Firefoxes makes their first appearance in the original Donkey Kong and in the remake for the Game Boy as enemies. Firefoxes emerge from the Oil Drums and then chase after Mario, trying to burn him. If Mario is touched by a Firefox, he will lose a life and be forced to restart the level. Firefoxes will go to extremes to burn Mario, even climbing up Ladders - no matter if they are broken or fixed. If Mario jumps over a Firefox, he will get Points but the only way to destroy them is with a Hammer. Firefoxes only appear in three levels of the game; 25m, 50m and 75m. In the fourth level they are replaced by Fires.

Super Mario Bros. Special

Their next appearance was in Super Mario Bros. Special where they were credited as Shigebō (シゲボー). The name was created by Hudson's staff.
