::::OK, and to finish it off, delete the revision that has the comment ''Didn't look like that before. Let's try this one.'' (delete log should say <kbd>20160717061823!Super_chick_sisters.svg</kbd> was deleted). The 3 revisions I wanted to be left alone is to serve as notes that I attempted to understand the SVG format; to make it compatible with MediaWiki, the software that MarioWiki uses. Something is telling me that the SVG to PNG conversion (behind the scenes) is glitchy. When the SVG displays on real webpages, it shows a PNG rather than the real SVG so that way browsers that have inferior or no SVG support can still view the image the way it was meant to be viewed. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 16:57, 17 July 2016 (EDT)

:Thanks for the answer. I'm not sure if it's really from an early build. It could also be taken from Nintendo's website or official player guide, where things can be represented differently from the in-game camera. There is also [[:File:S.S Flavion .jpg|this picture]] for which the moon can not be captured in full by the in-game camera. In such cases, is it better to favor content (leave it as is) or quality (replace it with the in-game camera version in mainspace)? {{User:A gossip-loving Toad/sig}}  09:40, 19 August 2016 (EDT)

I have noticed that some pre-release images can be prone to unwanted edits because they weren't categorized with [[:Pre-release and unused images]]. [[User:Wildgoosespeeder/Prerelease/sandbox|I have a template idea]]. Mix that with using a bot for the category I mentioned to auto change over to the template and this is an easy fix for a category of about ~1,250 images. Only question is the template good enough for proposal? Feel free to edit. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 00:28, 21 August 2016 (EDT)

Um…, I have a few questions about screenshots. The first is what if someone uploads borderless ''Paper Mario'' screenshots from an [http://shrines.rpgclassics.com/n64/papermario/starpleasant.shtml external website]? The second is, some emulators break the boundaries between “screenshots” and “3D renderings.” For examples, N64 screenshots that consists mainly of 3D objects, like [[:File:Koopa Bros. Fortress.png|this one]], exhibits Nintendo's content better when rendered at a higher resolution. The Dolphin emulator even allows the player to enlarge the viewport [[:File:PMTTYD Rogueport Inn.png|like this]]. Are such images considered to be screenshots or 3D renderings, or a “hybrid” between the two? —{{User:A gossip-loving Toad/sig}}  12:19, 25 August 2016 (EDT)

:#It is advised to not use an external website for images because there is near-zero quality control. Use with caution. The source you provided is terrible anyways and, at the time, I was replacing [[List of Star Pieces in Paper Mario|those images]] one by one with clean versions but we had a discussion about screenshots with borders so I lost interest with [[Paper Mario]] up until [[Boo's Mansion]].

:#I think that custom 3D renders can be exempt from the pixel accuracy screenshots thing as long as no HUD elements are present, because emulating at higher resolutions than what a real N64 can do internally has issues with HUD elements being upscaled and filtered improperly (very common with the most commonly used graphics plug-ins)[http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Nintendo_64_emulators#Emulation_issues]. The angrylion's plug-in does things automatically and reproduces things pixel-accurately as best as it can.

On help format it says you can change the text Color by coding. There is also another way to do so and that is like this: {{color|Fawful|red}} (example:<nowiki>{{color|Midbus|blue}}</nowiki>) shouldn't this be mentioned on [[Help:Format]] because I can't edit the page. Hi—I took a look at your "Image use policy" WIP and it forbade maps with unofficial annotations. Would [[:File:PaperMario-Chapter7-StarSpiritOnIce-ShiverMountain1.PNG|this image]] (or [[:File:ShiverCity-Area1.PNG|this]]) have to be deleted? (In addition it is also a refactor of the game elements, and the artist, Peardian, told me via email that they were not happy to see their work posted here with the credit part cropped out anyway.) {{User:A gossip-loving Toad/sig}}  09:22, 4 October 2016 (EDT)

:(3) While we're at it, there are also these PMTTYD screenshots that have the black borders removed. In contrast with the black borders in ''[[Paper Mario]]'''s which are hardly-noticeable on real console, the black borders in ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'' are part of the cutscene effect and thus part of the "content". Cropping them out results in images that look like this (awfully "bald" in my opinion):

Hi. I encountered a problem when I tried to cite [http://www.gamefaqs.com/gamecube/920182-paper-mario-the-thousand-year-door/faqs/63451 jdaster64's PMTTYD enemy drop stat] on GameFAQs. ::That's why there is a compromise where we get one screenshot and/or sprite per game for each character involved. In the case of [[Mega Mario]], the five screenshots of what characters look like (also considering where the [[Mega Star]] appeared so that way the backgrounds are different for variety and documenting you can find them there as well) is sufficient. Any more and that is overkill. The only reason I uploaded a replacement is just in case someone saw value in an image and had a significant reason why it should be kept. :Three things about that. One, it makes the file history more manageable. Two, if we really want to rid the wasted space on the files, {{user|Porplemontage}} has [[mediawiki.org:Manual:Image administration#Deletion of images|this option]]. Three, makes me wonder why MediaWiki duplicates files upon reversion. A simple file selector would be way more efficient and less wasteful of server resources. --{{User:Wildgoosespeeder/sig}} 22:47, 28 October 2016 (EDT)

:Took care of the revisions, thanks. Regarding the notice board idea, I don't agree with your idea for several reasons. Unlike the vandal noticeboard, there is absolutely no priority in deleting file revision warring. If individual users require admin attention due to their poor behaviour while warring, then the standard noticeboard can already do that. And only administrators can delete file revisions, whereas the entire admin team can monitor the vandal noticeboard. Finally, I don't think the other administrators are willing to take the time to delete warring revisions: again, it's not a priority. And it must be done correctly, because valid improvements to the image should not be deleted. If you spot the occassional bothersome filepage, just come to me and I'll be happy to take care of it. {{User:Shokora/sig}} 09:54, 7 December 2016 (EST)

:Sure, I'll go do that soon. The issue is that the latest revision cannot be deleted: so unless a new revision is uploaded, that last comment on the logs can't be deleted. I've just tried to look for a higher quality version to reupload, but it looks like the European press site doesn't host any ''Double Dash'' assets anymore (I'm very sure that they used to). So I'll just upload a dummy revision, to allow the last comment to be deleted. {{User:Shokora/sig}} 14:16, 7 November 2016 (EST)

I have an idea for a template. All of the articles about forms refer to [[Mario]]. For example, [[Fire Mario]] is not {{fakelink|Fire Form}}. While that makes sense, since Mario is the titular protagonist of the series, I still think it would be a good idea to have a template that explains that it is a form used by characters other than Mario and and lists the other characters who have used it. For example, the template on Fire Mario would look something like this.

Notable enemy/character pages should already serve that purpose using the {{tem|character-infobox}} For example, as [[Princess Shroob]] and [[Petey Piranha]] does. :Good question. A quality sprite should be more appropriate in that case. But when sprites are too small to be seen properly at the native size (such as those seen in ''Super Mario Land''), then a screenshot might be better for the infobox, and the sprite shown elsewhere on the article instead. {{User:Shokora/sig}} 07:20, 26 December 2016 (EST)

Yo

What's up? Haven't seen you around for quite a while. driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 18:48, 22 June 2016 (EDT)

G'day there, thanks I've been very well and in good health. It's been a while yes. I've finished school last year in Australia, now I'm staying with family in Europe for a year before I start university I feel like I've matured a lot, but I'll always be a kid with a computer whenever I find myself in this place again. YoshiKong 19:16, 22 June 2016 (EDT)
Good to know. I kind of felt the same way tbh, I took a leave from the community myself from late 2014/early 2015 until a few months ago when I got bored and decided to come back and edit. Did you trade your Cold Chisel fandom back for this? ;P driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 19:21, 22 June 2016 (EDT)
My Cold Chisel fandom isn't up for trades. YoshiKong 19:24, 22 June 2016 (EDT)
I thought as much. A few things have happened around here; Mario jc (talk) was repromoted recently, there were fewer proposals this year so far but had good content nevertheless, and a few extra boards to hold cluttered threads were added on the forums. On a much more sad note, Walkazo (talk) passed away in a traffic accident on Easter; the community is still mourning her loss and the upcoming summer 'Shroom issue will be dedicated to her.

