:To be honest, I wasn't sure if my uploads were approvable because of the drastic increase in file size. I'm glad someone sees my high quality uploads as something good. I could go even higher but my computer is crap and I don't have anything beyond a 1600x900 monitor. The resolution of the captures are really causing Dolphin Emulator to run slow for me (2.5x Native). Even 1x Native can get sluggish at times. If I had more powerful hardware, it wouldn't be such a problem. Oh well. I am at least providing some much needed quality images this Wiki needs for [[Super Mario Galaxy]] (and [[Super Mario Galaxy 2]] too when I get around to playing that through Dolphin :P). :D --[[User:Wildgoosespeeder|Wildgoosespeeder]] ([[User talk:Wildgoosespeeder|talk]]) 23:43, 19 November 2015 (EST)

::The more increase in file-size means better quality the better for the wiki, I say. Well I'm glad someone's going through the trouble of playing a platformer especially on a slower computer to upload high quality screenshots. The games can run frustratingly slow so I understand where you're coming from. Keep up the good work! {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 00:47, 20 November 2015 (EST)
:::Slower frame rates do help getting more precise screenshots though. :P Anyways, it's nice to see my work is going appreciated. It's a nice change of pace hearing positive remarks improving a Wiki. :D The last Wiki I tried to improve just had me being chewed out by moderators. The Wiki's organization and maintenance handling was a mess five years in the making. Tried to propose systems to help it out some to get it back on-track. Lukewarm response. :( This Wiki and Bulbapedia handle better. --[[User:Wildgoosespeeder|Wildgoosespeeder]] ([[User talk:Wildgoosespeeder|talk]]) 04:42, 20 November 2015 (EST)
::::Yeah about that slow emulation speed lol, we've worked with slower frame rates before; we had to work with 1-3 FPS sometimes! The payoff is that the results in button-mashing and reaction minigames in Mario Party are profound, and it one time lead us to discovering [[:File:Leaf Leap.png|an easter egg]]. Anyway, despite what Baby Luigi (my identical twin sister) said, it might actually be ideal if you stick to native resolution, but there's no point going back and changing the resolution of the images. Don't let that discourage you, though, and you ''can'' continue your work as usual. {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 15:23, 20 November 2015 (EST)
:::::The way Dolphin handles screenshots, it's a pain to take things in 640x480 or 853x480 or whatever. The picture ends up being stretched and scaled to whatever size the window is to fit the frame. [https://bugs.dolphin-emu.org/issues/9089 I have brought this up on the Dolphin bug tracker]. The developers say the current screenshot code is a mess and they haven't gotten around to cleaning it up because of the fact. Also if I were to take their suggestion to get around the issue, the program crashes and restarts my display driver, for me at least. Long story short, it's a pain to take screenshots at the 1x native resolution and have the output screenshot be 640x480 or 853x480. It's better for me to do 2.5x native (1600x900). --[[User:Wildgoosespeeder|Wildgoosespeeder]] ([[User talk:Wildgoosespeeder|talk]]) 16:58, 20 November 2015 (EST)
::::::All right, it's okay if you have to upload at bigger-than-normal resolutions, moreso if it's really the only reliable way to get higher-quality screenshots. Just continue what you're doing, and we'll be fine. {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 19:40, 20 November 2015 (EST)
NICE!! A fellow uploader! Such work is always appreciated. If uploading images is your main interest. I can link you to a page with countless amount of low quality images. Not necessarily Wii games but all existing Mario games!--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 06:48, 20 November 2015 (EST)
:It's probably best to automate inserting <code><nowiki>{{image-quality}}</nowiki></code> for JPEGs if the tag doesn't exist. Some JPEGs can't be replaced, such as alpha/beta screenshots, pre-release images, and other media that can't be replicated. PNGs are a different story as they require manual investigation if the image is good or not. I have flagged a few already. I don't consider myself a regular uploader. Too much work. Also my Mario game library is quite limited. I happen to be interested in Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 being played in Dolphin Emulator and looking into Super Mario Wiki seeing a lot of low quality imagery. :P --[[User:Wildgoosespeeder|Wildgoosespeeder]] ([[User talk:Wildgoosespeeder|talk]]) 19:52, 20 November 2015 (EST)
::I'd reserve them for super-low quality and/or out-of-proportion images, but I suppose you can catalog them in your user page so we can find all the images in a neat little spot without sharing room with horrendous-quality images. {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 20:30, 20 November 2015 (EST)

Just a small request, but can you re-position the Purple Toad in [[:File:Pinktoadb.png|this screenshot]] so the flowers don't clip through his feet? I figured that the image may be more useful for cropping in the future (we have a lot of cropped images here too). Thanks! {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 20:30, 20 November 2015 (EST)
:I don't think it is possible. It seems like the [[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'s [[Mailtoad]] is bound to the ring of flowers. :( --[[User:Wildgoosespeeder|Wildgoosespeeder]] ([[User talk:Wildgoosespeeder|talk]]) 17:41, 22 November 2015 (EST)

Hello, good job the high resolution image uploads. However, since the previous [[:File:Cosmic Blooper.PNG]] has the complete area (unless you can upload better version), it's preferable to use that one.
{{User:L151/sig}}
:I had a feeling someone would have a problem with it but I am not sure how to best capture all of it. I couldn't find a good angle to do so. The suggested angle seems to be during the intro before Mario flies in (it has black bars) and then the image was edited. I don't like editing screenshots relating to casual play, the original format the images were captured in as I was replacing them. Also I was trying to match articles like [[Dusty Dune Galaxy]] and [[Sea Slide Galaxy]], previous articles I worked on to replace the images. --[[User:Wildgoosespeeder|Wildgoosespeeder]] ([[User talk:Wildgoosespeeder|talk]]) 23:09, 22 November 2015 (EST)
::I just need to point out that both are good; one shows the entire planet, the other shows the relative scale between Mario and the planet, and it shows gameplay footage. I think the free look option in Dolphin can be used to zoom yourself out so you can see both Mario and the planet, and it's just illustrative purposes, so it's not necessarily cheating or modding the game to give wrong impressions. The pesky HUD might be there, though, I don't know... {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 16:25, 23 November 2015 (EST)

== Re:Uploads are JPEG to PNG ==

I went offline before deleting the [[:File:SMG Starshroom & Kingfin Planet.png|file]], so that done. You can upload another image of the battle to replace on the [[Kingfin|page]]. About unused file, some users upload and forgets to add them into pages, some replace but didn't tag for deletion.
Hi, my uploads of Paper Mario artwork were PNG to begin with. I got them from the source in the upload description if you want proof, they were already PNG. The only exception is Kooper, because I found the existing JPG artwork looked better and was slightly bigger so my bad on that one. --{{User:Fawfulfan64/sig}} 16:09, 1 December 2017 (EST)
As the description said, '''All files should be used in at least one page. Some are lying around waiting to be tagged with <nowiki>{{delete}}</nowiki> as well.'''
:OK that makes sense. What about the ones that are bigger than what's already here though, like most partner and boss art? Also, in regards to the JPG to PNG thing, I've had this thought for a while but I'm not sure if it's been answered, what's wrong with uploading them as PNGs when that makes the process of uploading actual high quality PNGs when they are found easier, since you can just update the existing file instead of uploading a new one? --{{User:Fawfulfan64/sig}} 16:26, 1 December 2017 (EST)
Can I re-add the artworks that are at least more desirable than the current tiny/small ones? (Peach distress, Goomba King, Kammy etc that obviously weren't copied from the wiki to begin with) --{{User:Fawfulthegreat64/sig}} 12:03, 5 December 2017 (EST)

:Well yes, but i figure there should another screenshot of the battle fight and conclusion, if you're fine with that.

