Funky's Fishing, originally titled Funky Fishing,[1] is a mini-game hosted by Funky Kong in both remakes of Donkey Kong Country. In the first remake, Funky Fishing is selectable from the Bonus menu, but in the second remake, it is part of both the Extras menu and the main game.

In the second remake, Funky's location has been retitled to Funky's Fishing,[2] and besides offering the same flight service, it also hosts a unique challenge in each of the six worlds: TWENTY RED FISH (Kongo Jungle), CROCTOPUS CULL (Monkey Mines), CHUMP CHOMPS (Vine Valley), SQUIDGEN TIME (Gorilla Glacier), OUT WITH THE TRASH (Kremkroc Industries Inc.), and LET'S GO A KOMBO' IN (Chimp Caverns). The challenge can start by jumping into the Fishing Barrel. Each time a challenge is won the first time, Funky gives a photograph to the Kongs, and all six can be combined to form a photograph of DK and Diddy fishingMedia:DKC Scrapbook Page18.png, off the coast of Donkey Kong Island, where the minigame takes place. Funky also rewards a photograph of himself if a crab is reeled in from the ocean floor.

Gameplay[edit]

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Color)[edit]

Funky Fishing in the Game Boy Color version of Donkey Kong Country.

DK, while sitting on Enguarde, has to reel Bitesizes and Croctopuses into a rowboat and get the most points before time runs out. In multiplayer, each player competes to achieve the highest score. The next difficulty level begins once a certain number of points have been achieved. The timer can be refilled slightly by reeling in two or more Croctopus or two or more identically colored Bitesizes (either red, blue, green, yellow, or the usual traditional color). More time refills depending on how many have been caught. There is "KOMBO" meter; one of the letters highlights red, in order, if DK reels in enough identically colored Bitesizes only, and it is possible to highlight more than one letter if enough Bitesizes are caught at once. When every letter of "KOMBO" is highlighted, DK replenishes a lot of the timer, sometimes all of it, and obtains numerous points. Black cans and green bottles start to drift underwater by the third level, and if either is fished in, a portion of the timer is taken away. More trash fills the ocean as the level difficulty increases.

If the player gets enough points, they can enter their initials on the hi-score dashboard. The default top five results each have a score that can be associated with a Kong, from their three-letter initials:

  1. 15407750 - FUN
  2. 10284770 - D.K
  3. 08121680 - DDY
  4. 03172710 - C♥K
  5. 01221730 - CRA

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Advance)[edit]

In Extras, the gameplay is similar to the previous version, since the Kongs have to reel in as many underwater enemies as possible before time runs out, and two-player mode involves each player competing for the high score. Besides Bitesizes returning in all five color varieties as well as Croctopuses, other foes include Chomps, Chomps Jr., and Squidges. Certain Bitesizes rapidly flashes between the four colors unique to the fishing game, which can make a kombo with any color. Both Kongs are involved, unlike the previous version: Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong sits on Enguarde while the other sits in the boat. Using the D-Pad, the player can lower and raise the hook and reel in what they have caught. By hauling in more than two fish at once, a "Kombo" bonus is added in addition to extra time and bonus points, the amount of which depends on how big the combo was. The timer can be refilled by capturing either two or more identically colored Bitesizes or two or more of the same underwater enemy. The level increases when a certain number of points are achieved. A crab appears occasionally and gives several points when caught, usually resulting in the difficulty level increasing, though crabs cannot provide kombos. On red, blue, and flashing Bitesizes appear at first, with the possible crab, and as the level increases, green, yellow, and normal Bitesizes appear, along with eventually Squidges. Bottles begin appearing at level 6, marking a point many of the sea creatures disappear other than the starting ones, though they gradually begin appearing again alongside more bottles.

In Adventure, every challenge has a unique objective that must be met before time runs out. In the first challenge, TWENTY RED FISH, the player characters have to catch twenty red Bitesizes but not anything else.[3] For the second challenge, the player characters have to catch 15 Croctopuses while avoiding the bottles.[4] For the third challenge, CHUMP CHOMPS, the goal is to fish in ten Chomps while avoiding any other fish.[5] In the fourth challenge, SQUIDGEN TIME, the player has to catch at least 50 Squidges before runs out.[6] In the fifth challenge, OUT WITH THE TRASH, the player has to collect at least ten pieces of trash.[7] In the sixth and final challenge, LET'S GO A KOMBO' IN, the player has to catch fish of the same color as they fill the timer gradually.[8]

The default top five scores return. Once again, each has initials to indicate which Kong achieved the record, though every score is different and now display the level when the minigame ended. The points are listed below:

Points Level Initials Character
0400000 11 DK Donkey Kong
0200000 6 DDY Diddy Kong
0150000 5 CDY Candy Kong
0085000 2 CKY Cranky Kong
0050000 1 FUN Funky Kong