Those were the main events in 2016 so far, not sure about last year. driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 19:31, 22 June 2016 (EDT)

'Shroom Images

I was browsing Special:UnusedFiles. I noticed it was quite smaller. The last I have seen it, it was slightly below 500 images going unused. Now it is down to almost 300 images. I wondered why. I noticed several 'Shroom images missing from the cache. I have been wanting to see that for some time now (here) but wasn't sure of the best way to make it happen. I knew those images weren't deleted but out of curiosity, I wanted to see what changed to make it happen. I remember seeing File:BackgroundWaluigi.png in that special page. How did you make the image reference itself? I don't see the mark-up anywhere! Must be an admin access only thing. Thanks for clearing those images out! --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 13:49, 5 July 2016 (EDT)

Actually, now I see how you did it! {{shroom-image}} was edited. I see the mark-up change. Using a CSS style with the DIV tag to hide the enclosed mark-up and used a MediaWiki magic word. Brilliant! Better than my original idea! I do have a suggestion though. Even though the image is hidden from view, bandwidth will still be consumed. Just do [[{{FULLPAGENAME}}|1x1px]]. That should reduce background bandwidth consumption if someone were to access the file links that are in Category:Shroom images.
Sorry for the multiple edits in a row for your talk page. This got me thinking and I reply before I have the idea to say. Anyways, this sort of change might be a good idea for {{not-unused}}. Should that template be edited too? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 14:19, 5 July 2016 (EDT)
I have worked with a little bit of MediaWiki scripting but that code that you claim wasn't yours is indeed clever and I never would have thought of that. I even had an idea to make code for {{image-quality}} a bit more versatile (see its talk page) but Walkazo (talk) (before her death) shot it down so we compromised and the current code you see is based on our agreement we reached. Anyways, to demonstrate the MediaWiki Magic Word, User talk:Shokora/Archive 10 (output of {{FULLPAGENAME}} on this page minus bolding, check the mark-up for yourself). Put that on a file page (such as File:BackgroundWaluigi.png) and you get File:BackgroundWaluigi.png as output (no link or italicizing), but for that file page. MediaWiki templating allows us to shortcut some tediousness. So combine those together and you got yourself an elegant solution to prevent 'Shroom images showing up in Special:UnusedFiles. Just change <div style="display: none;">[[{{FULLPAGENAME}}]]</div> to <div style="display: none;">[[{{FULLPAGENAME}}|1x1px]]</div> and you are all set. If you are unsure, I can show you on {{not-unused}}. I can modify that, since it seems like you want to update that template as well so any of those images tagged with that stop showing up in Special:UnusedFiles as well. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:43, 5 July 2016 (EDT)
Fantastic! You understood what the code was doing and you implemented the changes I recommended. PNG Monster, three things:
  1. Oops! Forgot you asked about that! I do have all the original files. I'll figure out something to get you that program.
  2. I was thinking of redoing the interface to allow for better user-friendlyness because the place where I downloaded it had the source code included.
  3. A gossip-loving Toad (talk) had a better idea about having this website host optimized PNGs (see my talk page).
Shadow vs. shadowless, I have no preference. I do have an unanswered question on Gallery talk:Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. I find it redundant to have both. It's just a matter of finding which one the majority likes better. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 14:48, 6 July 2016 (EDT)
Lossless means lossless. The perceived color change is likely meta data that the web browser doesn't read but a regular image editor/viewer does. This color change doesn't usually happen with certain file types, such as {{game-screenshot}} or {{game-sprite}} images. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 15:10, 6 July 2016 (EDT)
You sure you can't download the link provided by the PNG Monster page? I was able to with relative ease. Try using CCleaner to clear your browser cache. There's even an extension for it called CCEnhancer that tells CCleaner to check even more places to delete junk files. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:23, 8 July 2016 (EDT)

WIP

I was looking at Special:RecentChanges and found some WIP you were working on. I have some similar stuff I was working on:

I would like them to get out of WIP status and be used officially, maybe how you want your policy drafts to be like that some day. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:01, 6 July 2016 (EDT)

Thanks! Keep in mind that my GCN/Wii emulation section is not 100% ideal largely due to programming faults with the most popular emulator for those two consoles. The images I upload are not what a real console outputs. What I upload is around HD quality (between 720p and 1080p) and those consoles are only capable of 480p at the most. N64, just let the angrylion plug-in do the sizing because it is the most accurate and sizes do vary sometimes, unless something doesn't look right, then use Glide64. The other sections are perfectly fine from what I can tell. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:42, 7 July 2016 (EDT)
The answer has been revealed by the silly goose: MarioWiki:Sandbox. You can also ask Porplemontage (talk). You can also view source code in your browser of Special:RecentChanges (output is HTML and not PHP). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:21, 7 July 2016 (EDT)
You're welcome! --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 21:38, 7 July 2016 (EDT)

Now for MarioWiki:Image use policy. I saw you create a sandbox version too of that page. I have had a discussion open for months without a reply: MarioWiki talk:Image Use Policy The sandbox page I created just yesterday, I am looking to see the changes be implemented immediately because the edit is so minor. What do you think? Should my recommended change be implemented right away? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 15:29, 10 July 2016 (EDT)

Just to be clear, my draft is just header insertion and your draft looks like a complete overhaul of the MarioWiki policy page. I can understand a proposal for the overhaul, but not really so much for my draft. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:17, 10 July 2016 (EDT)
OK. One problem. Only two admins responded. Henry Tucayo Clay (talk) liked the idea but the now deceased Walkazo (talk) disapproved. I would like this to be heard by all admins so I can put my discussion to rest without the need for a proposal. As for your draft(s), make sure to include the section about cropping screenshots. It doesn't look like your draft(s) include that. Porplemontage (talk) mandated that black borders be cropped and if such a crop occurs, it has to be documented in {{aboutfile}}. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:33, 10 July 2016 (EDT)
Just checking in because I saw you edited my page (sorry, it was a 1:1 copy before I strictly added the headers and I didn't realize I copied the category). Did a discussion about my proposed change happen yet? If so, do they agree with my changes? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 00:13, 22 July 2016 (EDT)

re: Moving image titles

Hello, thanks for your recent image title moves. The new names are clearer and more specific. But in future, please remember to tag all the old redirects left behind with {{delete|title moved}}. The procedure is to delete redirects to images. Thanks, and keep contributing.

Fair enough for the most part. The only thing is that the wrong-title for the Powerfest SMB:TLL logo was still linked on a User: page that I couldn't edit. - Reboot (talk) 12:31, 9 July 2016 (EDT)

I have an ever-growing gripe as to how useless Special:WantedFiles has become. To reduce chances of contributing to that mess, I try to take a screenshot as close as possible to the image that needs to be replaced. If the image of terrible quality is PNG, I make sure to click Upload a new version of this file instead of going to Special:Upload. If the image is not a PNG, I just hope the image is not being linked to a page I can't edit. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:17, 9 July 2016 (EDT)

PNG Monster

If you want to give a better alternative to PNG Monster a try, play around with Megadardery (talk)'s ExplodePNG and my PNG Monstrous. It includes a very recent PNG optimizer that claims to be 5-10% better than the leading PNG optimizer (pngout). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 03:54, 11 July 2016 (EDT)

Protected File

Why did you protect File:NintendoClassicNES UK.jpg to only allow sysops permission to edit? I have seen many featured items on Main Page and the files linked were never protected. This is just an odd choice to me. I have seen MarioWiki:Autoconfirmed users permission on articles, but never full blown protection (except for help, policy, and template pages). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:38, 14 July 2016 (EDT)

Alright then. Since the image was switched over to File:NES Classic Edition.jpg and that became protected instead of File:NintendoClassicNES UK.jpg, it needs Category:Nintendo Entertainment System Images. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:54, 14 July 2016 (EDT)

Delete Archive Versions of Files

Occasionally, I see you delete archived versions of files. Seems like a good idea if the archived versions are mistakes with uploads or reversion warring (similar to edit warring, which is against the rules, don't know where though it says so). I see two versions in File:Super Mario 64 DS logo.png uploaded by you that looked like a mistake you immediately reverted. Want to delete them? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 21:41, 16 July 2016 (EDT)

Since my mind is on the subject, can you remove all but the first and last versions of File:Super chick sisters.svg? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 02:40, 17 July 2016 (EDT)
Actually, just wipe out 7 of those 10 versions of those images. The first version, the second to latest revision, and the latest revision stay. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 05:00, 17 July 2016 (EDT)
Thanks for those deletions. Unfortunately, a mistake was made to my request. I guess I wasn't clear enough. The middle revision was one I wanted deleted. The revision I wanted to stay was one linking to a MediaWiki page. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 15:00, 17 July 2016 (EDT)
OK, and to finish it off, delete the revision that has the comment Didn't look like that before. Let's try this one. (delete log should say 20160717061823!Super_chick_sisters.svg was deleted). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:57, 17 July 2016 (EDT)

You seem to be the go-to guy for deleting older revisions of files. Delete Its-a-me Yoshi! (talk)'s revisions for File:NASuperGameBoy.jpg. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 03:53, 20 July 2016 (EDT)

File:1-UpMushroomNSMB2.png, delete the two February 14, 2016 and the two June 24, 2016 revisions please! --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:03, 31 July 2016 (EDT)
Accidently uploaded twice: File:W4 SM3DL.png and File:LuigiStarWorld.png. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 22:15, 3 August 2016 (EDT)
I hate to keep bugging you about this: File:SM3DL Prolog5.png --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:38, 5 August 2016 (EDT)
Two things:
  1. The reason I wanted the older version deleted is because File:SM3DL Prolog3.png was uploaded as a standalone file.
  2. Would other sysops agree to delete revisions as you would? I'm starting to think there should be a designated page to request deletion of older versions of files, such as those that are the result of revision wars (edit wars) or upload mistakes. That way any sysop can fulfill the delete request.

