'''Funky's Fishing''', also known as '''Funky Fishing''' in the Game Boy Color version, is a mini-game hosted by [[Funky Kong]] in both the [[Game Boy Color]] and [[Game Boy Advance]] remakes of ''[[Donkey Kong Country]]''.
'''Funky's Fishing''', originally titled '''Funky Fishing''',<ref>{{cite|author=DeathKontrol|language=en|url=youtu.be/m3R-NFfGw_s?feature=shared&t=1|timestamp=0:01|title=DKC GBC - Funky Fishing (LV 8) in 9:44 <nowiki>[WR]</nowiki>|publisher=YouTube|date=January 8, 2024|accessdate=November 3, 2024}}</ref> is a mini-game hosted by [[Funky Kong]] in both [[reissue|remakes]] of ''[[Donkey Kong Country]]''. In the [[Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Color)|first remake]], Funky Fishing is selectable from the Bonus menu, but in the [[Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Advance)|second remake]], it is part of both the Extras menu and the main game.

Funky also rewards a photograph of himself if a [[crab]] is reeled in from the ocean floor.

In the Game Boy Color release, Funky Fishing is an extra mini-game accessible from the "Bonus" menu of the selection screen. Despite its title, Funky is never seen or associated with Funky Fishing.

In this minigame, [[Donkey Kong]] sits on [[Enguarde the Swordfish|Enguarde]] and fishes off the coast of [[Donkey Kong Island]]. DK's objective is to reel out [[Bitesize]]s and [[Croctopus]]es and then throw them into a wooden rowboat with his fishing rod to gain points. DK advances to the next level when he surpasses a certain amount of points. Each level becomes progressively more difficult.

[[Donkey Kong|DK]], while sitting on [[Enguarde]], has to reel [[Bitesize]]s and [[Croctopus]]es into a rowboat and get the most points before time runs out. In multiplayer, each player competes to achieve the highest score. The next difficulty level begins once a certain number of points have been achieved. The timer can be refilled slightly by reeling in two or more Croctopus or two or more identically colored Bitesizes (either red, blue, green, yellow, or the usual traditional color). More time refills depending on how many have been caught. There is "KOMBO" meter; one of the letters highlights red, in order, if DK reels in enough identically colored Bitesizes only, and it is possible to highlight more than one letter if enough Bitesizes are caught at once. When every letter of "KOMBO" is highlighted, DK replenishes a lot of the timer, sometimes all of it, and obtains numerous points. Black cans and green bottles start to drift underwater by the third level, and if either is fished in, a portion of the timer is taken away. More trash fills the ocean as the level difficulty increases.

Funky's Fishing also features a timer. The minigame ends when it runs out. DK replenishes it by reeling in two or more Croctopus or two or more identically colored Bitesizes (either red, blue, green, yellow or its traditional color). He can also reel every one of them in at once. DK replenishes very little of the timer from reeling in individual Croctopus or Bitesizes. The more underwater foes he simultaneously reels in, the more of the timer he regains.
If the player gets enough points, they can enter their initials on the hi-score dashboard. The default top five results each have a score that can be associated with a [[Kong]], from their three-letter initials:

The minigame also features a "KOMBO" meter; one of the letters highlights red if DK reels in enough identical Croctopus and Bitesizes. The letters highlight in order. More than one letter highlights if DK captures numerous underwater foes at a time. When every letter of "KOMBO" is highlighted, DK replenishes a lot of the timer, sometimes all of it, and obtains numerous points.

Black and green bottles start to drift underwater by the third level. If DK fishes in these bottles, the minigame timer depletes. More bottles fill the ocean as the level difficulty increases.

