The United States of America in the Super Mario franchise is a country on Earth, located on the continent of North America. It is often called United States or America for short. Most of the characters and locations from the Super Mario iteration of the country exist also in real life.
History[edit]
Saturday Supercade[edit]
The United States of America makes its first appearance in the first episode of Saturday Supercade. The episode takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana as evidenced by a large sign reading "Welcome to New Orleans." Other features of Louisiana are also included, such as the Mississippi River and large swamps. In the episode "Trucknapper Caper", Donkey Kong Jr. and Bones travel to the state of Texas on their motorcycle. In the episode "Rocky Mountain Monkey Business", Donkey Kong Jr. and Bones ride through the Rocky Mountains, a large mountain range in the western United States.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show![edit]
All of the live-action segments of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! are set in Brooklyn, New York at the Mario Bros.' business Mario Brothers Plumbing. Further, the show's opening sequence shows Mario and Luigi in Brooklyn getting sucked down a drain pipe into the Mushroom Kingdom.
In addition to the live-action segments and the intro, a few of the animated episodes also take place in the United States. In the episode "Plummers Academy," there is an extended flashback of Mario and Luigi at the Brooklyn Plumbers Academy in Brooklyn. In the episode "Flatbush Koopa," King Koopa attempts to take over New York City and rename it "New Koopa," with most of the episode taking place in Brooklyn and Coney Island. In addition, in the episode "Koopa Klaus," Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool attempt to vacation to a place known as Hawaii Land, but they accidentally end up at the North Pole instead.
Several locations in the United States are mentioned in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! In the episode "Marianne and Luigeena," Luigi mentioned the U.S. state of Alaska. Luigi mentions The Bronx, a borough of New York City, in the live-action segments "Day of the Orphan" and "Rowdy Roddy's Rotten Pipes." In "Mario and the Beanstalk," Luigi mentions the Brooklyn Public Library, and in "Wild Thing," Mario and Luigi each have a borrowed book from the library, and Marilyn references her Uncle Tony in the state of California. In "The Great Hereafter," it is revealed that Grandma Mario was buried in Newark, New Jersey. In "Glasnuts," Mario and Luigi try to convice Mikhail Gorbachev into going to Yankee Stadium to try an all-American hot dog. Yonkers, New York is referenced in the title of "Bonkers From Yonkers."
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Several episodes of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 take place within the United States of America. Hollywood, California is featured in the episode "Dadzilla." Miami, Florida and the Kennedy Space Center appear in the episode "Life's Ruff." The state of Kansas appears in the episode "Mush-Rumors," which also mentions the city of Wichita and the states of Iowa and Nebraska. The state of Hawaii is featured in the episode "Reign Storm." The capital of the United States, Washington, D.C., is featured in the episode "Reptiles in the Rose Garden." Finally, New York City is featured in "Kootie Pie Rocks," and Brooklyn specifically is featured in "Recycled Koopa," "Toddler Terrors of Time Travel," and "Misadventures in Babysitting."
Several locations in the United States are mentioned in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. In the episode "Recycled Koopa," King Koopa announces he will soon conquer the New York City boroughs the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens.
Club Nintendo[edit]
New York City, Washington, D.C., and the state of Hawaii appear in several comics in the German Club Nintendo series.
"Super Mario: Verloren in der Zeit"[edit]
In "Super Mario: Verloren in der Zeit," Vikings Erik, Baleog and Olaf are teleported to New York while Mario is also teleported to the Viking Age. the Vikings' presence in the city causes enormous chaos until some New York policemen finally arrest them.
"Mario in Mariozilla"[edit]
New York City is featured once again in "Mario in Mariozilla." Kamek casts a spell onto Mario, which causes him to grow to an enormous size. Mario searches for advice from Dr. Light, who lives in the Empire State Building, and accidentally crashes into some buildings and skyscrapers. When he finally reaches Dr. Light's home, Mario climbs up the Empire State Building in order to talk to the doctor.
"Donkey Kong in: Banana Day 24"[edit]
In "Donkey Kong in: Banana Day 24," Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, and Kiddy Kong travel to Washington, D.C. in order to talk to the President of the United States. The President then provides the Kongs with a space shuttle from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
"Super Mario in Aloha Hawaii"[edit]
In "Super Mario in Aloha Hawaii", Mario is swimming in his kiddie-pool in New York until Bottles from the Banjo-Kazooie series digs a hole through the Earth and takes Mario to Hawaii.
Nintendo Adventure Books[edit]
In the second title of the Nintendo Adventure Books series, Leaping Lizards, it is stated that Luigi once saved Topeka, Kansas from a flood caused by a clog, but Mario later lies to Princess Toadstool and states that he was the one who fixed the clog. In Dinosaur Dilemma, Mario mentions Hawaii after finding 300 coins, stating that he now has enough coins to "take a whole herd of cattle on a vacation to Hawaii."