Sorry about that Luigi's Mansion edit thing. I was reading the article for my own pleasure when I realised there were lots of grammar errors in a section, and when I found another badly written section I just went through the whole thing. Next time I'll make sure to do it all it one edit. Thanks for the tip! Quizmelon.

Play Nintendo Artwork

On Yoshi Noir (talk)'s talk, I edited the SVGs to have the Play Nintendo image category and included them in Play Nintendo. He reverted my edits. I explained my rationale to him. What do you think? Should my original edits stand (linking and +category) or should the images be left alone (no linking and -category)? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:29, 23 July 2016 (EDT)

I can think of a non-Play Nintendo example where we can just use two or more image categories for one image: File:MKDDMushroom.png gets used by both Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart DS. Anyways, just be sure to update Yoshi Noir (talk) that my edits were fine for the SVGs and page and should be reverted. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 20:08, 23 July 2016 (EDT)

Vandalism policy

Hello. I noticed that recently MarioWiki:Vandalism was revamped and also had MarioWiki:Trolls merged with it. I'm wondering, did that stem from the proposal I made in the past to delete the page as it was too similar to MarioWiki:Vandalism (the idea of rewriting it was also put forward in the proposal discussion), or was the whole thing a separate admin decision? driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 12:38, 26 July 2016 (EDT)

Alright, thanks. driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 16:41, 26 July 2016 (EDT)

Thanks!

Thanks for the compliment for my contributions of Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition here. A few members made some pretty helpful contributions for the game, but I'm the one that's been at it on-and-off for over a year now. Doesn't help that it's not exactly a popular game, which seems to be why not many people have made contributions for it, lol. --Zootalo (talk) 19:55, 26 July 2016 (EDT)

Precisely... and it's always good to know that such contributions aren't going unnoticed. --Zootalo (talk) 20:36, 26 July 2016 (EDT)

General Comments About Your Return to Sysop

From what I can understand, you departed from MarioWiki July 23, 2014 and didn't return until nearly two years later. I registered April 30, 2010, only doing a handful of contributions over the course of five years but didn't start becoming really active until November 18, 2015 submitting mostly replacement screenshots and other images near daily. I have only seen you through comments on older talk page discussions and I thought you were just another member gone passé or something (not sure the best way to describe your leave because I have seen once active regular members just disappear based on talk pages and looking at file histories). RAP (talk) seems to fit this description. Anyways, it wasn't until you got sysop status a month or so ago did I learn and realize the extent of your contributions and understanding of MarioWiki. Just some noteworthy points about what I have noticed about your more recent contributions:

  • I see you have implementing much needed changes to MarioWiki, such as fixing images tagged with {{shroom-image}} showing up in Special:UnusedFiles and your recent modification to {{TPP}} putting in GMT time. I also left a comment here.
  • You are very eager to cooperate with others asking for your assistance!
  • For <gallery>, I noticed you are putting in the prefix File: and (maybe) using <center> (such as your edits to Play Nintendo). I don't know for sure why those were there on some other articles I have edited. What I understand now is that they can be removed or excluded with no ill effect. Maybe before 2014, there was a weird glitch with galleries that has since been fixed in between your departure period. I know this wasn't much of a comment remarking on good changes but I felt like you might not be informed about something Porplemontage (talk) changed.

Ok, that makes sense as I didn't realize the page was semiprotected. Also would it be a good idea to add a link to the noticeboard on the front page or something? driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 15:17, 28 July 2016 (EDT)

Two Images

Not sure why you reinstated this image because we have this screenshot and this sprite. Having the image you put back just seems redundant to me. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:48, 29 July 2016 (EDT)

How so significantly different? Also it is beneficial to use images more than once if it can be done. I have an idea to meet in the middle. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:54, 29 July 2016 (EDT)
Nope. Both are from emulators on a PC. If I remember correctly, both images are from the same level as well. Used estimated palate swapping from JPEGs on Miiverse to reflect the current release status of the game. I can't even get the PNG screenshots to work on my 3DS with that particular title. 3DS homebrew is buggy and very hit or miss over the two days finally being able to work with it by the use of the browserhax exploit. Volcano Shot

Hi YoshiKong, I noticed that you put the Category:Mario Tennis: Power Tour onto the Volcano Shot article, however I realised that the Category:Mario Tennis: Power Tour Power Shots also exists, which is in the previously mentioned category. Does this mean that the category that you placed on the article is not needed as it is already within a category that's within that category? (I can't find where the category guide page is btw.) - Ninelevendo's Sig Image 08:32, 2 August 2016 (EDT)

Thanks for the link, I've had a quick read over it and haven't found an exact answer to my question yet. What the article does seem to imply is that categories main purpose is for navigation, and having only the most specific category makes articles with non-specific categories easier to find and see. I'll wait for your reply and thoughts before I do anything, however. - Ninelevendo's Sig Image 08:10, 4 August 2016 (EDT)

Help wanted in proposal creation

Hello, YoshiKong,

Since you offered me help before, I thought I might as well ask you again, as the Proposals article on the wiki is not making things very easy for me. I intend to create a proposal, but I can't tell if the proposal's title belongs in the 'Subject' box, or in the talk box itself. I want to make it look professional, but I'm worried I'll make a mistake. Can you offer advice?

All the best,

Blocking of Fawful's Minion

I don't know why you blocked Fawful's Minion (talk). From his past behavior, he has shown much improvement and wanting to get on people's good side. Please reconsider. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 03:41, 7 August 2016 (EDT)

Hello Wildgoosespeeder. Edit warring, and using witty or provocative comments against a vandal are both warnable offenses. Due to Fawful Minion's large disciplinary history and numerous amounts of reminders/warnings, I strongly feel that a ban, rather than another warning, was justified. I have set the ban for two weeks, as it was the first disciplinary ban given to Fawful's Minion, as per the recommended blocking procedure.
However, I will ask the other administrators to review the ban and it's length. I will provide you with their opinion soon.
Thanks, YoshiKong (talk) 15:37, 8 August 2016 (EDT)
OK. I was concerned about this block in particular because he was actively getting in contact with me (and I think any sysop) to make sure his contributions were less questionable or not questionable anymore. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 15:46, 8 August 2016 (EDT)

The other admins have agreed that the ban was justified, as per my given reasons. Thanks, YoshiKong (talk) 05:06, 10 August 2016 (EDT)

I just checked back in. Bummer. I was really hoping the ban would be nullified. Thanks for trying. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:59, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

Sorry, still confused.

Hello again,

Thanks for your advice on the proposals, but I'm still a bit confused as what you said contradicts with what the Proposals page says. My proposal concerns a large number of articles, but the MarioWiki:Proposals page states that if it is a specific group of articles, then it still belongs as a Talk Page Proposal. Now I'm not sure whether to put it as a Talk Page Proposal or a Miscellaneous Proposal. Can you help?