Hey. Just to let you know, when someone's done a spate of edits you can actually undo them. Just click onto the page history, go to the last "good" revision, click edit, and then save. It's basically the rollbacking ability we have, just more steps. {{User|Yoshi876}}
Hello! I just wanted to say you're doing a great work with all your uploads, thanks! --{{User:Tucayo/sig}} 18:52, 22 December 2015 (EST)
:That sounds like you're just clicking the undo button, what you need to do is click on the timecode for that edit. == Thanks ==

The images I find are usually in .jpg format, so I figure that saving them as .png makes less sense. I don't have access to a computer strong enough to handle Dolphin Emulation, so I am unfortunately unable to make such high quality screenshots. If saving .jpgs as .pngs is more preferable anyways, then I will change my behaviour immediately. {{User:RandomYoshi/sig}} 19:25, 22 December 2015 (EST)
Hey, just want to say thanks for helping out with my screenshot qualities. I may have a way of getting higher quality screenshots for NES, SNES, GB, GBC, and GBA through my father's Retron system, but the setup for doing so is rather...convoluted and may not happen any time soon. So, until I'm able to meet policy on my own, thanks for the help. :) {{User:Alex95/sig}} 22:43, 20 December 2017 (EST)
:Thanks a lot! This is going to speed up things considerably. {{User:RandomYoshi/sig}} 19:48, 22 December 2015 (EST)
:Despite possible Retron mistakes, the image quality would be much better than my capture card can produce. The issue is it saves to an SD card, which my computer does not have a slot for. My dad's computer does, though, so maybe I can work things out with him sometime.
:The program I am currently using is called Debut Video Capture Software made by the NCH Software company, with my capture card being an AV to USB, if that helps. Not sure which one is the real issue when it comes to quality, or if it's both, but it's easily accessible and my computer can (barely) run it.
:While I have no other way of capturing N64, GCN, or Wii footage and screenshots (and I can upload from the Wii U directly), I can use my father's Retron for the NES, SNES, GB, GBC, and GBA screenshots, which the Retron automatically takes at pixel-perfect size, so I'll see what I can do with that when I need to. DS and 3DS is a nope though :P {{User:Alex95/sig}} 11:31, 21 December 2017 (EST)

== Re: JPEG Woes ==
They're from the Retron I mentioned above. Takes snapshots in the correct size, but sadly, there's no way to change the output file format :( {{User:Alex95/sig}} 21:02, 16 March 2018 (EDT)
:Oh, I guess I've just been saying "Retron" rather than "Retron 5" :P It can play NES, SNES, Famicom, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. {{User:Alex95/sig}} 11:14, 17 March 2018 (EDT)

Thanks! I've been having trouble with JPEGs lately; I'll take your advice and make them PNGs in the future if it doesn't cooperate. --[[User:Andymii|Andymii]] ([[User talk:Andymii|talk]]) 20:41, 26 December 2015 (EST)
==Hey==
Hey thanks! I'm going to be very busy today, as it is Christmas, but I'll look into those softwares you suggested to upload the rest of the pictures. Thanks and, by the way, happy holidays, too! {{User:DKPetey99/sig}}

== Transparency ==

I would reccomend not adding transparency onto the health bar image as the after effects could look unprofessional and is mostly unnecessary. Great with the uploads though.{{user|NSY}}
it's apparently out and I think it's the only emulator that can support local multiplayer. Maybe update your screenshot page? {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 18:59, 25 December 2017 (EST)
:Why can't' you just dump the textures on Dolphin Emulator and piece them together instead? {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 19:36, 27 December 2015 (EST)
:well what about using it to take local multiplayer screenshots? is there any other emulator that can do that? {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 22:44, 25 December 2017 (EST)
::That might work if you can pull it off actually. Wouldn't recommend using magic wand transparency though. {{user|NSY}}
:::I don't have the proper tools to make it happen nor do I know how to wield them properly. I just capture things in the final render. ::::Dumping textures come with official transparency; there won't be any need to use magic wand transparency. Besides, you can use feathering to make a transparency less blocky so it's not always a bad thing. BTW, you use Dolpin emulator, correct? {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 19:44, 27 December 2015 (EST)
:::::I know how to enable the feature in the graphics settings. I'm moreso just supplying replacement game screenshots. That is what I am uploading. --[[User:Wildgoosespeeder|Wildgoosespeeder]] ([[User talk:Wildgoosespeeder|talk]]) 19:47, 27 December 2015 (EST)

==Your use of image quality tags==
== Is it Okay if I Upload Images taken from my Phone? ==
I think you're a tad too liberal throwing it around to any picture that's a little less than ideal quality. Typically, the tag is saved for images that have horrible anti-aliasing, taken with a potato quality camera, or whatever, but some images you've put an image-quality tag on are acceptable quality, even though they're simply JPGs. Like, I think [[:File:108615-1.jpg|this image]] and [[:File:Spm chaos-heart.jpg|this image]] do their jobs even if they're not perfect quality. Yes, lacking a tag doesn't mean that it can't be better, but the image quality tag is usually saved for noticeably bad images, just like how we don't tag rewrite on articles unless their quality is noticeably and jarringly bad. Don't take this as a discouragement to your contributions, I'm personally just stating my own thoughts. {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 20:05, 27 December 2015 (EST)

I asked the same Question and someone told me to ask you this question. Ever since Miiverse has shut down, I've lost my work into trying to put in images I post on Miiverse, so I decide on Uploading images taken from my iPhone which was my only way around it (I own an iPhone 4, so the quality shouldn't be too bad). The sample I have is for Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64. I understand if you do not accept, I just really want to help out articles that are in the need for images. [[User:Jigglypuff|Jigglypuff]] ([[User talk:Jigglypuff|talk]]) 11:42, 29 December 2017 (EST)
::Again, I'll probably bring it up on the forums regarding usage of the templates. But we probably don't need to break it up; a bad image is a bad image and the reasons parameter is already good enough to cover all cases an image can be a bad image. {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 20:51, 27 December 2015 (EST)

To take screenshots, I put the games on full-screen and use the print screen function. I then paste them in Photoshop and save them for web as JPEG. I don't think it's possible to take screenshots directly from the SWF file, unless I download and use third-party software which I don't want to do. -- {{User:Super Radio/Sig}} 18:07, 31 December 2017 (EST)
:I think I understand what you are talking about, but I do not have the Flash files (.fla) so that I could access the contents of these games. Only the Adobe Player files (.swf) that run them can be downloaded from the net. Or do you mean there are other official Flash players out there which allow me to take screenshots? I can't find them... -- {{User:Super Radio/Sig}} 06:56, 2 January 2018 (EST)
::I'm honestly out of the loop with this. Have merely downloaded and installed a new version of the Flash Player. Now, how do I effortlessly take screenshots on a .swf file? == GIF vs. JPEG. vs. PNG ==
== This Image ==

:I am tagging images like File:Ss lozalttf.gif for a reason. PNG is better because it has a lot of advantages over GIF or JPEG. PNGs can be compressed quite a bit more.
Hey. Can you please reupload [[:File:DKKOSRedHandlePeg.png|this image]] for me so it's not all messed up and the entire item is shown? If you need the original picture it's from page 8 of [https://media.nintendo.com/nintendo/bin/iTWgYiJG7AsuXOWvVPBioZ8XcHmIAQGa/y8FarK92oe0SB31kUAkBlJA1yK5E2Z2r.pdf|this]. Thanks. {{User:DKPetey99/sig}}
Doubly irrelevant in this case - firstly, you're talking bytes, not even kilobytes. And secondly, by uploading a new image, you're doubling the amount of space taken up on the server. (Even "deleted" images aren't actually removed by default. They're recycle-binned for potential undeletion.)

