Just Dance is a series of rhythm video games created by Ubisoft. It features games in which players have to dance to songs by choreographing their movements.
A song based on the Super Mario franchise appears in three games of the series: Just Dance Wii and Just Dance 3 for the Wii, and Just Dance 2018 for the Nintendo Switch. The latter game also features Mario + Rabbids content.
Overview[edit]
The gameplay of the Just Dance games consist in dancing to a song by following the movements of a dancer on screen via a motion controller like the Wii Remote or a camera. The same movements are also shown with pictograms on the bottom-right of the screen. Players are awarded points by following the dancer's movements accurately, and can earn additional ones by striking special moves known as "Gold moves", with their performance awarding them a certain rank.
History in the Just Dance franchise[edit]
Just Dance Wii[edit]
The Japan-exclusive Just Dance Wii features a Super Mario-themed track called "Just Mario" with the artist credited as "Ubisoft meets Nintendo". It can be unlocked by playing all the other songs in the game. The song is composed of arrangements of "Ground BGM", "Invincibility BGM", and "Underground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. featuring samples from the original themes and their Super Mario All-Stars arrangements. A mascot costume of Mario acts as the dancer.
The song starts with the title screen of Super Mario Bros., which then transitions into Mario in a ground setting with "Ground BGM" playing. A Spiny, a Koopa Paratroopa, and a Lakitu appear in the background, and a Gold move of Mario hitting a Brick Block is present during this part. Mario then obtains a Super Star, and the song changes to "Invincibility BGM" before a Warp Pipe appears, changing the setting to a castle while "Underground BGM" plays. Mario also gets a Fire Flower and turns into Fire Mario in this part before being hit by a Buzzy Beetle. The song then returns to the ground setting near a Goal Pole and fortress (with "JD" for Just Dance on both flags). Another Brick Block Gold move is on this part. On the last minute, "Timer Warning" plays and the song speeds up. After two additional Brick Block Gold moves, the screen transitions to Mario clearing a level in Super Mario Bros. while the phrase "THANK YOU FOR PLAYING!" is shown.
Just Dance 3[edit]
"Just Mario" reappears as downloadable content in the Wii version of Just Dance 3, where it was sold for 250 Wii Points. It is identical to its Just Dance Wii iteration except for the addition of a TV turning on before the Super Mario Bros. title screen.
Just Dance 2018[edit]
"Just Mario" is included in the Nintendo Switch version of Just Dance 2018 as content available exclusively with the Just Dance Unlimited subscription service. The song has been rearranged and remade to represent more modern games. The Super Mario Bros. intro and general theming was removed, and the ground background now shows Peach's Castle and Semisolid Platforms in their designs from New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. 2. The castle background was replaced by an underground one based on New Super Mario Bros. U with Piranha Plants, Goombas, and crystals that tilt with Mario. The background's color now changes into a rainbow pattern when the song speeds up. The ending was replaced with a circle transition.
The Just Dance Unlimited service also includes an alternate version of the song "Naughty Girl" by Beyoncé with Rabbid Peach as the dancer. The background of this version shows Peach's Castle from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle with Rabbids doing various activities. The pose pictograms are also Rabbid-shaped. This version's Gold move is Rabbid Peach taking a selfie with her phone.[1]