Thanks,

RE: Help:Screenshot

Most sections feel like they are complete with the necessary information. The only sections I don't feel 100% confident the section is complete are N64 (Expansion Pak actually increasing internal resolution from 320x240 to 640x480 for games that can utilize it because the angrylion plugin doesn't respond as such from what I was led to believe), GCN/Wii (pesky no pixel accurate screenshots, forcing me to compensate with oversized images), Wii U (homebrew-ready but no way to get clean PNGs unlike 3DS homebrew), GBA (mGBA emulator may be better and 3DS homebrew has a port of it), and DS/DSi (the best emulator is not graphically accurate). The saves, cheating, and passwords section I hope encourages people to try emulators to both lower iteration time and to get a high quality screenshot so that way they feel they don't have to play the game twice or use the terrible quality YouTube route. We can do better than that. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:12, 10 August 2016 (EDT)

about the enemy boxes

Hi. I saw your reply to my comment on MarioWiki:Proposals#Create a template for the TTYD badge drop rates. My original intention was to include the probability in the "item" entry for The Thousand-Year Door enemy boxes, but I now no longer suggest it since the document I cited forbids reusing the content without consent and credit. In addition, the drop rate is determined by several factors and hard to be summarized by a single fraction. For the Wikidata part, I consider the same data being duplicated on the bestiaries as well as individual enemy pages suboptimal due to the reasons stated on MarioWiki:Once and only once, but there is no better alternative around since we currently only have text replacement and macro-like conditional constructs in our template mechanism unlike Wiktionary, where people can write Lua to store and retrieve structured information conveniently.

There is one thing that could be improved, though. It seems that the "item" entries in the Paper Mario series are incomplete. For example, our list of Goomba profiles and statistics says Goombas in The Thousand-Year Door can hold "Dried Shroom, Fire Flower, Close Call", while the document I cited lists also Tasty Tonic, Sleepy Sheep, Mini Mr. Mini, Close Call P, and Power Jump as it is a complete hacking into the game and can detect hard-to-find ones. The Thousand-Year Door bestiary as well as the enemy boxes scattered among the wiki could be updated to reflect current research. For Paper Mario, however, there is no such document as far as I know and the best we could do is to list the ones people have found by manual searching. Do you think it is a good idea to add a mouseover text to the Paper Mario enemy box saying that the listed items might be incomplete? A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 23:47, 10 August 2016 (EDT)

Thanks for the reply. Actually it was Zootalo (talk) who did most of the work and I was just re-posting this user's discovery. It seems that requiring consent for reusing content is a special cult on GameFAQs, and Zootalo mentioned that the author of that document posted the data also on personal website. Answer regarding edit

Hello, Ben! Nice to converse with you again after such a long time. I am fine, thank you! Also, thanks for your appreciation towards my recent edits! On to our main business, it's only now that I notice the respective screenshot goes unused and I am sorry for not paying more attention (I eventually moved it here, don't worry). However, it does not picture Trench Tucks at all. This is why I wiped the image off the article, intending to replace it with a convenient and relevant picture sometime later, when I have time. Sure, you can google "trench tuck" and find a very delicate image of the penguin enemy over a black background, but it is an in-game screenshot that had the toy stand shopped out (if you played the game, you know what I mean). Since I want to keep the screenshot in the vain of other relevant ones, such as this and this (notice how the characters stand on wooden supports), I prefer not to leech it from the Internet and be more original. -- -- KOOPA CON CARNE 17:02, 15 August 2016 (EDT)

Enemy boxes (again)

For Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, I found that some of the enemy tattles on the wiki are incomplete (lacking the part where Goombella states the enemy's Max HP, Attack and Defense), and there is a better source containing the complete tattles. However, the enemy boxes are duplicated on the individual enemy pages as well as on the bestiary. If I were to update those enemy pages to add the complete version of the tattles, should these edits be marked minor or not?

Thanks. -- A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 04:38, 17 August 2016 (EDT)

Image replacement

Hello YoshiKong. By browsing the wiki's existing PMTTYD literature, I found several JPG, low-resolution images that seem to be from an early build of the game and is therefore hard to replicate on emulators. For example, this is an image of such kind illustrating Riddle Tower:

A full view of the Riddle Tower

while the best I can get by playing the game is:

The Riddle Tower (with the third floor out of camera)

Can such screenshots be replaced for "better quality"? Thanks. --A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 00:35, 19 August 2016 (EDT)

Thanks for the answer. I'm not sure if it's really from an early build. It could also be taken from Nintendo's website or official player guide, where things can be represented differently from the in-game camera. There is also this picture for which the moon can not be captured in full by the in-game camera. In such cases, is it better to favor content (leave it as is) or quality (replace it with the in-game camera version in mainspace)? A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 09:40, 19 August 2016 (EDT)
To reassure A gossip-loving Toad (talk), I do this too if the differences are noticeable. I've done it to a few Super Mario Galaxy pages and images where someone was using the beta screenshot for the main article. Just be sure to add Category:Pre-release and unused content images to applicable images. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:36, 19 August 2016 (EDT)

I have noticed that some pre-release images can be prone to unwanted edits because they weren't categorized with Pre-release and unused images. I have a template idea. Mix that with using a bot for the category I mentioned to auto change over to the template and this is an easy fix for a category of about ~1,250 images. Only question is the template good enough for proposal? Feel free to edit. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 00:28, 21 August 2016 (EDT)

Art Reduction In Dimensions

File:PMCS - Princess Peach.png - Why would you reduce the pixels? I can understand cropping to remove a surrounding transparent or colored border but reduction of pixels? MediaWiki caches a scaled down version automatically, which is much smaller in file size, without affecting the source image. This happens when thumb, <gallery>, or when [[File:TheFile.png|60px]] is done when linking if the file dimensions are bigger than those values. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:57, 19 August 2016 (EDT)

You can have a picture be 100000x100000 as long as the file size is below 10MB (probably limited to toon shading and/or 256-color depth or lower as that has far more pixel redundancies). Dimensions aren't really the problem. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:43, 19 August 2016 (EDT)
Limit says so Special:Upload. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:03, 19 August 2016 (EDT)
OK, 100000x100000 is excessive (and my computer throws a memory error trying to create an image with those kind of dimensions). I was trying to make a point how under the right circumstances, dimensions don't matter because MediaWiki will auto-resize and cache that reduced version without affecting the source image. It does this because it would be extremely inefficient to use the larger image. I rely on file size only because that is all one has to worry about with this Wiki in almost all situations. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:21, 19 August 2016 (EDT)

Image Categorization

Hello, Shokora. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly categorize the file. It's simple to learn how to do so. Just search for the correct category by starting with the following groups:

Images Audio/video files

When uploading, copy the full title of the category and insert it in square brackets into the summary text box below the {{aboutfile}} template, replacing the {{uncategorized}} template entirely. If you're using the upload function from the text editor, simply add the category link to the description. For example, files related to the game Super Mario World would use:

[[Category:Super Mario World images]]
or
[[Category:Super Mario World media files]]

Please consider the above information before uploading more files. Keep in mind that some files can belong to multiple categories. Do not put images into the media files category, or vice versa. If you continue uploading files without categorizing them correctly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

I noticed you have to repeat yourself letting people know that they should categorize by game the images they upload. I had an idea to create a template based off of {{aboutfile-reminder}}: User:Wildgoosespeeder/Template:ImageCategorization-reminder. Good idea? You can make edits if you feel it needs to be tweaked. The above is a test and not a real warning (obviously). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:02, 24 August 2016 (EDT)

It should be given a simpler name, such as {{category-reminder}}. I do think this issue happens often enough to warrant a pre-written template to transclude on user talk pages. But there are many other common misteps that users take, for example using the word "you" in articles, or failing to italicize game titles. I like your template, but I'm afraid that this will set a precedent to continue creating more and more pre-loaded reminder messages. {{aboutfile-reminder}} was created because it was very time consuming to explain to users that what they were doing is actually a problem, and explaining on removing unnecessary parts. Plus, it standardizes the message that users can just remove the aboutfile coding if they don't want to use it. Different users may impose different preferences to users on this: some users could say "you gotta use the template correctly, or else", and others could say "please format the template correctly if you would like to use it, but if not just remove it".
Categorizing images by game is mandatory, and therefore there is little need to standardize any message. But I understand the time that's consumed telling users off about it individually. To reiterate I'm just concerned that together with aboutfile-reminder, it will set an example to create many other pre-written reminders. Although, we could say that these standard file uploading reminders are where we draw the line. Issues with users breaking the Manual of Style should be personally written using specific linked examples of where the users have gone wrong.
I will bring your proposed templates to the other members of staff for their opinion. Thanks.
'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 17:42, 24 August 2016 (EDT)
I consider templates for MarioWiki:Image use policy and MarioWiki:Manual of Style two separate issues. I was merely trying to create a template that extends {{aboutfile-reminder}}, which I see as a proper way to handle contents of file pages (not the images themselves), which isn't all that much compared to articles. Writing is a whole different beast of explanation. It may be simpler to create a template that links to the various writing policies and insert an additional parameter to let users know what writing guideline(s) they violated.
--Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:23, 24 August 2016 (EDT)
Another admin agrees that a standardized template message on the issue of categorizing images would be useful. And in my opinion, it should be called "category-reminder". Having "image" becomes cumbersome, and this would be the only reminder template for categories which would be created: I think the the only pre-loaded reminders which should be created are those which concern the "content" field on the upload page (other image-related stuff like correct naming is best referred straight to the policy, and violations of writing guidelines should be written individually, preferably using examples as corrections).
Before the template is created, I'd like to see a proper consensus beyond ourselves and another admin to see if there were further opinions. I encourage you to create a proposal: I'd support it.

