The game is very popular, not only for being one of Nintendo's few fighting games, but also being a mass cross-over of many of the popular Nintendo Series. This includes Mario series, Pokémon series, The Legend of Zelda series, Metroid series, Kirby's Dream Land series, and many more. It also has numerous character cameos, as well as the reintroduction of many locations. It has become the quickest selling, and one of the most popular series in Nintendo history. Super Smash Bros. Melee is the best-selling game for the GameCube. Masahiro Sakurai has so far directed all three games.

Game Series in the Series
Mario Series
The possbile main series of the Smash Bros. series; characters from the Mario series have appeared in all three games, two (excluding Donkey Kong and Yoshi) in SSB, four in Melee, and four in Brawl. These characters are Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser. This series excludes Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Wario from the list, due to them having their own series.
Donkey Kong Series
A minor series in the SSB series, the Donkey Kong series consists of Donkey Kong and his nephew, Diddy Kong. Donkey had made appearances in all three games, while Diddy was introduced in Brawl.
WarioWare Series
Another minor series, this series has only Wario appearing as a playable character in an SSB game (Brawl).
Yoshi Series
A minor series; the Yoshi series has only character, being the star, Yoshi has appeared in all Smash games.
Legend of Zelda Series
Another one of the biggest series, Link, Princess Zelda/Sheik, Young Link, Toon Link, and Ganondorf represent this series. Link had made his appearance in all Smash game, and Zelda/Sheik and Ganondorf followed, appearing in Melee and Brawl. Young Link only appeared in Melee, while Toon Link replaced him in Brawl.
Pokemon Series
The second biggest series ever, the Pokemon series is represented by Pikachu (all), Jigglypuff (all), Mewtwo (Melee), Pichu (Melee), Pokemon Trainer (along with Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard; Brawl), and Lucario (Brawl). Metriod Series
A big series, the series is represented by only two characters, Samus (all), and Zero Suit Samus (Brawl). As like the Kirby series, the star, Samus, only appeared in the first two (despite Metriod being a big series).
F-Zero Series
A somewhat big series, it is represented only by Captain Falcon, whom has appeared in all Smash games.
Star Fox Series
A big series, its represented by Fox (all), Falco (Melee, Brawl), and Wolf (Brawl). It is considered the fifth biggest video game series (done by Nintendo) in the world.
Playable Characters in the Series
The series is nothing without the characters to play as. Over the entire series, 41 characters have been playable, 11 are new for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Each series gets its own Symbol, which each of the characters from that series use. They all have their own powers and attributes, that allow players to work out strategies against opponents.