:They also allow for 24-bit true color (16,777,216-color) rather than 256-color.
== Mario is Missing! images ==
Irrelevant in the case of NES/SNES/Game Boy/GBC images. (And once you get beyond flat-colour images, PNG filesize REALLY balloons rapidly, since the compression algorithms don't work particularly well with rapid variations, like photos or more complex screenshots)

:I have noticed that the 256 color pallet is insufficient with some SNES images (colors are a bit off).
Hello, could you upload an image of each cities from the [[Mario_is_Missing!#MS-DOS|MS-DOS version]] (especially the red links)?
That's an artefact of the program used to save it rather than the format, and would be the case with an 8-bit PNG too. No SNES image is more than 8-bit colour provided you use a properly-set colourmap. (This is not the same thing as the SNES only being capable of producing 256 ''total'' colours. It just couldn't do more than 256 ''simultaneously''. The Game Boy Color had a similar, but even more severe limitation of something like 60 simultaneous colours, IIRC.). - [[User:Reboot|Reboot]] ([[User talk:Reboot|talk]]) 19:39, 3 January 2016 (EST)
{{User:L151/sig}}

:I am well aware that MediaWiki treats deletion more like an OS recycle bin than resetting the bytes that made up the image. The deletion I see here typically will at least prevent bandwidth consumption of the inferior image.
== Image Quality ==
...but the image itself (9.78kb) is rarely going to be served. It's used on one page and in two categories. The page serves a 180px thumbnail - which is '''18.8kb''' - (by default, you can adjust that in your settings). The categories serve 120px thumbnails (8.77kb). All of which are rescaled (and cached) by the server. That's going to happen *whatever* image you upload.

And, indeed, I notice you've resaved it as a PNG while I've been typing. And, sure, the file is smaller (I'm going to check the accuracy in a minute...), but you know the filesize of the thumbnail being served on  [[List of Mario references in video games]] now? 32.27 kB! Holy pyrrhic victory, Batman! (The category image is ALSO bigger at 15.5kB)
Hey would you mind reuploading [[:File:Rainbow Tourney.png|this]] to improve the quality? {{User:DKPetey99/sig}}
:Hey you see for the original upload of [[:File:Rainbow Tourney.png|this picture]] how it has a Rainbow Tourney logo on the bottom? Is it possible that you can reupload that specific picture so the Rainbow Tourney logo is there like it is in the original? {{User:DKPetey99/sig}}
::Oh, shoot. Ok. {{User:DKPetey99/sig}}

:There are more ultimate ways of deletion if server space is getting tight, like this. I have brought the server space issue to Henry Tucayo Clay (Talk) when I was accidentally tagging images that I have replaced that were being used by main articles and 'Shroom issues. He isn't that concerned that the storage limit has been reached or is close to being reached.
== RE: Concept Art Category ==
So why are you?

:I don't know the intricate details of an SNES but what I do know is that we should supply images that have the least amount of impact on bandwidth consumption and storage space. For the screenshot you untagged, there are two issues: The image isn't 254x224 (NTSC) and it can be compressed further than the GIF can if it were in PNG format (PNG Monster works great for me).
Branching it out makes it more convenient for viewers. I can understand wanting to keep them all in one place, but if a user were to look for some concept art, a separate category would save them the trouble of having to sift through hundreds of pre-release/unused content images. {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 03:29, 18 January 2018 (EST)

So what you've done is replace it with a resave of the image which in both server space and bandwidth takes up MORE space in practice, even before you consider the fact that the "prior" image still exists and will continue to exist on the server even if "deleted", and which is no more accurate since you've, again, literally resaved the same image.
:I wouldn't be opposed to splitting the pre-release and unused content images, and if there are any overlaps as you mentioned (pre-release content found unused in the game), both categories can be included on the file page; if there are too many overlaps, though, then it's probably not worth splitting them. Considering we have [[:Category:Fair use art]] and not "Fair use art images" (which seems a bit redundant), I don't think renaming [[:Category:Concept art]] is really necessary. {{User:Mario jc/sig}} 07:22, 19 January 2018 (EST)

I wanted to ask if you could get close up shots of Rock Mario and Luigi (not rolling, but facing the camera), as the Rock Mario article doesn't have pictures of that. Thanks! --[[User:Zootalo|Zootalo]] ([[User talk:Zootalo|talk]]) 17:09, 6 January 2016 (EST)
I noticed you posted an image quality template on the [[Gallery:New Super Mario Bros.|New Super Mario Bros gallery]], mentioning to use a certain editor to rip the spirtes. I've been messing around with it, but can't seem to find a way to do so. On top of that, I'm fairly certain some of the existing sprites, such as [[:File:BlueKoopaTroopaNSMB.png]] are already at their best quality.--{{User:Eldritchdraaks/sig}} 16:29, 7 February 2018 (EST)

I will stop. I had been doing this only because a 'crat agreed with me on the General Discussions topic. As the wiki we probably need more discussion about this. {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 00:40, 9 January 2016 (EST)
:Don't worry about it too much mate, disagreements and problems will happen, as editors are expected to deal with them. However, disagreements foster critical thinking and helps us improve how we handle things. I can very may as well say that how we run is mostly based upon debate, critical thinking, and disagreements, and anyone playing devil's advocate is being intellectual. You might want to discuss it further with us before you create a proposal though, since I already know around three people who disagree with what you want, but Tucayo seems to be enthusiastic about your idea. We'll generate more discussion about this and we'll wait and see. {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 00:50, 9 January 2016 (EST)

It's sure mine (my sister ({{User|Baby Luigi}}) also uploads a huge deal of stuff, so she's available when you need her, too. I am, however, focused on some other Wii/GCN games, which includes New Super Mario Bros. Neither Galaxy, however, are on the list, and I'm not sure where it sits in my priority list, but once I figure out how to make the game interesting, but not immediately apparent in photo, while I take pictures (like hacks disabling music), I'll get to it. {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 23:45, 9 January 2016 (EST)

== Regarding the Take Better N64 Snapshots subpage ==
== SMG2 image request ==

Nice, that looks like a nice tutorial. However, it seems that it is a bit too extreme. Sure, sometimes the 320px screenshots looks better than the 640px ones. But I think it's better not to stick to strict rules. You spelled it yourself when you upload over-resolutioned SMG images. It's overall better to go by it case-by-case. If the 640px looks high-quality enough then upload it, otherwise we can stick to the 320px.. Regarding the images used. I'm not sure what the admins are going to decide, but in all cases, you can always upload the images to external sites (like imagur and postimage) and use the direct link to put the images in the wiki... external image-linking is allowed everywhere aside from the mainspace and galleries.--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 16:26, 15 January 2016 (EST)

I'm actually going to do just April because the render shown isn't in this wiki or anywhere else I know of. But much thanks for the higher-res version! I'm actually going to attempt to crop it. {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 01:04, 16 January 2016 (EST)

I removed the backgrounds from the sprites you requested. I refrained in [[:File:Crystal Balls.PNG]] because I couldn't tell if the pink part is supposed to be removed or not. As for those Wario's Woods sprites, the color values for the black seem to blend with the background, so I can't accurately remove the background. I also haven't used PNG monster; maybe I'm a n00b, but the page isn't displaying properly unless I hit "view source". Anyhow, I got it in my computer, but I have to remember using it. :P {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 03:00, 16 January 2016 (EST)