Just as a side thing, with Porplemontage (talk)'s help to temporarily remove the category of {{game-screenshot}} and {{game-sprite}}, L151 (talk) and I went through images to insert the missing category. There was a lot missing and it was tedious. So tedious that the project was abandoned. What about updating the instructions on Special:Upload (MediaWiki:Uploadtext) to cover the point of image categorization by game? A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 18:31, 26 August 2016 (EDT)

What went down:

  1. Asked Porplemontage (talk) to remove Category:Game screenshots and Category:Game sprites from their templates.
  2. Some images had used [[Category:Game screenshots]] and [[Category:Game sprites]] explicitly, so those were modified to use the template instead.
  3. Steve purged cache, which forced affected images missing a game image category to go into Special:UncategorizedFiles and nothing was in Category:Game screenshots and Category:Game sprites.
  4. Steve, L151 (talk), and I went through remaining images, although L151 did more than both of us combined.
  5. Steve periodically refreshed the cache to see what remains.
  6. Steve created additional categories for images that didn't fit anywhere else.
  7. Once complete with one copyright tag, we moved onto the next.

At the time, we only got two tags completed and I was mentally exhausted editing those images. There were a couple thousand images to go through. The project was suspended. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:58, 26 August 2016 (EDT)

Mario isn't just limited to video games and TV, which is what the template links to currently. There's categories like movies, comics, websites (Play Nintendo), merchandise, and other things I can't think of that this Wiki documents. There are also system images. The idea I had was to create a category for MediaWiki:Uploadtext and {{imagecategory-reminder}} to link to that makes finding the right, or would Category:MarioWiki images be sufficient (I don't think so)? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 15:27, 11 September 2016 (EDT)
Wouldn't it be a good idea to cover everything instead of just games? I'm not suggesting linking to Category:MarioWiki images from the template. I was thinking of a subcategory of it that houses the "Images by..." categories. The mass majority of Category:Images by type (even before my recent edits) contain Help:License tags. I have a thought that either Category:Images by type be merged with Category:Images by copyright status or Category:Images by type becomes a subcategory of Category:Images by copyright status (I think the ladder makes more sense). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:22, 11 September 2016 (EDT)

Screenshots

Um…, I have a few questions about screenshots. The first is what if someone uploads borderless Paper Mario screenshots from an external website? The second is, some emulators break the boundaries between “screenshots” and “3D renderings.” For examples, N64 screenshots that consists mainly of 3D objects, like this one, exhibits Nintendo's content better when rendered at a higher resolution. The Dolphin emulator even allows the player to enlarge the viewport like this. Are such images considered to be screenshots or 3D renderings, or a “hybrid” between the two? —A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 12:19, 25 August 2016 (EDT)

  1. It is advised to not use an external website for images because there is near-zero quality control. Use with caution. The source you provided is terrible anyways and, at the time, I was replacing those images one by one with clean versions but we had a discussion about screenshots with borders so I lost interest with Paper Mario up until Boo's Mansion.
  2. I think that custom 3D renders can be exempt from the pixel accuracy screenshots thing as long as no HUD elements are present, because emulating at higher resolutions than what a real N64 can do internally has issues with HUD elements being upscaled and filtered improperly (very common with the most commonly used graphics plug-ins)[2]. The angrylion's plug-in does things automatically and reproduces things pixel-accurately as best as it can.

Can I ask something about affiliate site?

Hi Yoshikong! I'm not sure whom I should ask about affiliate site registration, so I'm leaving this message to you. I recently added 'Super Mario Community' as an affiliate site, and I'm wondering if it's okay to just upload the icon and note some information on the site. As the fansite is entirely done in Korean, we've prepared English version of introduction on the webpage. You can find out here: https://supermariokrblog.wordpress.com/ So please check and let me know if the site deserves to remain on the list. Thanks! :) --Jjl0909 (talk) 12:09, 9 September 2016 (EDT)

RE: DK64 bios

No, because I haven't downloaded a Flash player yet, if that is what I need to do. I'll get on it right now and see what I can do.

Edit: I can get the Flash player run successfully, but the bios I find, I can't download them as images. I'll write down the bios ASAP for now though. Area51Guard.png A51 Trooper 17:35, 11 September 2016 (EDT)

While I was unable to find a way to save the bios and whatnot as images and upload them, I did find even more info about the game, including the bios for the worlds, items and even the story. I'll add those bios later when I get the chance to do it. Area51Guard.png A51 Trooper 17:35, 11 September 2016 (EDT)

Paper Jam Enemy stats

A while back, Madbird82 posted some enemy statistic data for the Shiny Paper enemies in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, as well as data of enemies and bosses from the game's Easy Mode. Thing is, other than this spreadsheet Jdaster64 made for most of the enemies, there's no known data regarding the Shiny Paper variants to compare Madbird's data to (even if the S.P. stats are derived from their normal Paper counterparts).
Two months ago, I asked Madbird how they got the stats, but they didn't bother to elaborate beyond just claiming they "know mathematics very well" and it took them "three months to figure everything out". I even asked them if they used certain stat manipulation methods to gather their data, but they never answered back. What do you make of this? --Zootalo (Talk)

some screenshot-related questions

Hello YoshiKong. I'll get my own computer next month and be able to start taking screenshots. Before that I have a few questions to ask:

  1. Wildgoosespeeder mentioned that the some of the screenshots on List of Star Pieces in Paper Mario had issues due to conversion from JPEG and GIF to PNG. Would it be worthwhile to retake them? I'm not sure if it's good to bloat up the file histories for little quality improvement.
  2. If a 640x480 Paper Mario screenshot is of higher quality than a 320x240 one, is it OK to upload a 640x480 one (if it does not break page consistency)?
  3. A lot of Paper Mario screenshots have been uploaded to the wiki and some of them, if compared with the hardware output of the same scene, lack the black borders present in the latter. The problem is that it's not sure if they have been cropped, since many uploaders just state the game name in the source parameter without mentioning where they got their screenshots. (I would guess emulators for most of them, though.) Is there anything that needs to be done to existing screenshots that are borderless in this sense?

Thanks. —A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 09:44, 25 September 2016 (EDT)

Cat:RPG Items

I wanted to get your opinion on the RPG Items - General and RPG Items - Special categories. I find them to be both overly redundant with other games' item categories and overly broad by lumping together entries from SMRPG, the M&L series, and the PM series into one messy category. Still, they've been in place for a long while and they were created by an admin, so I didn't want to start mass-removing them or doing anything drastic before I heard from someone else. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 16:51, 28 September 2016 (EDT)

Having them as a parent category isn't a bad idea, but I'm not sure if that would be completely consistent with the other broad categories for the RPGs, such as Paper Mario Series and its subcategories or Mario & Luigi Series and its subcategories. Assuming that each game gets an item category, all of them would probably funnel into a broader category within that series, such as Category:Paper Mario Series Items. Would these parent categories then lead into the RPG Item categories? It just seems unwieldy and not all that necessary.
As for Beanbean Kingdom, I kept that mostly for posterity but after having thought about it for a long while, I'm largely in favour of getting rid of it. I was thinking that maybe it could be retooled for another purpose, but honestly I haven't been able to come up with anything. I've sort-of lumped it in with Category:Beanish, which is vague about what it's supposed to cover and has been used for a variety of characters, enemies, and items in Superstar Saga: there's something of potential in them, but I can't think of what that may be. Any thoughts on that? Hello, I'm Time Turner. 17:47, 1 October 2016 (EDT)
The first thing that actually came to mind for me was whether or not other genres should receive such a treatment. The Mario series hasn't dived too deeply into anything beyond the platformer, but if we're going forward with a parent RPG category, then having a similar category for the platformers, sports, party, puzzle, and others shouldn't be too out of the question. Of course, the items wouldn't be the only ones to have a category: there are plenty of characters, bosses, enemies, locations, and much more that should also get such a category if this idea continues forward. And this would also apply to other genres, and soon enough we'll have an entire new branch to add to the example tree. Or maybe we could save ourselves the headache by getting rid of these two and simply directing each category to the main categories instead of completely reorganizing the system for categories.
I do agree that Beanish would work better as a species category instead of an awkward catch-all (although I'm not sure if the name is official...), but why do you think Beanish characters from later games shouldn't use the category? Hello, I'm Time Turner. 19:39, 1 October 2016 (EDT)
Ah, sorry for misreading that. Also, don't think too deeply about the paragraph I wrote above, that was just for a punchline at the end. The categories would cause too much confusion if we followed the logical path that would ensue after properly implementing them, so I'm in favor of scrapping them. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 19:53, 1 October 2016 (EDT)

