The Assist Trophy is an item in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This is unique, as it will call forth a random character to assist the player who used the item, similiar to the Poké Ball item. This is unique in the fact that, the character released is from an actual Nintendo or 3rd Party series, but can't be playable. So, it introduces characters who couldn't make the cut as playable fighters. Almost all characters that come out of the Assist Trophy are invincible.
The Assist Trophy (alternatively formatted as assist trophy) is an item in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It calls forth a random character to assist the player who used the item, similar to the Poké Ball item. This is unique in that the character released is from an actual Nintendo or third-party series, but is not playable. As a result, it introduces characters who did not make the cut as playable fighters.

<br clear="all">
Some Assist Trophy characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl are unlockable, and almost every character is invincible; however, in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, all Assist Trophy characters are available from the start, and many characters can take damage and can even be KO'd (in the latter game, the opponent that defeats them earns a point), although characters that do not appear on the stage itself such as Andross and Nintendog remain invulnerable to attacks.
List of Assist Characters
Default Assist Characters
Players must be on the ground to summon an Assist Trophy's character. If a player is attacked and sent flying after grabbing the Assist Trophy, but before breaking it open, they must land before they can call forth the Assist Trophy's character. Only one Assist Trophy can appear at a time, unlike Poké Balls, except in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

| align=center | Custom Robo
| Custom Robo, better known as Ray Mk III, comes from the game Custom Robo Arena. Being a toy, it is a very small Assist Character, but it makes the most of its speed by flying around the stage at fast speeds. It fires bullets from its left gun, and drops bombs from its right hand, as a means of attack. To unlock it, the player must play 100 matches in Vs. Mode or any related mode.

| A group of 2D sprites from the Advance Wars series will appear in the scenery to attack the rival. To unlock them, the player must play 300 matches in Vs. Mode or any related mode.
|align=left|A character who throws a seemingly endless stream of hammers. Hammer Bros. have also been known to jump every so often. Since they throw their hammers in a high arc, if you manage to get in close, the hammers can't hit you. Unlike Koopas and Buzzy Beetles, Hammer Bros. don't reduce to their shells when jumped on. As the name suggests, most Hammer Bros. are found in pairs.

|Kat & Ana
| Barbara enters from the Japan-Only game, Daigassou! Band Brothers. When released, she plays her guitar, sending a powerful field of music around her, which damages opposing players caught in it. The final note does the most damage. To unlock her, the player must collect 25 hidden songs.
|align=left|Twin female ninjas who attend Diamond City Kindergarten. Kat, the older of the two, has pink hair, while the younger Ana has orange hair. Both of the girls are still very young, but they're also very respectful and address their superiors as budding ninjas should. Kat and Ana have a soft spot for living things. Kat loves cats, and Ana is attracted to flowers.

| Gray Fox, from the Metal Gear series, slices his opponents with his sword, causing heavy damage. He also deflects projectiles. To unlock him, the player must unlock Snake.
|align=left|A particularly stubborn breed of Koopa. Lakitus chase Mario aboard clouds and attack by throwing Spiny Eggs down from above. More recently, Lakitus have taken over the role of cameramen, filming with cameras that they dangle from long rods. Spinies are Koopa creatures with tough, spiked shells. Jumping onto them has no effect, but fireballs can dispatch them.

| Shadow, from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, appears as a Assist Trophy. Shadow uses Chaos Control to slow down all opposing fighters. To unlock him, the player must unlock Sonic.
|align=left|A twig-thin man who sees himself as Luigi's ultimate rival. He spent a long time working silently in the shadow of the Mario Bros. before finally becoming strong enough to compete with them in Mario Tennis. Since then, he's had many brilliant game appearances. While the nature of his relationship to Wario is a mystery, the pair have hatched some devious schemes together.

| align=center | Andross
| Star Fox's archenemy. Whether it's a metallic manifestation of Andross or just a hologram is unknown, but from its outward appearance, it's safe to assume that it's not the fiend's true form. Andross occasionally sucks matter in and then violently exhales, sending out a cloud of metal tiles. Its eyes are its weak points.

|
| align=center | Dr. Wright
|Ashley
| The assistant to the mayor of Sim City, Dr. Wright was actually named after the creator of the game. As a player, you'd have to use your wisdom and experience to give timely advice to the mayor; if you did a good job, the city prospered. Dr. Wright is one of the leaders in the all-time, bizarre Nintendo-game-hairstyle contest.
|align=left|This young witch-in-training lives in a haunted mansion in Diamond City. She's shy and quick to anger, but secretly she wants more friends. When she appears on the battlefield, she will summon a damaging zone of darkness around her. The zone causes a variety of effects, none of them good.
|align=left|Who's the girl next door living in the haunted mansion? You'd better learn her name, 'cause she's Aa-ashley! This little witch loves cursing people, but also wants more friends. Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it, too... In battle, she conjures a zone of darkness that both damages and shrinks other fighters!