:Yeah, I've said so already. I forgot. But after using and uploading [[:File:MarioMSB.png]] as a guinea pig, I'll remember to compress them. At least, when I'm using this computer. I'm probably going to upload and edit using another computer tomorrow (provided I get that wireless keyboard and mouse working again!), and I'm not supposed to put too much programs in that one; I've already have Paint.NET installed, and I don't wish to install more stuff. But, thanks for that! {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 03:21, 16 January 2016 (EST)
::I've reuploaded the sprite. And from the sprite sheet you provided, the crop was actually poorly done; I could not make out the sparkles in the sprite, and the pinkish area IS supposed to be there. It makes it more confusing that the pink background's palette matches this pink palette so it appears to be the transparent part. Good thing we have a game rip or I would've removed the wrong parts, but even if I didn't do this, the sprite would be incorrect. {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 03:30, 16 January 2016 (EST)

== Images to be deleted ==

When adding a delete template to an image, please add the reasoning for it as well, using the template {{tem|delete}}, as follows <code><nowiki>{{delete|reason}}</nowiki></code>. Remember, being unused is not enough of a reason to delete an image, only delete it if it was replaced, or utterly useless, if it can be implemented in an article, do that instead. Please revise all your past deletion tags--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 05:09, 18 January 2016 (EST)
:I have only seen the ones you have marked with tobedeleted, again, being unused '''is not''' a reason to mark an image for deletion, and if you don't have a reason to delete an image, '''don't''' mark it for deletion. It's common sense. Regarding my old message about screenshot resolution, your response didn't detail ''why'' high resolution screenshots are "bad". You just stated some facts.--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 15:32, 18 January 2016 (EST)
::It is confusing, but the vast majority of users use it when there is a proposal about deleting a page, which seems legit enough. It should only be used when there is a disagreement on whether to keep it or not. Again for the third time, If you don't have any reasons to delete an image, don't mark it. If you have proper reasons, but not absolutely sure, then post a comment in the talk page, and ''then'' tag it with the {{tem|tobedeleted}}, If the image is about an uncovered subject, unused personal-image (you might also want to talk with it's owner, if he is not inactive) and replaced images, then you can safely add the {{tem|delete}}.--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 15:46, 18 January 2016 (EST)
:::...Which is much appreciated really, few of us used to dig it, I would dig it too If I wasn't extremely busy with tests. The tobedeleted template puts the image in the Requested for Deletion category: "[...] there <u>is</u> a discussion on whether they should be deleted or not." If this category was filled with unused images, it would lose it's purpose, besides the people who would care to dig [[:Category:Requested for Deletion|this]], have the same guts to dig [[Special:UnusedFiles|this]].--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 15:59, 18 January 2016 (EST)

== PNG monstar ==

Even though using PNG monstar compresses the images and fasten the loading time, for small sprites it doesn't matter, and if the size difference is too minor (when compressing large images, say 1000 KB compressed to 950 KB), it's also not necessary, because it eats bandwidth space, and the effects are not noticeable, however if you are uploading an image, you can compress it before uploading and that would be appreciated, and if the PNG monstar can compress Huge images with a noticeable difference (say 1000 KB compressed to ~600 KB) then that is also appreciated.--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 06:13, 20 January 2016 (EST)
:I know that much, I'm talking about the fact that it is redundant, no need to actively do it, unless you the difference is noticeable or you are replacing the file anyway--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 18:07, 20 January 2016 (EST)

== Stubs ==

Since you've brought this up on a couple of occasions, I'll explain to you directly that stubs are not necessarily short articles. A stub is simply an article that's lacking information. If an article has all the required information, it's not a stub even if the end result is short. If all of the information is on the wiki, it cannot be a stub unless something new comes out. Please take this into account. {{User:Time Turner/sig}}
:With the plethora of categories, templates, and general links in other articles, it's almost impossible for an article to fall by the wayside. Generally, subjects are split either because they have little connection to their originating article or because more focus and detail can be inserted if the subjects are given individual articles. It's up to the users to decide which articles should be split and which articles should be merged, whether that's through proposals or discussions. {{User:Time Turner/sig}}

==Emulators Guide==
It's a go from the admin team, but these changes need to be made before turning it into an official page: ''There should be two sets of two images, since all four in a row will is way too wide (plus, it'll look better to have the images of the same dimensions separate). Then the overall footer should be turned into body text or even a pair of bullet points above the images, and the header can be ditched. Since there's room for expansion to involve more emulators, then one section per emulator would be best, with the intro just being an overall "use the native resolutions" statement, like we already have on [[MarioWiki:Image Use Policy]].'' The title would also be changed but I'll take care of that. If theses changes are applied I can run this again by the staff. --{{User:Henry Tucayo Clay/sig}} 13:48, 4 February 2016 (EST)

Hey, I get you were trying to test something with transclusion, but [[Template:Test template delete|making a template just for it to be deleted]] is something you shouldn't do. If you need to test transclusion with something, you can use one of your subpages and transclude that, but creating a test template is just unnecessary. {{User:Alex95/sig}} 17:08, 30 March 2018 (EDT)
:Yeah, no, you don't create something just for it to be deleted. That just creates extra work and is, again, unnecessary. You don't need to create a new subpage for testing, just add something to one of your ([https://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=User%3AWildgoosespeeder&fulltext=1 several]) subpages momentarily. Once you've accomplished what you wanted, just remove the code or place it elsewhere. {{User:Alex95/sig}} 17:20, 30 March 2018 (EDT)
::"Modifying my existing userpages was undesirable" Better than making a page marked for deletion from its creation. Record deletion shouldn't be the determining factor here. :I believe 3DS for Homebrew requires an SD card? Is that the same as a flashcard or...? I've tried checking it out, but I have the latest firmware of 3DS, and it's the Old3DS. I do have a copy of Ocarina of Time 3D, so I'd like to try the OOThax exploit by directly writing raw saves to the card (my system has not been exploited before), but I think that requires PowerSaves or a 3DS save dongle, neither of which I have. ::It seems that my cautious stance remains. I've made another big comment, so have a look if you have time. {{User:Bazooka Mario/sig}} 18:18, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

Continuing on your points on the proposal. I'm seeing that it's going to be canceled, so I'm continuing a bit here. I provided your points here just for convenience, especially if we or any other user needs to refer to it for any reason. Also, you're very welcome. :*OK, I guess removal of {{tem|Convert to SVG}} is in order but I am not 100% sure it should be removed.
:*I'm 50:50 with PNG vs. JPEG use for screenshots. JPEG would definitely not be acceptable for screenshots of sprite-based games (such as NES, SNES, GB, GBC, and GBA games as well as some games that don't utilize true 3D of N64, GCN, Wii, Wii U, DS, and 3DS games). Compression for those screenshots would almost always be lower in the PNG format than the JPEG format. PNG is great for solid colors while JPEG is great for images with shading. I just default to PNG almost always because it is a very easy format to work with. My experiences with JPEG, I have to fiddle around with compression settings to not be too high in file size while the image doesn't look like it suffers from JPEG artifacting. It's usually a pain for me to work with JPEGs.
:*I feel that personal lists risk being exclusionary and obscure to regular users. {{user|RAP}}'s project failed mostly from what I heard (only up to 1/10th of the images were replaced over the course of a few years and there are still images in poor quality). Tagging an image that could be better is more up-front about it, increases replacement request exposure, and invites people who don't know about the personal lists to contribute better images to the Wiki because that is how the tag functions by design and implementation. I think I was able to replace more images by the tagging method than the personal list method.
:*Wow. I wished those details were included in each of the template's <nowiki><noinclude></noinclude></nowiki> code. I remember {{user|Henry Tucayo Clay}} proposing something about {{tem|construction}} being used incorrectly (something about articles truly being informal). I could never really fully understand what the proposal was asking because the tag itself had a lot of subjectivity surrounding its use. If the tag's description had what you described to me is its proper use, I'm sure his proposal wouldn't need to have been proposed.
Thanks for all your helpful feedback. You and {{user|Henry Tucayo Clay}} have been the most helpful. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 19:17, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