1. Upload a new file, and immediatelly tag the old one for deletion.

about maps

Hi—I took a look at your "Image use policy" WIP and it forbade maps with unofficial annotations. Would this image (or this) have delete-request? (In addition it is also a refactor of the game elements, and the artist, Peardian, told me via email that they were not happy to see their work posted here with the credit part cropped out anyway.) A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 09:22, 4 October 2016 (EDT)

(1) Oh sorry, I overlooked the header. Well which license tag should these two maps have? They are currently tagged {{game-screenshot}} but the viewport got more drastically stretched than File:PMTTYD Rogueport Inn.png...
(2) By the way, I'm not sure where to report this but The 'Shroom:Issue 112/Pipe Plaza#The 'Shroom Report refers to the late Walkazo's brother as {{User|Pantaro}}. He's called Pantaro Paratroopa (talk) on this wiki so these are actually red links in disguise.
(3) While we're at it, there are also these PMTTYD screenshots that have the black borders removed. In contrast with the black borders in Paper Mario's which are hardly-noticeable on real console, the black borders in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door are part of the cutscene effect and thus part of the "content". Cropping them out results in images that look like this (awfully "bald" in my opinion):
A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 10:20, 4 October 2016 (EDT)
And sometimes a 3D render is produced by the method of taking a screenshot and cropping the background. This gives satisfactory results most of the time, but sometimes the object is transparent so the background sneaks in. File:Tweester.gif File:Transparent.png Are these still considered 3D renders or rather screenshots? -- A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 21:28, 4 October 2016 (EDT)

How is File:SPM Mega Peach.png very different from File:Mega Peach.PNG? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:46, 14 October 2016 (EDT)

But the image is about Mega Peach and what she looks like when the Mega Star is touched. A different background and enemies has little relevance to the subject as this transform can happen anywhere there is a Mega Star. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:57, 14 October 2016 (EDT)
That's why there is a compromise where we get one screenshot and/or sprite per game for each character involved. In the case of Mega Mario, the five screenshots of what characters look like (also considering where the Mega Star appeared so that way the backgrounds are different for variety and documenting you can find them there as well) is sufficient. Any more and that is overkill. The only reason I uploaded a replacement is just in case someone saw value in an image and had a significant reason why it should be kept. There isn't anything significantly lost if one of the two are kept. I'll just tag with {{delete-request}}. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 20:38, 14 October 2016 (EDT)

Advice?

I would like some advice in editing this article: Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack.
1. If you look at the article, you'll see information about the appearance of the discs and case in the first section. Should this be moved to a section like "Appearance" or "Physical Description"?
2. The "Description" section has badly written sentences that I'm not even sure should be in the article at all. Do you think I should rewrite them, or remove them entirely?
--Luigi 64DD.png (talk · edits) 20:28, 17 October 2016 (EDT) Thanks for the advice! I'll probably make the edits later today. RE: Ghost Valley 3

I have a few remedies to help you steer away from the crippling keyboard layout.

  • Do you have a Wii Remote, Wii Classic Controller, Wii U Pro Controller, Xbox 360 wired controller (USB), or Xbox One Controller hooked up with micro USB (no batteries inserted)? If so, you can use that to remap the input settings for the emulator. The Nintendo controllers require Bluetooth sync-ups with your computer, however.
  • Do you have a Wii (or vWii of Wii U) or 3DS? If so, proceed with homebrew to get the screenshots. Wii and 3DS homebrew.

Ultimately, I can do it, just thought I let you know how to make it easier for yourself. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:06, 20 October 2016 (EDT)

I use the Xbox 360 wired controller and Xbox One micro USB connection myself. I haven't tried the Nintendo controller Bluetooth sync-up method because I don't have a dongle (built-in, PCI/PCIe, or USB) to test it but I know that you can use it to get a sync that isn't with a Wii or Wii U. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 20:09, 20 October 2016 (EDT)

about the image category reminder stuff

Hi. If the instructions on {{imagecategory-reminder}} is correct, do you think it's a good idea to modify MediaWiki:Common.js so that the default text of Special:Upload looks something like

|5=Other versions (use file link)

Also, this is not related to the topic, but when I got a username rename, my signature's messed up. Why is that? Yoshi, in Super Mario Maker (as a Mystery Mushroom character) SuperYoshi1234 Long list of contributions. Get ready to be bored... Reply 01:23, 27 October 2016 (EDT)

Template

Where did I go wrong while editing {{Pitenemy}}? I wasn't trying to break it, I was just trying to add a related section which was unintentionally removed after this proposal. Is there a way to make it appear without breaking the template by accident? A personal signature image for me! The RPG Gamer (talk) (edits) Christmasmario.jpg 17:53, 27 October 2016 (EDT)

Jesus christ, some people can go really over and beyond when it comes to warring images about how rendered models actually look compared to how the users want them to look. And I don't know why it's only Daisy that has this obsessiveness over the detail. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 18:57, 28 October 2016 (EDT)

(from Baby Luigi's talk page)
Assuming each revision was about 2.5 megabites[sic], that's a huge 50 mb worth of useless revisions.

Pointing out that "deleting" them with MediaWiki doesn't actually delete them. It just puts them into the server equivalent of a "recycle bin" so that they can be undeleted later. They're still taking up server space. - Reboot (talk) 22:21, 28 October 2016 (EDT)

Three things about that. One, it makes the file history more manageable. Two, if we really want to rid the wasted space on the files, Porplemontage (talk) has this option. Three, makes me wonder why MediaWiki duplicates files upon reversion. A simple file selector would be way more efficient and less wasteful of server resources. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 22:47, 28 October 2016 (EDT)
Reboot, we're not deleting them to save space (though it sucks to know that we're *not* freeing up space. As Wildgoosespeeder said, the history of upload warring doesn't show any value, so we might as well remove them so the page doesn't load a million of these images. Mario (Santa)'s map icon from Mario Kart Tour Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 23:30, 28 October 2016 (EDT)

Actually Reboot, the deletion backlog may be cleared periodically. For example, no page deleted before 2013 can be restored. So there is some point to clearing revisions: the space will free up eventually.

Took care of the revisions, thanks. Delete old versions of personal image

Hi YoshiKong Shokora could you please delete a few old versions on my personal image File:Kenny James.jpg I uploaded a png version of the new one and it is currently being used on the page so could you please delete all versions except versions as of April 7 2008, March 22 2016, October 6 2016, October 9 2016 and the current one. The file history is too overhauled so could you please delete them, thanks and have a nice day. :) A personal signature image for me! Okay, done. But I'm not deleting the original upload credits: I don't like how you've tried to claim all the image logs on the Kenny James article. There was absolutely no need to replace the studio picture with your own separate upload. I've deleted the duplicate PNG version that you uploaded, and restored all the images according to who uploaded them originally. Please think more carefully about that next time. No, the PNG image was just a slightly blown version of the original JPG: the preferred original resolution (i.e. the version that Kenny James sent through the staff e-mail) is what L151 has uploaded at File:Kenny James.jpg. And, why can't you use the one you uploaded on your userpage? It's identical to the one that you claimed as a personal image. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 13:26, 7 November 2016 (EST)

Sure, I'll go do that soon. The issue is that the latest revision cannot be deleted: so unless a new revision is uploaded, that last comment on the logs can't be deleted. I've just tried to look for a higher quality version to reupload, but it looks like the European press site doesn't host any Double Dash assets anymore (I'm very sure that they used to). Question

I feel like I should already know this, but is there supposed to be only one link to a given subject (i.e., Luigi) in the entirety of an article, or can there be another link to the same subject in separate sections of an article? I know this is not allowed: "Luigi talked to Mario, who gave him some spaghetti. Luigi was ecstatic." But what about separate sections? Or one link being in a table and the other being in the main text?

