Silver Coins first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, where they appear in certain spots for as long as a P-Switch is in effect. Silver Coins have the same value as standard Gold Coins and are found usually in clusters. They are colored a light cyan in all versions.

In Super Mario World, pressing a Silver P-Switch turns all enemies into Silver Coins for a limited time. However, Silver Coins work differently from standard coins in this game; if enough are collected, they give extra lives, similar to jumping on numerous enemies in succession. In certain levels, a trick involving hordes of enemies and a Silver P-Switch can be executed to earn dozens of extra lives. This goes in order with collecting Silver coins:

*400 - 1 Silver Coin
*800 - 2 Silver Coins
*1000 - 3 Silver Coins
*2000 - 4 Silver Coins
*4000 - 5 Silver Coins

Silver Coins appear in New Super Mario Bros., having the same role as in Super Mario Bros. 3, as well as the cyan color of the game's remakes. They sometimes appear in a trail behind Invincible Mario in a few levels, like World 7-3 and in a secret area in World 5-3. In subsequent Super Mario games, the Silver Coins are replaced by Blue Coins.

In Diddy Kong Racing, silver coins can be found around certain tracks after beating a world boss and collecting several balloons. They are scattered throughout each track, sometimes hidden in hard to reach spots. Each one must be collected in all stages to complete the game. When taking the challenge, players must grab each coin while racing and win first place. If they manage to do so, they complete the track's challenge. In Diddy Kong Racing's DS Counterpart, Diddy Kong Racing DS, the Silver Coins were relatively unchanged except the absence of the Rare Logo and were no longer part of the story now having to be unlocked after getting at least bronze in the Touch Screen Balloon Popping Challenge.

In the remake, the Silver Coin Challenge has been replaced with Balloon Touch Challenges in Adventure Mode. The Silver Coin Challenges still exist in the single race mode, and are redesigned with a Rare symbol on the sides. They can be purchased from Taj's Wishes Menu. Each track's Silver Coin Challenge must be unlocked by completing its respective Balloon Touch Challenge.

Effect Collecting every one in a Silver Coin Challenge rewards a Golden Balloon.

Silver Coins are coin items in Diddy Kong Racing and its Nintendo DS version.

In the original Nintendo 64 release, every course has a Silver Coin Challenge, where the objective is to collect eight Silver Coins and win in first place. Many of the Silver Coins have a colorful N64 icon designed on the sides and are well hidden or located off-track. The player can only participate in a world's Silver Coin Challenges after winning against the world boss in a race, and every race course has their own minimum requirement of Golden Balloons needed to play the challenges. When the player's racer completes a Silver Coin Challenge, Taj awards them with a Golden Balloon. Completing the Silver Coin Challenge in all four courses of Dino Domain, Snowflake Mountain, Sherbet Island and Dragon Forest engages the player in a rematch against the world's boss to obtain a piece of the Wizpig amulet, and obtaining all four pieces leads up to a race with Wizpig himself. In Future Fun Land, completing the Silver Coin Challenge, plus obtaining all four pieces of the T.T. amulet, engages the player in one more race with Wizpig.