[[File:Funkyfishing.png|thumb|The mini-game being played from the "Extras" menu]]
In Extras, the gameplay is similar to the previous version, since the Kongs have to reel in as many underwater enemies as possible before time runs out, and two-player mode involves each player competing for the high score. Besides Bitesizes returning in all five color varieties as well as Croctopuses, other foes include [[Chomps]], [[Chomps Jr.]], and [[Squidge]]s. Certain Bitesizes rapidly flashes between the four colors unique to the fishing game, which can make a kombo with any color. Both Kongs are involved, unlike the previous version: [[Donkey Kong]] or [[Diddy Kong]] sits on Enguarde while the other sits in the boat. Using the D-Pad, the player can lower and raise the hook and reel in what they have caught. By hauling in more than two fish at once, a "Kombo" bonus is added in addition to extra time and bonus points, the amount of which depends on how big the combo was. The timer can be refilled by capturing either two or more identically colored Bitesizes or two or more of the same underwater enemy. The level increases when a certain number of points are achieved. A crab appears occasionally and gives several points when caught, usually resulting in the difficulty level increasing, though crabs cannot provide kombos. On red, blue, and flashing Bitesizes appear at first, with the possible crab, and as the level increases, green, yellow, and normal Bitesizes appear, along with eventually Squidges. Bottles begin appearing at level 6, marking a point many of the sea creatures disappear other than the starting ones, though they gradually begin appearing again alongside more bottles.

Funky's Fishing is also playable in Multiplayer, where it is essentially no different. Here both players compete to reach the highest score. Unlike Crosshair Cranky, both players play as DK, meaning that the second player does not play as a blue-capped Diddy.
In Adventure, every challenge has a unique objective that must be met before time runs out. In the first challenge, TWENTY RED FISH, the player characters have to catch twenty red [[Bitesize]]s but not anything else.<ref>{{cite|quote='''TWENTY RED FISH''': Right on, man. The default top five scores return. Once again, each has initials to indicate which Kong achieved the record, though every score is different and now display the level when the minigame ended. The points are listed below:
[[File:Funkyfishing.png|thumb|left|The mini-game being played from the "Extras" menu.]]
Funky's Fishing reappeared in the [[Game Boy Advance]] remake. It appears in the Adventure mode and the "Extras" menu, where two mini-games are playable from, the other being [[Candy's Dance Studio]]. In the Adventure mode, the mini-game is hosted at [[Funky's Flights]], which itself was renamed to "Funky's Fishing" from the world map. Funky has a unique challenge in each of the six worlds. Donkey Kong and [[Diddy Kong|Diddy]] have the option to jump into the [[Fishing Barrel]] to play the challenge or fly to another world with the [[Jumbo Barrel]]. Each challenge has its own scenery based on the world it is in.

Unlike the Game Boy Color version, either Kong can ride on Enguarde, based on whoever is the lead Kong, while the other Kong sits in the fishing boat. The lead monkey uses the fishing rod to catch things underwater, depending on what Funky requests. Using the D-Pad, the player can lower and higher the hook, wait for enemy(ies) to pass by, and reel it/them into the boat. There is a time bar which slowly decreases over time. By hauling in more than two fish at a time, a "combo" bonus is added along with extra time and bonus points, depending on how big the combo was. Hauling in something that Funky did not request lowers the time bar.

Funky gives a [[Photograph]] to the Kong for every challenge they complete. The six Photographs collectively take up a [[Scrapbook]] page with a large image of DK and Diddy fishing off Donkey Kong Island's coast. Funky also gives them a Photograph of himself if they successfully reel in a crab that sometimes dashes across the ocean floor.

When Funky's Fishing is selected from the Extras mode, the game randomly selects one of the six background scenery based on the Adventure mode's challenges. The gameplay is similar to the Game Boy Color version's, as the Kongs' goal is to reel in as many underwater enemies before the timer runs out. Other aquatic foes such as [[Chomps]], [[Chomps Jr.]] and [[Squidge]]s are also featured aside Croctopuses and Bitesizes. The controlled Kong can replenish the timer by either capturing two or more identically colored Bitesizes or two or more of the same underwater enemy. The game's level increases when a certain number of points are reached. The underwater creatures are not worth as much. Funky's Fishing is also playable from Multiplayer, where two players compete for the highest score.