Images; What to Keep and What can be Safe for Deletion

I have noticed quite a differing style between you and I when it comes to file management. One notable instance is File:Mega Peach.PNG and File:SPM Mega Peach.png. Another instance would be Goronto. I still feel one of those Mega Peach images could be safely canned. If you want to understand my management style, I tend to gravitate towards having images that show something significant or major rather than just having any image that shows a minor difference. If there is anything that I am missing with how you view images should be preserved, just let me know. I wish to understand your reasoning in general as I just don't get it with those specific cases. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:15, 15 November 2016 (EST)

I know that you have User:Shokora/MarioWiki:Image Use Policy in the works and one such proposed change is crops that aren't clean isolations (User:Shokora/MarioWiki:Image Use Policy#Cropping and separating sections of a complete artwork). What are your thoughts on File:Toadiko.png and File:ToadikoPeachToadbert.png existing together? I don't find the crop necessary and the crop is frowned upon by many editors but is not officially policy as far as I can tell. Saying Toadiko to the left of Peach seems sufficient to me as a caption for Toadiko using the full picture. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 03:57, 16 November 2016 (EST)

I just uploaded it because there was no official artwork of her (apart from the terrible fanart of her but that's besides the point). And especially since we don't upload fan art. That small group image is acceptable: we don't need a cropped version. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 07:38, 16 November 2016 (EST)
I find it quite odd that Toadiko doesn't have any official artwork available to use. Does a Prima Games guide or similar exist with Toadiko art? Toadbert and Kylie Koopa get artwork but not Toadiko? When I was on the quest to replace File:Partners01.GIF with File:MLPiT Toadiko Vim Extraction Discovery.png, I didn't come across Kylie Koopa. The point I am trying to make is that it's not like Toadiko is a character very late or very deep into the narrative like Gloomtail or the Shadow Queen. She is seen very early on and Nintendo tends to have artwork available for those kind of characters.

I think that applies to only current personal images and not images that were designed for main articles or gallery pages, only to then be questioned if they should be tagged with {{personal-file}} once they have no more use on those kinds of pages. I have already replied to The RPG Gamer (talk) on his talk page (he asked me first before talking to you). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 03:03, 17 November 2016 (EST)

Static or Animated

Does File:GlowingSPMTYD.gif need to be animated or would it be sufficient to have a static screenshot with the flashing and Peach with her mouth wide open as the treasure chest is open? We also have File:BeldamDisguised.png. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 15:39, 16 November 2016 (EST)

A higher quality, static image would be preferred for a mainspace article. However, it only appears on the game's gallery at the moment. So there's no pressing need for a static version. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 15:59, 16 November 2016 (EST)
But it would be OK to get it to be a static PNG, right, regardless of it being only in the gallery? I could repurpose the image to be part of Beldam, Princess Peach, Rogueport, or Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:12, 16 November 2016 (EST)

Template

I have an idea for a template. All of the articles about forms refer to Mario. For example, Fire Mario is not Fire Form. While that makes sense, since Mario is the titular protagonist of the series, I still think it would be a good idea to have a template that explains that it is a form used by characters other than Mario and and lists the other characters who have used it. For example, the template on Fire Mario would look something like this.

This article is about a form used by character(s) other than Mario. The character(s) who have used it are: Luigi, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, Princess Peach, Toad and Rosalina.

What do you think? Is this a good idea?

Well, I finished the table, but now what do we do with all the images that went unused? Should I mark them all up for deletion? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:59, 28 November 2016 (EST)

Looks good to me, nice one. Did you still want to link to SmashWiki's complete article at the top of the section? I'll take care of the deletions: images from older games showing the same, identical form will be replaced by the newer game image (if it doesn't have another use elsewhere). 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 17:09, 28 November 2016 (EST)
Oh, yeah, I forgot about the link. I'll add that. Some of the original images are used elsewhere, but I guess I'll leave that up to you :) Thanks! Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:12, 28 November 2016 (EST)

Many File Moves

There seems to be many file moves, specifically done by Eldritchdraaks, that produced file redirects and should be deleted. I don't think it is worth tagging each and every one of them with {{delete}}. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:32, 30 November 2016 (EST)

These redirects should not be deleted just yet, because the file name links have not been updated for each article. If we're going to delete them, it's going to be far more difficult to track broken files. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 19:49, 30 November 2016 (EST)
It's too bad that pages aren't automatically updated when a move takes place. It could be a Special:RecentChanges problem if it were a feature, but MediaWiki could log such automatic edits differently or just extend the log notes:
[date] [user] (talk | contribs) moved page [old page name] to [new page name] and auto-edited [pages] ([reason]) (revert)
--Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 03:32, 1 December 2016 (EST)
I don't think it's possible theoretically. The most you can do is text substitution. If a page involves template expansions like {{a|Boo}}Boo, [[Boo]] and you move Boo, it would be impossible to update the link without altering the text of the article. Getting the 99% right is possible, though.--A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 05:05, 1 December 2016 (EST)
I started taking care of the redirects, while also updating enemy pages and the sort, but I needed to stop and go to bed. Even right now, I'm supposed to be asleep. --EldritchdraaksSig1.pngEldritchdraaksSig2.png 06:28, 1 December 2016 (EST)

I've seen ordinary users such as Wildgoosespeeder performing text replacement bots: how is this done exactly? I can't spot anythings like it at the special pages. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 16:54, 2 December 2016 (EST)

Thanks to Porplemontage (talk) a few months back, he showed me Pywikibot. That is how the text replacements occurred. I also used it to batch upload these. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 22:30, 4 December 2016 (EST)

Disturbing Userpage

I'm a bit disturbed by the userpage of LTIan (talk). It looks like he hates the Super Mario Wiki, yet he still has an account here. Someone needs to explain to him that the strict rules are all there for good reasons and that if he disagrees, this is the wrong place to be. If he thinks the Super Mario Wikia is better (I greatly disagree. That place has terrible coverage), he ought to have an account there and not here. Should I explain to him, or would it be better if you or another member of the Wiki staff did it? Or is it an issue at all? I at first thought he could say whatever he wanted on his userpage, but then I saw that his old userpage was just a few words saying how he hated this wiki and that that wasn't OK, so I thought I should ask about this.
Ultimate Mr. L without the emblem behind him (for my signature) Ultimate Mr. L (Talk-Contribs-Stats) 13:11, 2 December 2016 (EST)

He was blocked due to him putting the remaining 6 Koopalings on Paper Mario: Color Splash when Morton Koopa was the only one confirmed. After being block, he edited his user page to reflect that it didn't seem fair to him as Nintendo said that all Koopalings would be in the game. He was later banned for a little bit longer due to him editing again during the block. I hope this information helps. Red Yoshi in a construction hat walking Yoshi the SSM (talk) 13:26, 2 December 2016 (EST)
I'm normally not against criticism of this site; hell I allowed it before because I didn't want to censor opposing opinions, but what I think that LTIan had posted is incredibly childish and it possibly violates Userspace standards (possibly the "Flaming or defamation of other users", except insulting the community as a whole rather than individual users). It encourages disruption and negativity in this site and that's always a no-no especially when it comes to being a contribution and quality user that we want. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 14:00, 2 December 2016 (EST)
What did I ever do to any of you? :( --LTIan (talk) 14:35, 2 December 2016 (EST)
I say he should be allowed to say that the Wikia version is much better, although many would disagree with him. I wouldn't go that far Baby Luigi (talk). I hope that Porplemontage (talk)'s MarioWiki isn't an echo chamber filled with members to keep supporting such a mindset. As long as LTIan (talk) is not vandalizing pages saying that the Wikia is better, his user page should remain in its current condition. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:23, 2 December 2016 (EST)
I've said that I'm not against people saying other websites than MarioWiki are better, nor should they be stifled for their opinions, and I also think people should be allowed to express themselves. To an extent. What LTIan has posted on his userpage is very confrontational, and he's inviting people to get on the defensive. There's stating opinions, and there's being a dick about opinions to get a negative reaction out of users, and I think LTIan is in the latter category and that's what he intended by posting Mario Wikia is better than World -1 or whatever. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 17:30, 2 December 2016 (EST)
An adult mindset would say to ignore it and move on. It's an opinion that can be expressed that ultimately doesn't matter much. As they say, don't feed the trolls because they will keep doing it for as long as it gets a reaction. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 17:38, 2 December 2016 (EST)

Minor edit mistakes

What should I do if I forget to mark an edit as minor before saving the changes or I accidentally mark a major edit as minor?
Luigi 64DD.png (talk · edits) 15:46, 5 December 2016 (EST)

Don't worry too much if you forget to mark an edit every now and then: it can't be corrected after you save the page, so the best thing to do is to just remember for next time. And I suggest that you check out this if you haven't already. Thanks. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 16:02, 5 December 2016 (EST)

Long Userpage

Are long userpages discouraged? I'm asking because mine is a bit lengthy compared to others, but that might just be because I have more ideas of what to place there or because I spend more time on it.
Ultimate Mr. L without the emblem behind him (for my signature) Ultimate Mr. L (Talk-Contribs-Stats) 16:43, 7 December 2016 (EST)

As long as you're following the policy on userspace content (acceptable number of embedded YouTube videos, keeping irrelevant content to a reasonable amount, etc.), then a lengthly userpage shouldn't be a problem. As long as you're keeping your focus on the wiki's articles (as you are), then you shouldn't have to worry about continuing to add content to your userpage. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 16:15, 8 December 2016 (EST)
OK, thanks. And yes, my mainspace percentage went up a ways when I started removing conjecturaltext from the headers in Super Mario Galaxy articles. It's amazing that that proposal isn't too recent, yet most of the articles still have conjecturaltext in the headers.

