Bumpers[1] are items from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that knock the player back after contact with it. These items make one appearance in the Super Mario franchise within the game Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 during the Tower Climb, Tokyo Sky Flight and Bullet Train Blast minigames. In Tower Climb, Bumpers are either used as springs to help Tails jump higher, or they knock Tails, possibly leading him to fall. In Tokyo Sky Flight, Bumpers are used as shields used by enemies to deflect shots fired by the Tornado, and in Bullet Train Blast, they are obstacles that knock Sonic backwards, slowing him down.
