Polar Extreme is a Free-for-All minigame in Mario Party 9. Its name is based on the terminology "polar extreme," which represents radical viewpoints.
Introduction
The camera focuses on the ship at the end. Then, it switches to the players.
Gameplay
As the screen auto-scrolls to the right, the competitors must reach the ship or survive by jumping on breakable ice chunks that shift under their weight. If the player falls into the water, they are temporarily frozen before returning to the ice chunk, but they can leap out of the water by pressing rapidly. The player can fall into the water only three times in a row; they will become frozen solid if they do not reach solid ground in time. The player loses if they fall behind the scrolling screen or become frozen in ice. Penguins can be found on some chunks of ice as obstacles, stunning any player who touches them. Players can jump on the penguins to flatten them for about a second. Occasionally, jumping on a bigger chunk of ice results in it shattering into smaller pieces. The player who jumps onto the ship or survives longest wins.
Ending
There are a couple things that are able to happen. The last player remaining freezes but still wins. The last player remaining jumps on the ship and does a victory pose or if more people reach the ship. The players in 1st, 2nd and 3rd do a victory pose while the player in 4th just stands in their idle animation.
