Fortune Island is a location from Paper Mario: Color Splash. The path leading here is unlocked after getting the purple Mini Paint Star in Lighthouse Island, and when the Purple Big Paint Star in here is rescued, it will color in a massive sinkhole at Mustard Café. Wendy is the boss of this area. The Charcoal Grill Thing can be found here, and must be acquired to enter the final room.
If Mario returns to Fortune Island after collecting the purple Big Paint Star, the Violet Passage captain can be seen training with the legendary captain.
Layout[edit]
After docking at Fortune Island, the captain is initially hesitant until the Toad shipmates encourage him. Mario is notified that the skull-shaped rock has an entrance, but the crew cannot enter due to it being flooded with water. He must hammer down four posts to reveal a Warp Pipe to Fortune Island's parallel world. Here, the water has been drained and Mario can enter the skull, then navigate to its ear holes and knock a rock out, creating a shortcut in both the regular world and the parallel one. Back in the regular world, the crew has observed the rock falling out and Mario must enter it.
Mario is unable to jump back out through the hole, so the crew try to find a way to get in. Here, Mario must navigate to the far left of the room, then jump on two barrels and hammer a wall in. This reveals an area containing Coins and an Unfurl Block. Additionally, there are stacked barrels that lead to the other ear hole exit, and exiting through it leads to a small area with a ? Block. Mario must unfurl a barrel with a red mark, creating a bridge.
Farther into the cave is a sequence of spikes on the ground, and then a series of torches, some lit and some unlit. In the next room, Huey smells the purple Big Paint Star, but when he and Mario go to investigate, the room is too smoky to breathe. Shortly after this is a group of five treasure chests, with the middle one unpainted. The four chests around it all contain one Coin each, with the exception of one containing a note from Snifit or Whiffit. The middle chest is hollow and leads to an area below, which contains a small volcano pouring out smoke.
Exiting this room leads back outside the skull. The captain is surprised at seeing Mario again and sends his crew in, forming a ladder so Mario can exit easily. In the parallel world, Mario can now explore more of the cave due to the bridge being formed. To avoid the spikes, Mario must stay at the top for the first two steps, then the bottom, then the middle. For the torches, Mario must light the second, fifth, and sixth, with the first, third, and fourth unlit. This opens up a door, allowing him to continue.
There is another smoky room in this area. The treasure chests are replaced by crates that contain nothing, although the middle one still leads deeper into the area. Here, instead of a volcano, is the legendary captain cooking with a barbecue grill. After Mario squeezes the grill, the captain is outraged and follows Mario around to annoy him. Once Mario goes back to the normal world, the legendary captain sees the other captain and is so relieved to see another Toad that he forgives Mario.
Returning to the formerly-smoky room, the Big Paint Star is now clearly visible. Before Mario and Huey can get it, Wendy comes out of a clam and battles him. After taking enough damage, Wendy spins in her shell and prepares to throw a ring. Mario must use the Instant Camera Thing from Cobalt Base to get a photo of himself, and Wendy directs the attack at his picture instead. After Wendy is defeated, she tells Mario that he is "kind of cute" and disappears. The two captains enter the room, with the legendary captain explaining that the treasure of Fortune Island had already been claimed before he arrived. He encourages the other captain that there is still treasure to be discovered elsewhere, and the other captain is excited. Once the captains leave, Mario can collect the Big Paint Star, which paints in the sinkhole in Mustard Café.
In the parallel version of the smoky room, the Salt and Pepper Thing can be found instead of the Big Paint Star.