I also agree on the use of {{tem|image-quality}} tags here. I didn't necessarily say that files like [[:File:3DMARIO.png]] do not need a tag, but that there should be more leeway on deciding whenever pre-release stuff should get a tag or not. But, a potato image is still a potato image, and that's what the 3DMARIO image is, so I have no problems tagging that one.
== 160px ==

That's why prior discussion is important. We can settle on terms and work toward a clearer goal. I always thought this proposal would be a big undertaking, though. It's essentially recategorization and trying to go through ''all'' images in the wiki to tag or to maintain tags.
Why do you keep adding |160px to images which are already 160px wide and so displays as such? - [[User:Reboot|Reboot]] ([[User talk:Reboot|talk]]) 10:18, 9 April 2018 (EDT)

I think it should be removed, to be honest. As Megadardery said, it's an old template that was applied to small sprites that, when placed in galleries, become huge and blurry and otherwise look hideous. The .svg format allows scaling without any loss, so there was a small push for .svg sprites. But, since wiki software was updated to scale these sprites more appropriately, this template is just a relic. Its only use I see is inviting users to convert a .png logo into an .svg when that kind of practice is discouraged. Specifically, the means of converting to .svg itself, which is tracing over the .png. How [http://blogs.adobe.com/adobeillustrator/2013/07/image-trace-in-illustrator-a-tutorial-and-guide.html tracing works] is that Adobe Illustrator sees an image and then calculates where the strokes should be, their width, their color, and others. Since it's not perfect, you get a logo that looks slightly off from the original. It's why those emblems I showed you had to be reuploaded. They're inaccurate and therefore misleading. Just as we don't allow users to recreate [[:File:BJR Super Mario Maker.PNG|sprites]] based on low-quality pre-release video footage (which results in an inaccurately constructed sprite with an inaccurate palette), we don't allow trace versions of .png logos (even if the .png logo highly resembles vector art).

Personal lists may risk being overlooked but it's no good if you don't make any attempt. RAP's project may have gone unnoticed, but the deal isn't done. Not at all. You can revive projects and they may get more attention and even get going again. [[MarioWiki_talk:Proposals#Proposal_Archives|This is exactly what happened with proposal archives]], I brought up the issue, found out that it was actually an old, forgotten issue, reminded the admins (and RAP coincidentally, as it's another one of RAP's forgotten projects!) and we pushed it to make it a thing, and here it is. I hope this is inspiring. And even if it gets little attention, just keep trying and just work hard. I don't think personal lists are that much more hidden than maintenance categories, to be honest. For what I've seen, it's usually the experienced users on gnomework that handles categories and stuff, not "normal" users. Keeping useful information in userspace isn't that "out there".

== hello ==
I've said it before, I'll say it again if need be >.< . The English instruction manual is ''not'' the only source for Rocky Wrench. The various Shogakukan books referred to them ''specifically'' as being within the ''Kame-zoku'', which means not "turtle," but "Turtle ''Tribe''," which is the ''same'' term they use in the JP instruction manual for SMB1 in reference to what the English manual calls "the Koopa." Ergo, they were ''indisputably'' Koopas back then, and saying "nuh-uh they're just turtles saying they're Koopas is fancruft" when ''specific'' evidence is presented to you is just not OK. Aaaaanyways, how can Monty Mole have been the parent species? You said that Rocky was simply "revealed" first. The problem is, this ''hinges'' on the idea that Nintendo had already come up with Monty Moles before development of SMB3, despite there being ''no'' evidence to support this and the fact that Rockies were Koopas then indicating that no, they hadn't come up with them then. ''Furthermore'', Rocky Wrench still has the less specific Japanese name. I really don't see why people don't like this idea. It makes the most sense from a design history perspective. And sorry if this comes off as unnecessarily rude, but I ''despise'' having to explain the same thing seven times. :The only reason I PM'd you is that you seem to have not seen my explaining this multiple times, and I wanted to make sure you actually saw it. The term "Koopa" was initially used as a direct translation of "Kame-Zoku" in the SMB1 instruction manual, and ergo, they are literally synonymous, as "Koopa" was used as a translation for that. So it's not just generic turtles. It's Koopas specifically. [[User:Doc von Schmeltwick|Doc von Schmeltwick]] ([[User talk:Doc von Schmeltwick|talk]]) 02:03, 15 April 2018 (EDT)

When I was uploading a bunch of The Thousand-Year Door screenshots, I felt it would be nice to categorize them, but didn't because I didn't know there was such a need. So I thought it would be nice to make it possible for the uploader to mark which game or games the image belongs to, aside from choosing the license, directly at uploading time. Hello, I noticed that there are two links to one of my subpages, one involving a project on replacing images of questionable quality which hasn't been touched since 2013 or 2014, and my detailed PNG Monster page. Thank you for taking on this abandoned project, saying as a prominent image uploader in the earlier years of the wiki. When I made the project, I manually scanned all the images in MarioWiki and categorize which game it came from and what type of quality problem to do deal with the image. I would like to help you and potentially others finish up this old project, but I'm not sure if I have the time to do so right now. Keep at it! {{User:RAP/sig}} 04:44, 11 April 2016 (EDT)

==Image-quality tags==
== Re: Audio Formats ==
In all honesty, bloating that category with more and more images is bothering me more and more, as it means more things to sift through, and more to be said on how lax the guidelines are when it comes to these tags: there isn't anything allowing image-quality tags to be used for virtually everything, but there's nothing forbidding it either. The tag didn't work like this before, and now it has changed mostly because of the lack of a written guideline. I was pretty close to making a TPP shutting down the current use of the image templates but my twin made me realize that I should probably hold it off until your proposal is finished developing. Besides, maybe you probably should stop tagging it; your future proposal will probably create a separate split of image-quality templates (that one idea that I like; we have different templates for different types of bad writing, so why not several different ones for different images, as they have different purposes and qualities) and I think you might have to do some extra work in the future, replacing the general image-quality one with a more specialized one? I think you should focus on ironing out your proposal, then you can tag the images that have problems.

