and usually the hardest enemy fought in the entire game. Once the Final Boss or Bosses have been defeated, the game is finished. However, there have been times when the game does not immediately end and the player may need to complete an extra task first (example: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga).

Optional Bosses are bosses that exist in the game, but that do not need to be defeated for the player to beat the game. Sometimes, Optional Bosses are even harder than Final Bosses (like The Master and Bonetail). Template:CompactTOC3

Here is a list of all of the Bosses that appear in the Mario series, with the first game in which they appeared as boss next to their name. Final Bosses are in bold, Optional Bosses are in italics.