If the player gets enough points, they can enter their initials on the hi-score dashboard, which displays the top five results. The scoreboard can also be viewed from the selection menu's "HI-SCORE" option, under "BONUS". Before the player sets a high score, the dashboard shows the top five score, all of which appear from each five Kongs (judging from their initials). Funky appears to have the highest score, while [[Cranky Kong|Cranky]] has the lowest.

Default high scores are also in the "Extras" mode in Game Boy Advance remake. The scoreboard and points are entirely different, and it now displays which level each Kong stopped at. Like last time, the scoreboard only displays the top five results, and the player can enter their initials on the scoreboard if they manage to at least top the fifth highest score. Their high score placement is based on how many points they get. All of the high scores are significantly smaller, as catching fish does not warrant as many points in the Game Boy Advance remake.

Funky's Fishing, originally titled Funky Fishing,[1] is a mini-game hosted by Funky Kong in both remakes of Donkey Kong Country. In the first remake, Funky Fishing is selectable from the Bonus menu, but in the second remake, it is part of both the Extras menu and the main game.

In the second remake, Funky's location has been retitled to Funky's Fishing,[2] and besides offering the same flight service, it also hosts a unique challenge in each of the six worlds: TWENTY RED FISH (Kongo Jungle), CROCTOPUS CULL (Monkey Mines), CHUMP CHOMPS (Vine Valley), SQUIDGEN TIME (Gorilla Glacier), OUT WITH THE TRASH (Kremkroc Industries Inc.), and LET'S GO A KOMBO' IN (Chimp Caverns). The challenge can start by jumping into the Fishing Barrel. Each time a challenge is won the first time, Funky gives a photograph to the Kongs, and all six can be combined to form a photograph of DK and Diddy fishingMedia:DKC Scrapbook Page18.png, off the coast of Donkey Kong Island, where the minigame takes place. Funky also rewards a photograph of himself if a crab is reeled in from the ocean floor.

Gameplay[edit]

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Color)[edit]

Funky Fishing in the Game Boy Color version of Donkey Kong Country.

DK, while sitting on Enguarde, has to reel Bitesizes and Croctopuses into a rowboat and get the most points before time runs out.

If the player gets enough points, they can enter their initials on the hi-score dashboard. The default top five results each have a score that can be associated with a Kong, from their three-letter initials:

  1. 15407750 - FUN

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Advance)[edit]

The Funky's Fishing mini-game from Donkey Kong Country for Game Boy Advance
The mini-game being played from the "Extras" menu

In Extras, the gameplay is similar to the previous version, since the Kongs have to reel in as many underwater enemies as possible before time runs out, and two-player mode involves each player competing for the high score. Besides Bitesizes returning in all five color varieties as well as Croctopuses, other foes include Chomps, Chomps Jr., and Squidges. Certain Bitesizes rapidly flashes between the four colors unique to the fishing game, which can make a kombo with any color. Both Kongs are involved, unlike the previous version: Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong sits on Enguarde while the other sits in the boat.

In Adventure, every challenge has a unique objective that must be met before time runs out. In the first challenge, TWENTY RED FISH, the player characters have to catch twenty red Bitesizes but not anything else.[3] For the second challenge, the player characters have to catch 15 Croctopuses while avoiding the bottles.[4] For the third challenge, CHUMP CHOMPS, the goal is to fish in ten Chomps while avoiding any other fish.[5] In the fourth challenge, SQUIDGEN TIME, the player has to catch at least 50 Squidges before runs out.[6] In the fifth challenge, OUT WITH THE TRASH, the player has to collect at least ten pieces of trash.[7] In the sixth and final challenge, LET'S GO A KOMBO' IN, the player has to catch fish of the same color as they fill the timer gradually.[8]