Maybe I'm counting chickens (or geese for that matter ha ha ha) before they hatch but I do fully support on the idea of different image-quality template to communicate image problems better. {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 22:39, 13 April 2016 (EDT)
Apologies, I'm not familiar with uploading audio files outside of the mp3 file format, which Super Mario Wiki should consider having, hence why I accidentally did so. But thanks for suggesting me some reliable websites as well for converting file formats that are Super Mario Wiki compatible for future references.
:Sounds fair enough. Actually, I think it's mostly my fault for this. I did forgot the past conversation we had about this. {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 22:56, 13 April 2016 (EDT)
::Don't worry, things will settle down soon. It's just that this idea is new for someone who has been working in this wiki for nearly 7 years now, been using the image-quality template for this long, and it's hard to adjust to new concepts like this. There's no harm intended in anything we did, lol, we just want this wiki to be a quality source of information. As for those images, that's perhaps a possibility. The Cheep-Cheep and Boo sprite isn't an ideal frame, as some other images on this wiki, that could use an idle first frame rather than a random frame. For the rest, I'm not sure about those, as it's difficult to acquire game-rips. I mean, few of us are game hackers. {{User:Baby Luigi/sig}} 23:12, 13 April 2016 (EDT)

Categorizing thousands of images is a huge job, right? When I was doing [[User_talk:Bazooka_Mario#hello|a similar job]] which involves updating hundreds of redirects, I wrote a script to automate the job, as [http://r.photo.store.qq.com/psb?/V12yaFMl2XB9mH/yl6hEUJnvu0Bgl9tSLtXYRtNBLH13SuXet5aojSdOR4!/r/dOQAAAAAAAAA this picture] shows. Since you're good at scripting I suppose you can do something similar to speed up your work of categorizing the pictures. To get a list of the pictures that lack a category by game, I have a second method which I want to share with you: download the description page of all images via Special:Export, and use regex to search for ones that lack \[\[Category\:[^\]]+? Images\]\]. This is easier than trying to get a list of them by first removing the license categories and then looking inside Special:UncategorizedFiles, and it gives the whole list at once. If you do create a list in this way please share it with me and I might be able to help categorize them too. This kind of job is always fascinating to me -- it's like looking for the lost star childs in the universe and giving them a home. But I'm a busy these days so good luck to you. #Do you have a good way to find all the Paper Mario screenshots on the wiki? Using the current category system, I haven't been able to find a way to show the intersecting part of Category:Game screenshots and Category:Paper Mario Images. It seems that the existing pics on the wiki are not much used. For example, [[:File:Dane T..PNG]] is used only on the "Dane T." article but it could be used to decorate the gallery "Toad Town". If there's a tag system like the one on Twitter where we could say, er, "#Mario and #Parakarry delivering a #letter to #DaneT in #ToadTown #PaperMario #screenshot" and have a filter system for those tags, that would be nice.
#As for Paper Mario screenshots, the black borders that arise from the ones taken from a screenshots doesn't look good in ordinary articles. Is it a good idea to crop them?

== So about the.... everything. ==

So yeah, change. I'm usually against change unless it actively improves how things work. And I actually oppose it if it has been established since forever and no one has had any troubles with it. But hey, that's my two cents on the subject. I'm pretty sure other people may or may not support the changes. There is no plenty ''at all'' for constantly making proposals (as long as it follows the rules, obviously). Even if the proposals fail, it's good to get your opinion out there. As for the idea we have on our hand right now, here is my detailed opinion.

The drop down is going to be so extensively long, because the Mario series is so expensive in term of games, it's not just going to be 2 or 3 choices. It's going to be a lot a lot longer, thus not helping users in any shape or form, that's why such an idea will not work. A better idea is to add check-boxes for the '''additional''' categories, the two on the top of my mind right now are [[:category:Beta Images|Beta Images]] and [[:category:Glitch Images|Glitch Images]]. That's something I support. As for the alternative way to deal with images games, here is my thoughts: you can modify the {{tem|aboutfile}} (of course you need a proposal for such an edit, '''especially''' because it was rejected before.) to add an option for the game. I ''kinda'' don't like this idea because first you have no place to put the game name in other than the description, and if that's the case, then why bother in the first place when you can just put it in the first parameter and call it a day. The option can also add the category automatically, but then we run into the issue of games that have categories not matching their actual name. And dealing with that is just going to be an unnecessary additional step so why bother in the first place?, but even if we are going to do that, we shouldn't fix all the previous images, for starters it would really clutter the recent changes, and hell, the time you spend on doing this trivial task should definitely be spent somewhere more important, even if outside the wiki. There are like 70 thousands files, tell me that it is a good idea. Using a bot wouldn't work neither, because there are inconsistencies all over the place in the file pages.

Yeah, inconsistencies, a word I really hate to see... anywhere, except the file pages. Why? because readers are more likely to just refer to the file pages when they want to see a larger version of the thumbnail they saw on a page. And I believe it's unusual to just surf the images. And even if they do, we ''usually'' have our trusty {{tem|aboutfile}} neatly organized for their convenience (and if it is not, you can fix that issue). However, the real articles have much much higher priority than file pages. These are what represents us as an encyclopedia. The images are just that, images, not separate articles. And [[MarioWiki:Maintenance|we as a wiki have a lot of maintenance to do]], the last thing we need to add to that pile of work is extremely minor problems here and there. Heck, one of the minor inconsistencies we have on our real articles is the order of the categories. Tell me that someone cared.

Ignored problems by the community are usually deemed not to be problems. And you should never try to invent problems over fixing already existing ones. The only way to change an already established such practice is to run through the proposals and see. If your idea is accepted than yeah, go ahead and do it. Not just say that people don't like change. They usually have a reason.

Finally, and sorry if this comes out rude, if you are responding to me, try to address as many points as possible from my message, instead of sticking to a particular point and answering as if you were talking to a naive. It just makes me not wanting to detail my thoughts.--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 20:02, 13 May 2016 (EDT)

:Like I said, it's not considered to be a worthwhile issue. That is, the {{tem|image-quality}} issue, and the drop-down categories issue.. Believe me, it is not going to work. Have you ever checked the [[list of games]] we have? This won't help most people, especially those who already break the aboutfile template. Some just rush to upload an image, and in that case, the best way to deal with it is: 1. Informally warn the user to correctly format aboutfile '''and''' add the category of the appropriate game. 2. Add the category yourself to fix the problem. Yes it's an issue, but there is no way to deal with it currently. Even the aboutfile fix would probably cease to work because many new users skim over it. Another idea would be to update [[MediaWiki:Uploadtext]], but that will probably also fail because of the same reason. There is no solution.
:Ok as for the {{tem|image-quality}}, here is a good idea. If you stumble upon semi-bad images (the ones warranting templates in your opinion), just try to fix them. If you can't, probably no one will. And if that's the case then another template is just unnecessary.
:The check boxes I mentioned '''are only for''' glitch and beta images. Other than that, you will have to add the image yourself.--{{User:Megadardery/sig}} 06:21, 14 May 2016 (EDT)

:If you want to create a bot specifically for editing, shouldn't you create a separate account for it, like, say, "Goosebot" or something? You should probably request bot status so you can mark your edits as such and not flood recent changes. Currently it is quite easy to mark an edit as minor and go unnoticed for three years. Props for using a bot for this though. {{User:Lakituthequick/sig}} 16:50, 21 May 2016 (EDT)
:I don't know how common that is, but there might be some. I'm also aware of the option to hide minors, but you hide ''all'' minor edits with that.<br>What I'm talking about is the ability to add a bot-flag to an account (yours in this case), which allows your bot to mark your edits as made by bot, which is like a minor edit, but separate (notice the hide/show bot edits option next to hide/show minor edits). I believe a bureaucrat can add that.<br>{{User:Lakituthequick/sig}} 17:28, 21 May 2016 (EDT)

== reply about file categorization ==

<nowiki>I think that just a message that says "You can optionally add game categories with [[Category:XXX Images]], with XXX being the game titles (full list here)" would be enough. When I uploaded those PMTTYD Star Piece screenshots, I added the category stuff next to the aboutfile. If you want it to be placed at the bottom of the wikicode you have to manually do that in the description page. The MediaWiki doctrine is that everything is to be stored and manipulated as plain text, which I don't think is a good "data structure" for organizing images, but we have to live with it so I don't like to put too much effort into it. About the "Image:" thing, searching for "[[Image:" will miss a lot of cases such as </nowiki>

are best taken care of by a human and I pretty much enjoy the process so I don't want to get it automated. I ''would'' appreciate it if you mass-replace "Image:" with "File:", though, since the exceptional cases are rare and can be found by grepping in advance for "'Image:' preceded by a non-'[' character or line start" over the whole wiki and then looking into the results for English sentences. {{User:A gossip-loving Toad/sig}}  22:38, 25 May 2016 (EDT)

Last check-in: October 15, 2024

I have a full time job from 8AM-5PM Monday through Friday. Consider me busy almost all the time, but I'll try to check-in from time to time.

