The Club Nintendo comic "Sag niemals Holerö!" marked the first appearance of hot dogs in the Mario series. In this story, when an evil alien called Heini pronounced the word "Holerö", all humans would turn into a type of food typical of the country where they live in. Mario spent a holiday in Switzerland, and when he was about to go back to New York, he noticed that the crew of his airline had turned into (animate) hot dogs. They had eyes, legs and a mouth, wore hats and were garnished with mustard.

Hot Dogs also appeared in the Paper Mario series. They were first seen as an item in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In Glitzville, a hot dog stand sells the item for ten coins. The item heals five HP and five FP. As part of a trouble posted at the Trouble Center, if Mario takes two Hot Dogs and a Mousse Cake to Bub-ulber in Petalburg, the Bub-ulb will give the plumber a useful Dried Bouquet.

Mr. Hoggle, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

A Hot Dog is an item that appears in the Paper Mario series.

History[edit]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

Hot Dogs first appear in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, as a recovery item only found in Glitzville where Mr. Hoggle sells them at his hot dog stand for 10 coins. The item restores 5 HP and 5 FP. As part of a trouble posted at the Trouble Center, if Mario takes two Hot Dogs and a Mousse Cake to Bub-ulber in Petalburg, the Bub-ulb will give the plumber a Dried Bouquet. Another form of Hot Dog involved mixing the Ratooey Businessman's Hot Sauce with another of Hoggle's Hot Dogs, the Fat Dog, to create a Hot Dog known as the Tongue-Blistering Fat Dog, but it is unknown if it ever happened.

One of the other known forms of Hot Dog was the Southern Fried Egg Dog of Tastiness, a Hot Dog made with an egg from a "southern island", probably either Lavalava Island or Yoshi's Island. The Yoshi Egg Hoggle planned to make this Hot Dog out of, though, did not cooperate (eventually bursting into the Yoshi Kid), resulting in no Southern Fried Egg Dogs of Tastiness being sold.

In the Nintendo Switch remake, Zess T. can combine a Hot Dog and some Hot Sauce to make a Hottest Dog. This is hinted at after completing the Businessman's trouble.

Super Paper Mario[edit]

Hot Dogs return in Super Paper Mario as a recovery item and recipe. The player can give Dyllis a Power Steak and a Fresh Veggie to make a Hot Dog. Alternatively, it can be bought at the Itty Bits in The Overthere for 120 coins. It restores 20 HP and cures Poison.