NES Open Tournament Golf[edit]
The United States of America is one of the three levels that are playable in NES Open Tournament Golf, the other two being Japan and the United Kingdom. In addition, Mario and Luigi's outfits in the game are based on the American flag.
Mario is Missing![edit]
In the PC, SNES, and NES versions of Mario is Missing!, Luigi visits two cities in the United States on his quest to rescue Mario. San Francisco, California and New York City are visited in all three versions of the game.
In addition to the cities that Luigi can travel to, there are numerous cities in the United States that are visible on the Globulator that are not able to be traveled to. The cities included vary depending on the version of the game

Super Mario Bros. film[edit]
In the Super Mario Bros. movie, Mario and Luigi live in Brooklyn, New York where they run Mario Bros. Plumbing. Most of the film takes place in Dinohattan, an alternate-universe version of New York City.
Mario briefly references the Bronx when walking through Dinohattan for the first time in the live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, where he replies to Luigi's speculation that they ended up in a coma and woke up in Brooklyn of the future that they may have even arrived at "the Bronx of today" in regards to the dystopic locale.
Mario's Time Machine[edit]
Mario travels to several locations in the United States in the PC, SNES, and NES versions of Mario's Time Machine. Like the cities on the Globulator in Mario is Missing!, the cities included are different depending on the version of the game.

Donkey Kong Country television series[edit]
In the episode "Four Weddings and a Coconut" of the Donkey Kong Country television series, Donkey Kong sings a song which lyrics mention the Everglades, subtropical wetlands located in the state of Florida. In one of the lines, Donkey Kong sings, "You promenade as you're dancing through the Everglades. Skip to the beat 'til you can't feel your feet!"
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
The Bronx is mentioned in the Super Smash Bros. series in reference to the Bronx-native Little Mac.
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, one of Mario's alternative costumes is his American flag outfit from NES Open Tournament Golf.
Mario Party 7[edit]
The board Neon Heights in Mario Party 7 is heavily based on several locations throughout the United States. The board is mainly based on Las Vegas, Nevada, but it also contains elements from Hollywood, California, Cape Canaveral, Florida, and New York City. It includes a theater district, a movie set based on the Western United States, a space center, and a baseball diamond. There is also a Mario statue in the center of the board that greatly resembles the Statue of Liberty.
Mario Party DS[edit]
In Mario Party DS, Las Vegas, Nevada is featured as one of the landmarks on the globe that the player battles on in the minigame Globe Gunners.
Mario Kart series[edit]
Toad Harbor in the Flower Cup in Mario Kart 8 and its Nintendo Switch remake Mario Kart 8 Deluxe features several areas inspired by American cities. The steep cable car hill and cable cars scattered throughout the track appear to be inspired by San Francisco, California, and the Princess Peach statue in the harbor is directly based on the Statue of Liberty in New York City.
Mario Kart Tour features two courses that take place in the United States, New York Minute and Los Angeles Laps. New York Minute takes place in New York City. The players race by and through several notable landmarks: Times Square, where the race begins, Broadway, Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building, St. Patrick's Cathedral, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the Statue of Liberty, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Some of game's key art also features the Statue of Liberty and Times Square in the background. Los Angeles Laps takes place in Los Angeles, California. The players race by and through several notable Los Angeles and Los Angeles County landmarks: 777 Tower, Beverly Hills City Hall, Capitol Records Building, Dodger Stadium, Inglewood Oil Field, Los Angeles City Hall, Los Angeles Convention Center, Muscle Beach, Rodeo Drive Walk of Style, Santa Monica Pier, Tongva Park, Venice Beach and the Venice Beach Skatepark, Griffith Observatory, Getty Center, and the Westin Bonaventure Hotel.
Tour New York Minute and Tour Los Angeles Laps both return in the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Super Mario Odyssey features the American flag cap and outfit from NES Open Tournament Golf as wearable clothing, titled "Golf Cap" and "Golf Outfit" respectively. It can be purchased using regional coins in the Metro Kingdom, itself heavily based on New York City.
New Donk City in the Metro Kingdom is directly based on New York City. The city features several buildings that are inspired by real-world locations. The explorable area of the city has New Donk City Hall, which is based on the Empire State Building, and a triangular building based on the Flatiron Building. In addition, The kingdom's background contains structures almost identical to the Chrysler Building and the Brooklyn Bridge.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario and Luigi initially live with their family in Brooklyn, where they run Super Mario Bros. Plumbing. The final battle against Bowser at the end of the film takes place in Brooklyn.
Mario and Luigi operate Super Mario Bros. Plumbing in Queens and Brooklyn, as revealed in the business's commercial and website. Additionally, one of the website's testimonials comes from a customer with the username "princessofQueens".
During the brothers' Super Mario Bros. Plumbing commercial towards the beginning of the film, the Manhattan skyline appears on a green screen with Mario and Luigi wearing capes and "flying" in the foreground. Additionally, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, Long Island, and a sliver of New Jersey can be seen on a map that Mario flicks a toy van across.