I usually reply on the users' talk pages if you don't see my replies on my talk page. If it looks like I don't respond, I do, just in a different spot.

I have decided that archival will happen after every 100th talk section sees a resolution.

Check mark.svg Shouldn't archive (page should contain more than 100,000 characters, which this page has 35,733 at this time).

Re:Uploads are JPEG to PNG[edit]

Hi, my uploads of Paper Mario artwork were PNG to begin with. I got them from the source in the upload description if you want proof, they were already PNG. The only exception is Kooper, because I found the existing JPG artwork looked better and was slightly bigger so my bad on that one. --Fawfulthegreat64Logo.png 16:09, 1 December 2017 (EST)

OK that makes sense. --Fawfulthegreat64Logo.png 16:26, 1 December 2017 (EST)

Can I re-add the artworks that are at least more desirable than the current tiny/small ones? (Peach distress, Goomba King, Kammy etc that obviously weren't copied from the wiki to begin with) --Fawfulthegreat64Logo.png 12:03, 5 December 2017 (EST)

Reverting edits[edit]

Hey. Just to let you know, when someone's done a spate of edits you can actually undo them. Just click onto the page history, go to the last "good" revision, click edit, and then save. It's basically the rollbacking ability we have, just more steps. Yoshi876 (talk)

That sounds like you're just clicking the undo button, what you need to do is click on the timecode for that edit. When you go to edit you should get a message reading "Warning: You are editing an out-of-date revision of this page. If you save it, any changes made since this revision will be lost." Yoshi876 (talk)

Thanks[edit]

Hey, just want to say thanks for helping out with my screenshot qualities. I may have a way of getting higher quality screenshots for NES, SNES, GB, GBC, and GBA through my father's Retron system, but the setup for doing so is rather...convoluted and may not happen any time soon. So, until I'm able to meet policy on my own, thanks for the help. :) Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:43, 20 December 2017 (EST)

Despite possible Retron mistakes, the image quality would be much better than my capture card can produce. The issue is it saves to an SD card, which my computer does not have a slot for. My dad's computer does, though, so maybe I can work things out with him sometime.
The program I am currently using is called Debut Video Capture Software made by the NCH Software company, with my capture card being an AV to USB, if that helps. Not sure which one is the real issue when it comes to quality, or if it's both, but it's easily accessible and my computer can (barely) run it.
While I have no other way of capturing N64, GCN, or Wii footage and screenshots (and I can upload from the Wii U directly), I can use my father's Retron for the NES, SNES, GB, GBC, and GBA screenshots, which the Retron automatically takes at pixel-perfect size, so I'll see what I can do with that when I need to. DS and 3DS is a nope though :P Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:31, 21 December 2017 (EST)

They're from the Retron I mentioned above. Takes snapshots in the correct size, but sadly, there's no way to change the output file format :( Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:02, 16 March 2018 (EDT)

Oh, I guess I've just been saying "Retron" rather than "Retron 5" :P It can play NES, SNES, Famicom, Genesis, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:14, 17 March 2018 (EDT)

RE:SWF JPEG screenshots[edit]

To take screenshots, I put the games on full-screen and use the print screen function. I then paste them in Photoshop and save them for web as JPEG. I don't think it's possible to take screenshots directly from the SWF file, unless I download and use third-party software which I don't want to do. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 18:07, 31 December 2017 (EST)

I think I understand what you are talking about, but I do not have the Flash files (.fla) so that I could access the contents of these games. Only the Adobe Player files (.swf) that run them can be downloaded from the net. Or do you mean there are other official Flash players out there which allow me to take screenshots? I can't find them... -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 06:56, 2 January 2018 (EST)
I'm honestly out of the loop with this. Have merely downloaded and installed a new version of the Flash Player. Now, how do I effortlessly take screenshots on a .swf file? I can neither do it on browser nor on the separate file, unless I use the Print Screen function. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 12:01, 2 January 2018 (EST)
Got it. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I have the time to retake the screenshots, and it's a pretty tedious work at that. Should the image-quality template be put to the existing images? -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 09:41, 3 January 2018 (EST)

Big Steely[edit]

That page no longer covers the Super Mario 64 obstacle; as such, one of the new pages should be used for its info. Probably Iron Ball, as that's also used for various similar objects in Bowser's Inside Story. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:24, 3 January 2018 (EST)

Well that info has been removed from that article like 4 times already, and short article =/= stub. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:38, 3 January 2018 (EST)
But they don't even look the same. The SMW ones have the little finger holes in them. Because they're bowling balls. Boulder, Chomp and Big also act relatively the same. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 20:46, 3 January 2018 (EST)

RE: Concept Art Category[edit]

Branching it out makes it more convenient for viewers. I can understand wanting to keep them all in one place, but if a user were to look for some concept art, a separate category would save them the trouble of having to sift through hundreds of pre-release/unused content images. Marie costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 03:29, 18 January 2018 (EST)

I wouldn't be opposed to splitting the pre-release and unused content images, and if there are any overlaps as you mentioned (pre-release content found unused in the game), both categories can be included on the file page; if there are too many overlaps, though, then it's probably not worth splitting them. Considering we have Category:Fair use art and not "Fair use art images" (which seems a bit redundant), I don't think renaming Category:Concept art is really necessary. OK. Do you have Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars on the 3DS? I know you have a method to capture screenshots. Is it possible that you would upload the maps of these levels as they appear on the level select screen? (So, the top screen of the console.) Re:Thorny Flower[edit]

There were giant ones in the King Kaliente mission of the Good Egg Galaxy and the Sun-Baked Sand Castle mission of Dusty Dune that contained launch stars. And of course, there's still the third flying variation... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:38, 9 March 2018 (EST)

All I have to work with are YouTube videos, as I only have the game on console, and at home specifically. But I suppose that may be possible. I'm just glad there are videos recent enough to be in an acceptable picture quality, it was LP'd like crazy back in the day. Anyways, I probably can, but schoolwork must come first. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:37, 9 March 2018 (EST)
I do actually have a picture of Mario next to the small, non-Mini Wanwan from the King Kaliente mission, and I may upload it as well. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:39, 9 March 2018 (EST)
I'm not talking about Mini Wanwan, I'm talking about the smaller-than-normal Chomp variety found only on the saucer planet in the Good Egg Galaxy, which is still larger than Mini Wanwan. It's about Mario's height. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:08, 9 March 2018 (EST)
I don't know. They only appear once and act exactly like regular Chomps, and they've been acknowledged on the Chomp page for quite some time. I suppose its worth noting they're about the size of the Chain Chomps found in most sidescrollers and later 3D games.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:24, 9 March 2018 (EST)

Reddit[edit]

Everything on that page is a fan creation. Unless you plan to delete it entirely, there's no reason to single out Reddit. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 16:19, 10 March 2018 (EST)