"related species" in PIT enemy boxes

The existing enemy boxes for Partners in Time have an entry that lists any related species. For example, the enemy box for Baby Bowser lists "Bowser" as a related species. These information are not present in the bestiary which I am replacing the enemyboxes with via transclusion. Do you think it necessary to preserve those entries? --A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 09:14, 8 December 2016 (EST)

I really do not think it's necessary. Notable enemy/character pages should already serve that purpose using the {{character infobox}} For example, as Princess Shroob and Petey Piranha does. For less notable enemies with shorter articles, such as Lethal Bob-omb, the related/derived species should be described within the paragraphs. Otherwise, there would be too much information crossing over between {{character infobox}} and the bestiary infoboxes. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 16:15, 8 December 2016 (EST)

SMW Artwork Uploads

I know you are gradually working on uploading replacements of SMW artwork and deleting the old artwork as some of your uploads aren't integrated yet. Just one thing to note as you are doing that, some artwork for SMW is shared with SMB3, such as File:Fire Mario SMB3.jpg/File:SMW Fire Mario.jpg can be replaced with File:SMW Art - Fire Mario.png. I only made that upload part of article and gallery pages out of your several recent uploads just as the example. To follow MarioWiki:Courtesy, I'm only going to do that one and leave the rest up to you. Just a heads up why suddenly one upload was already integrated as that is the reason why. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 00:46, 9 December 2016 (EST)

Thanks for the heads-up: I didn't realize that the artwork had already been used for SMB3. I will get to the rest when I have another few hours to myself. Oh, and thanks for creating the Keep Walking article. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 11:24, 9 December 2016 (EST)

Paper Jam paper sprites

Since Paper Jam reused the assets from Dream Team and Sticker Star, making all the sprites exactly the same from those respective games, yet the paper sprites in Paper Jam have a white outline, would it be alright to upload the Sticker Star sprites, but add a white stroke to them?--EldritchdraaksSig1.pngEldritchdraaksSig2.png 12:36, 9 December 2016 (EST)

I already went ahead with this since I wasn't getting any response from anyone. It's a major improvement for the Paper Jam bestiary.--EldritchdraaksSig1.pngEldritchdraaksSig2.png 23:35, 10 December 2016 (EST)
According to User:Mario_jc, these images will have delete-request for reasons I perfectly understand. However, I need to know if there's anyway around this in order to keep these sprites up? --EldritchdraaksSig1.pngEldritchdraaksSig2.png 10:35, 12 December 2016 (EST)
First, may I ask you to try and be more patient about these things? You should have waited for a response from either Mario jc or myself, before going ahead and uploading those sprites. This should have been asked after the sprites were uploaded. So don't get touchy about your work getting reverted. Also, you didn't even allow 20 minutes for Mario jc to respond to your question about making a proposal to keep the sprites, before you came up and asked me a similar question... cool your jets. adding foreign names

Hi. I've got the Chinese version of Super Mario 64 DS localized by iQue. When adding the Chinese names to this wiki, can a screenshot taken from the game be cited as a source? (Unfortunately the names for the individual stars cannot be encompassed in a single screenshot.) --A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 04:28, 11 December 2016 (EST)

Sure, linking to that course list image (preferably using "Media:" instead of "File:) within the reference should be fine. If you felt that individual star names would be too many screenshots to upload, then it should be fine to just plainly reference the iQue localization. By the way, would you be interested in creating an iQue article, by any chance? 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 07:47, 12 December 2016 (EST)
What would the iQue article contain? I don't think I'll be able to do a better (or equally good) job than the Wikipedia article. Perhaps a reference work (like a list of the consoles and localized games) will suffice? --A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 00:47, 14 December 2016 (EST)
Don't worry about competing with Wikipedia's article. Including a list of Mario localized games and consoles on the article would be great: the presentation could be similar to the AlphaDream article, with a small introduction, history and then listing the releases through a table. {{character infobox}}

Hello. For subjects with no artwork available (like Dane T.), would it be better to put a sprite or a screenshot in the character infobox if both are available? --A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 04:36, 26 December 2016 (EST)

Good question. A quality sprite should be more appropriate in that case. But when sprites are too small to be seen properly at the native size (such as those seen in Super Mario Land), then a screenshot might be better for the infobox, and the sprite shown elsewhere on the article instead. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 07:20, 26 December 2016 (EST)
Thanks! By the way, the {{location infobox}} has a width parameter to keep images at native size, but intended only to be used when the image is less than 250px. Can we use it for screenshots that are 256px wide when it means pixel-perfect display of the screen, like those of Bowser's Inside Story? --A gossip-loving Toad (Talk) 07:31, 26 December 2016 (EST)

Block Template

Feel free to edit (not transcluded but copied code):

Block.svg
Shokora has been blocked indefinitely from editing the Super Mario Wiki.
See the block log and block time remaining.

Transclusion test:
Special:BlockList/Brandondorf9999

{{block}}, I feel something is missing like time remaining until the block has expired. Special:BlockList/Brandondorf9999 filters results for Brandondorf9999 (talk) instead of showing every block instated (Special:BlockList). I was thinking of implementing that into the template. Two issues. One, it's protected. Two, how to do it so it still looks nice? Code: [[Special:BlockList/{{BASEPAGENAME}}]] This might be useful for those affected by temporary blocks eager to get back to editing (hopefully learned a lesson and won't continue to do the bad behaviors that got them blocked). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 22:42, 29 December 2016 (EST)

If I may ask a somewhat-related question: Do anonymous users receive a block template? They don't receive reminders or warnings and the block template appears to be grouped with those. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 22:46, 29 December 2016 (EST)

I understand the idea, but I'd need to see the complete code to understand how the time remaining would be displayed. And no, anonymous edits should ideally not receive the block template, just like how we don't issue any warning templates to them. It's too much bother to add them, and with the number of IPs given temporary bans, remembering to take them down would be a chore. And it can get tricky with things like range-blocking multiple IPs. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 20:44, 30 December 2016 (EST)

I think a link will be the way to go because transcluding isn't working. You can transclude special pages (see MarioWiki:Administrators for an example), but this special page is preventing it. It would probably go nicely next to block log (left or right with a - or ). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 21:52, 30 December 2016 (EST)
I don't think it's a bad idea. But I'd prefer if some magic words prevented the "time remaining" from appearing if the user was blocked indefinitely (i.e. either specified as the "length" parameter, or when no "length" parameter is entered at all). 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 17:32, 31 December 2016 (EST)
I don't see how that would be necessary. One could click to see if the indefinite block is legitimate and not someone just spamming {{block}} or if someone made a mistake with how to use {{block}}. However, it can be easily done if the length parameter is specified with the help of Parser Functions (ie {{#if:{{{length|}}}| and [[Special:BlockList/{{BASEPAGENAME}}|block time remaining]]}}). --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 18:43, 31 December 2016 (EST)
I mean, "time remaining" wouldn't need to be displayed if the user was blocked indefinitely. And the regular block log may still tell you whether the template was legitimately placed or not. Anyway, if your proposed coding is ready, feel free to take this to a talk page proposal. 'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 19:02, 31 December 2016 (EST)
I don't think a proposal would be necessary for such a small change. I was hoping for an admin to apply the changes because it is a protected template. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 19:38, 31 December 2016 (EST)