|
| align=center | Excitebike
|Chain Chomp
| This top-of-the-line motocross motorcycle can accelerate like crazy with its turbo, but this also causes the temperature gauge to rise rapidly; if used too often, the bike will overheat. You can cool your hot bike down by running over special icons scattered across the track. The turbo and ramps let you pull insane airs.
|align=left|This beast frequently appears in the Super Mario series, and it is definitely equal parts bark and bite. No surprise it's often chained to something. In Smash Bros., it's connected to a stump in the ground and will lash out at anyone who gets close. Don't even bother trying to teach it manners.
|align=left|An iron ball with a face, complete with shiny white teeth, that shows up fairly often in the Mario series. They're impossible to tame, so they're almost always chained to a post, and this game's no exception. Seriously, don't go anywhere near them unless you want to end up a Chomp's dinner.

|Hammer Bro
| Kururin sets off in his specialized helicopter to rescue his siblings who have lost their way somewhere among ten worlds. The helicopter is fitted with an enormous blade, which propels the machine forward by slowly rotating. The mazes that Kururin must navigate are narrow and filled with all kinds of strange obstacles.
|align=left|These elite trooper turtles usually appeared in pairs in Super Mario Bros., wearing helmets and chucking hammers at Mario. When summoned, they'll advance on the nearest opponent and lob hammers in a graceful arc. Sometimes they'll throw in a jump to mix things up.
|align=left|Hammer Bros. usually appear in pairs in Super Mario Bros. games. With helmets on heads and hammers in hand, Bowser's elite troops never leg it when Mario shows up. In this game, they appear solo, flinging hammers at the nearest target. They can also jump and throw, so stay sharp!

| align=center | Jeff
|Kat & Ana
| Another of Ness's close friends in EarthBound, Jeff is the only son of the famous scientist, Dr. Andonuts. Jeff is a mechanical genius, able to turn common, broken tools into complex weapons like the Hungry HP-sucker and the Slime Generator. He's a bit on the shy side but incredibly intelligent and brave in the heat of battle.
|align=left|These ninja twin sisters of the Iga Clan attend Diamond City Kindergarten. The high-tech katanas they carry, made by Dr. Crygor, are like an extension of their own bodies. They strike at incredible speed with devastating attacks. By the way, Kat is the one with pink hair.
|align=left|Telling these twin sisters apart is easy: Kat's hair is pink; Ana's is orange. They both go to Diamond City Kindergarten, love nature, and train as ninjas with the Iga clan. In this game, they deliver an impressive joint cross-slash attack with the gigantic high-tech swords Dr. Crygor made them.

| align=center | Lakitu
|Lakitu & Spinies
| These airborne menaces used to ride their clouds exclusively as Bowser's henchmen. They typically hover just out of Mario's reach and hurl Spinies with irritating precision. More recently, however, they've been known to take on less evil tasks, such as doing camera work for sports events and even helping Mario on his quests.
|align=left|Flying over the battlefield in a cloud, this member of Bowser's forces persistently chases after Mario. He takes a break from throwing Spiny Eggs to do some racing in Mario Kart 7. When summoned, he'll appear as a sprite and toss Spiny Eggs at those fighting below him.
|align=left|One of Bowser's minions. This cloud-riding turtle and general nuisance to Mario made his debut as a playable character in Mario Kart 7. In this game, you can summon a pixellated Lakitu who'll throw Spiny Eggs that will turn into Spinies – beasties with red, spiky shells – when they hit the ground.

|
| align=center | Metroid
|Waluigi
| A parasitic life form that can absorb all types of energy, Metroids have strong resistance to most conventional weaponry. To defeat them, Samus Aran had to freeze them with Ice Beam shots and then blast them with missiles. Mochtroids, which look like Metroids, are weaker, with fewer internal nuclei.
|align=left|A crooked mustache and a long, red nose—Waluigi has "villain" written all over him. He considers himself Luigi's rival. He's cunning and quick. When summoned into battle, he'll rush the nearest fighters and stomp them into the ground—then thwack them with his foot or tennis racket!
|-
|align=left|Long, red nose? Handlebar moustache? Bendy body? Yep, this lanky schemer is Luigi's rival, Waluigi. In this game, he'll dash over to the nearest fighter and stomp on them to bury them in the ground. Then he'll finish them off with a big kick or a whack with his tennis racket. Ouch!
|
| align=center | Mr. Resetti
| Prepare to receive a really long talking-to if you reset this game: the next time you play, Mr. Resetti will be waiting to deliver his best scolding. No matter what your intentions are, pressing the RESET Button will bring you face-to-face with this fervent character. Sometimes the only way to shut him up is to apologize.
|-
|
| align=center | Samurai Goroh
| A rival bounty hunter, Samuarai Goroh has crossed paths with Captain Falcon in many a dark corner of the universe. He also goes head-to-head with Falcon in F-Zero races, so the threads of their fates seem to be deeply intertwined. ==Trivia==
*A concept similar to Assist Trophies was considered for Super Smash Bros. Melee, but the idea was scrapped due to development circumstances.
*In the April 2014 Nintendo Direct focused on Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the Waluigi Assist Trophy is used with the Wario series icon, instead of the Super Mario franchise icon. This is odd, since Waluigi has never appeared in any Wario series games. This was later changed, as seen on his Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy.
*In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the figure in the trophy appears to be occasionally blinking.
*In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, not all Assist Trophies appear in every stage, mostly due to elements of the stage itself. Examples include Alucard not appearing in Wii Fit Studio (due to vampires not having reflections), and the Moon not appearing in Great Bay (due to it appearing in the background).

Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
First appearance Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008)
Latest appearance Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018)
Effect Summons a random Nintendo or third-party character when picked up.
“Assist Trophies allow you to enjoy even more characters who couldn't quite make it as playable fighters. You may even see some that only the most dedicated fans will recognize, so you'll have to look forward to them.”

An Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
The Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Ultimate.

List of Assist Trophy characters[edit]

This section only lists Assist Trophy characters representing the Super Mario franchise. A complete list can be found over on this page.

Shaded cells indicate the Assist Trophy can be defeated.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]

Image Name American English Description British English Description
Ashley trophy from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Ashley This young witch-in-training lives in a haunted mansion in Diamond City. She's shy and quick to anger, but secretly she wants more friends. When she appears on the battlefield, she will summon a damaging zone of darkness around her. The zone causes a variety of effects, none of them good. Who's the girl next door living in the haunted mansion? You'd better learn her name, 'cause she's Aa-ashley! This little witch loves cursing people, but also wants more friends. Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it, too... In battle, she conjures a zone of darkness that both damages and shrinks other fighters!
Chain Chomp's trophy render from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Chain Chomp This beast frequently appears in the Super Mario series, and it is definitely equal parts bark and bite. No surprise it's often chained to something. In Smash Bros., it's connected to a stump in the ground and will lash out at anyone who gets close. Don't even bother trying to teach it manners. An iron ball with a face, complete with shiny white teeth, that shows up fairly often in the Mario series. They're impossible to tame, so they're almost always chained to a post, and this game's no exception. Seriously, don't go anywhere near them unless you want to end up a Chomp's dinner.
Hammer Bro.'s trophy render from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Hammer Bro These elite trooper turtles usually appeared in pairs in Super Mario Bros., wearing helmets and chucking hammers at Mario. When summoned, they'll advance on the nearest opponent and lob hammers in a graceful arc. Sometimes they'll throw in a jump to mix things up. Hammer Bros. usually appear in pairs in Super Mario Bros. games. With helmets on heads and hammers in hand, Bowser's elite troops never leg it when Mario shows up. In this game, they appear solo, flinging hammers at the nearest target. They can also jump and throw, so stay sharp!
Kat & Ana trophy from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Kat & Ana These ninja twin sisters of the Iga Clan attend Diamond City Kindergarten. The high-tech katanas they carry, made by Dr. Crygor, are like an extension of their own bodies. They strike at incredible speed with devastating attacks. By the way, Kat is the one with pink hair. Telling these twin sisters apart is easy: Kat's hair is pink; Ana's is orange. They both go to Diamond City Kindergarten, love nature, and train as ninjas with the Iga clan. In this game, they deliver an impressive joint cross-slash attack with the gigantic high-tech swords Dr. Crygor made them.
Lakitu & Spinies's trophy render from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Lakitu & Spinies Flying over the battlefield in a cloud, this member of Bowser's forces persistently chases after Mario. He takes a break from throwing Spiny Eggs to do some racing in Mario Kart 7. When summoned, he'll appear as a sprite and toss Spiny Eggs at those fighting below him. One of Bowser's minions.
Waluigi's trophy render from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Waluigi A crooked mustache and a long, red nose—Waluigi has "villain" written all over him. He considers himself Luigi's rival. He's cunning and quick. When summoned into battle, he'll rush the nearest fighters and stomp them into the ground—then thwack them with his foot or tennis racket! Long, red nose? Handlebar moustache? Bendy body? Yep, this lanky schemer is Luigi's rival, Waluigi. In this game, he'll dash over to the nearest fighter and stomp on them to bury them in the ground. Then he'll finish them off with a big kick or a whack with his tennis racket. Ouch!

Trivia[edit]

 • A concept similar to Assist Trophies was considered for Super Smash Bros. Melee, but the idea was scrapped due to development circumstances.[1]
 • In the April 2014 Nintendo Direct focused on Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the Waluigi Assist Trophy is used with the Wario series icon, instead of the Super Mario franchise icon. This is odd, since Waluigi has never appeared in any Wario series games. This was later changed, as seen on his Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS trophy.
 • In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the figure in the trophy appears to be occasionally blinking.
 • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, not all Assist Trophies appear in every stage, mostly due to elements of the stage itself. Examples include Alucard not appearing in Wii Fit Studio (due to vampires not having reflections), and the Moon not appearing in Great Bay (due to it appearing in the background).
