Chain Chomp Romp is a boss minigame in Mario Party 9. It is based on the Japanese puzzle game amidakuji.
Introduction[edit]
The camera shows a view of the players, the tracks, the cannons, and Chain Chomp. The camera then zooms in on Chain Chomp, who romps around slightly, followed by the two volcanoes in the background erupting, one after another.
Gameplay[edit]
The players attempt to damage Chain Chomp by selecting one of five minecarts and hoping that they lead to a cannon. Before each round, the players get a brief view of the rails and the alternations between paths. The players must then select their minecarts by pushing one of the buttons displayed. Along the tracks, there are routes that switch the paths the minecarts are taking. There are five paths: Four lead to cannons (occasionally, one leads to a gold cannon; gold cannons spawn once every two rounds), and one leads to Chain Chomp. Players who reach a cannon can blast Chain Chomp. Taking the path leading to Chain Chomp deducts one point from the player's score (unless that player has no points). Each player who reaches a cannon fires at Chain Chomp in order from left to right. Iron cannons are worth one point, while the gold cannon is worth three points and deals Chain Chomp more damage. After Chain Chomp loses half its health, two of the tracks lead to it instead of cannons. Thus, when four characters play, in every round at least one player ends up reaching Chain Chomp. The player who lands the final attack earns an additional three points, and the player who earns the most points when Chain Chomp is defeated wins. Chain Chomp has 20 hit points total.
Ending[edit]
Chain Chomp is blown back by the final attack. The stake it is connected to is pulled out of the ground by the sudden push back, and Chain Chomp flies away, revealing several Mini Stars in Party Mode and Solo Mode. The volcanoes then erupt once more, one after the other.

Trivia[edit]
- If the player decides to restart the minigame after completing it, there is a bug where Chain Chomp's "angry" idle animation plays for a few seconds before it romps around, at which point it goes back to its normal idle animation.