It's a more informal page, used for collecting the miscellaneous odds-and-ends of the Internet without it encroaching on the rest of the wiki. None of the "List of references" pages have any set policies for notability, and for the moment, I'm fine with that. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 16:27, 10 March 2018 (EST)
And Reddit is neither of those things. The sentence is directed at fan projects like Super Mario Bros. Z or any old Let's Play, presumably to quell the tide of easy-to-make YouTube videos. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 16:30, 10 March 2018 (EST)
When I think of a "reference", a single "small nod" is far from the only think that I think of. That'd entirely limit games like The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening from being discussed here, and even if you want to exclude links to the Mario-based subreddits, that has nothing to do with singular posts on other, non Mario-related subreddits. Also, the fallacy is using the slippery slope as a legitimate argument. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 16:42, 10 March 2018 (EST)

MechaKoopas[edit]

Might I ask why you changed the SMG Mechakoopa image to have pre-release tags? Test templates[edit]

Hey, I get you were trying to test something with transclusion, but making a template just for it to be deleted is something you shouldn't do. If you need to test transclusion with something, you can use one of your subpages and transclude that, but creating a test template is just unnecessary. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:08, 30 March 2018 (EDT)

Yeah, no, you don't create something just for it to be deleted. That just creates extra work and is, again, unnecessary. You don't need to create a new subpage for testing, just add something to one of your (several) subpages momentarily. Once you've accomplished what you wanted, just remove the code or place it elsewhere. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:20, 30 March 2018 (EDT)
"Modifying my existing userpages was undesirable" Better than making a page marked for deletion from its creation. Record deletion shouldn't be the determining factor here. A few test edits are fine. Creating a new page intended to be deleted from the start is not. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:39, 30 March 2018 (EDT)

Helicopter "Yoshi"[edit]

I decided to mark it for deletion. For one, because of Yoshi876's rationale to delete the respective BJAODN entry. For two, I have no use for the image outside of the context. "The things I do for love!" -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 11:19, 4 April 2018 (EDT)

Though it's strange that these things were given a pass even though they're clearly acts of vandalism. Nobody could have mistakenly figured Hitler or Korto Momolu are in Mario Kart Wii.But the first rule of BJAODN specifically prohibits vandalism that is immature/otherwise not funny, and these, well, these gave me a chortle. Nevermind, I just read the third rule.-- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 11:32, 4 April 2018 (EDT)
I do not wish to insist. April Fools is a time when things have to be kept under control. Yoshi876 implied that April Fools vandalism, however funny, is an exception from BJAODN because everyone can use that time as an excuse to add jokes on pages. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 11:54, 4 April 2018 (EDT)

What was so bad about the transparency on it? I checked it in Paint.net, there are no extraneous patches of opacity, and it is cut to the edges surprisingly clean.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:10, 14 April 2018 (EDT)

How about the transparency used in the texture on the actual title screen? Suppose that'd be lower-res though....anyways yeah, Paint.net's wand tool with tolerance set to zero shows nothing. Unless you mean the edges of the words? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:25, 14 April 2018 (EDT)
Huh, I figured that would have been of the Textures Resource, guess that's why I never found it.... Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:29, 14 April 2018 (EDT)

-sigh-[edit]

I've said it before, I'll say it again if need be >.< . The English instruction manual is not the only source for Rocky Wrench. The various Shogakukan books referred to them specifically as being within the Kame-zoku, which means not "turtle," but "Turtle Tribe," which is the same term they use in the JP instruction manual for SMB1 in reference to what the English manual calls "the Koopa." Ergo, they were indisputably Koopas back then, and saying "nuh-uh they're just turtles saying they're Koopas is fancruft" when specific evidence is presented to you is just not OK. Aaaaanyways, how can Monty Mole have been the parent species? You said that Rocky was simply "revealed" first. The problem is, this hinges on the idea that Nintendo had already come up with Monty Moles before development of SMB3, despite there being no evidence to support this and the fact that Rockies were Koopas then indicating that no, they hadn't come up with them then. Furthermore, Rocky Wrench still has the less specific Japanese name. I really don't see why people don't like this idea. It makes the most sense from a design history perspective. And sorry if this comes off as unnecessarily rude, but I despise having to explain the same thing seven times. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:44, 15 April 2018 (EDT)

The only reason I PM'd you is that you seem to have not seen my explaining this multiple times, and I wanted to make sure you actually saw it. The term "Koopa" was initially used as a direct translation of "Kame-Zoku" in the SMB1 instruction manual, and ergo, they are literally synonymous, as "Koopa" was used as a translation for that. So it's not just generic turtles. It's Koopas specifically. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:03, 15 April 2018 (EDT)
Why did you say a Hammer Bro is a kind of Troopa? Are you trying to make me burst a blood vessel? That's not nice....but anyways, I don't think Bazuka is a kind of Kobble, and that's fairly comparable to this comparison. Not all Koopas are Troopas, as Troopas are a specific subgroup. Spinies are Koopas, but they certainly aren't Troopas. Please, just....have mercy, that outright causes me physical pain to see people do that. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:16, 15 April 2018 (EDT)
Sorry, as a hobbyist biologist, I really don't like it when people misclassify things. Especially Koopas, as I like Koopas, see? And I am truthful when I saw that it causes my blood vessels to fluctuate in pressure dangerously when I see that, not out of anger, but mostly out of that cringe-feeling, you know? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:26, 15 April 2018 (EDT)
I am curious as to what ground you have to say that Rocky Wrench was based off of Monty Mole 3 years before there were Monty Moles. Do you perhaps have some scans of old idea documents for SMB3 featuring unimplemented Monty Moles? I know you've seen and worked with many of the images on this wiki, so I'm legitimately curious about that. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:30, 15 April 2018 (EDT)
OK, this might get a little sappy, be warned. Mariowiki has been a huge facet of my life for about 10 years now, and even though I didn't join until a bit less than a year ago, it's always been one of my favorite sites. Getting to work on it now that I have good stronger internet access is still so amazing to me, and I wouldn't abandon this place no matter what, no matter how tempted I may sometimes get. I just kinda love this place, and just want it to be the best that it can be. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 02:35, 15 April 2018 (EDT)

Please stop making unconstructive edits on the Super Mario Wiki. This isn't a warning, and it's possible that you made a mistake by accident or without realizing it; this is simply a reminder for your information. If the action continues, then a warning will be issued. Thanks for reading and keep contributing.
If you feel this reminder was undeserved, you may appeal it.

re this edit: copying content wholesale from other wikis is frowned upon even if it's "legal" or a case of recycling one own's writing, and even *if* we did allow copied content, simply throwing a link to TCRF is not proper attribution of the writing. --Glowsquid (talk) 22:59, 18 April 2018 (EDT)

Re: Audio Formats[edit]

Apologies, I'm not familiar with uploading audio files outside of the mp3 file format, which Super Mario Wiki should consider having, hence why I accidentally did so. But thanks for suggesting me some reliable websites as well for converting file formats that are Super Mario Wiki compatible for future references.

Though I noticed that you uploaded a new version of the audio file with lower audio quality from the supposed 64DD emulator, but is there any other way you could convert the YouTube video I converted to the appropriate Super Mario Wiki playable format instead? I don't mean to bug you, it's just that I choose that particular YouTube video as it was a higher quality boot sound than most I could find, including your audio upload.--Jjrapper100 (talk) 13:34, 3 May 2018 (EDT)

Well, thanks for telling me as for why MP3 files can't be used. But that blows, since the said YouTube video had a higher quality of the Nintendo 64DD's boot menu sound than your audio upload is all, so I guess we'll leave it at your current audio upload then. --Jjrapper100 (talk) 08:42, 5 May 2018 (EDT)
