Crosshair Cranky is a mini-game mode exclusively appearing in the Game Boy Color version of Donkey Kong Country. Cranky is named in the title, though he does not appear anywhere within the mode.

Gameplay[edit]

Donkey Kong starts from the position of Kongo Jungle on the Donkey Kong Island map, except it is inaccessible. The only other places are along near the shore of Donkey Kong Island, and none of them can be accessed in the main game at all. The mode has a two-player equivalent where the second player is represented by a Diddy with a blue cap, both of whom compete to complete every stage first.[1] Every stage involves shooting coconuts at targets, which are usually Kremlings. Each time a coconut is fired, a section of the coconut icon in the center is filled, going in clockwise order from top left to bottom right. Once four coconuts have been used, the player has to reload manually before they can shoot more. A mood icon of Donkey Kong is at the bottom left, showing him as happy by default, though his mood worsens each time a mistake is made, such as failing to hit a Kremling. If Donkey Kong makes four mistakes, he loses. Every stage has a counter set to a certain number, which decreases gradually if the objective is met, usually being when a Kremling is shot. When the counter reaches zero, Donkey Kong wins, and the game progress is saved.

The stages are as follows:

Name Summary
DKC GBC Kremlings and Kongs.png
Kremlings and Kongs
The basic goal is to fire coconuts at any Kremlings but not the Kongs.[2] The stage is set in a temple, so it plays the "Voices of the Temple" theme. Fifty Kremlings have to be shot at to stop them from taking the Bananas,[3] while avoiding to shoot Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong as they also jump on the Bananas. If Donkey Kong misses too many Kremlings or hits too many Kongs, he loses.
Crosshair Cranky Barrel O' Kremlings
Barrel o' Kremlings
The object is to hit Kremlings, though missing too many results in a loss.[4] The counter starts at 100,[5] decreasing by one, two, and five units by hitting green, blue, and red Kremlings, respectively. This stage is heavily based on Kremling Kosh! from Donkey Kong 64. The untitled forest theme plays.
DKC GBC Kremling Krackdown.png
Kremling Krackdown
Kremlings have to be hit again to stop them from stealing the Banana Bunches.[6] There are 70 Kremlings to shoot,[7] and since no Kongs appear, the stage is simpler than Kremlings and Kongs. The stage takes place in a jungle environment, so "DK Island Swing" plays in the background.
DKC GBC Buddies Beware.png
Buddies Beware
The player has to plug holes with coconuts to help buddies get across safely.[8] There are twenty-five buddies (consisting of Expressos, Rambis, and Winkys) to help cross two holes over each of the three pathways,[9] going from top to bottom. The buddies are always chased by big Gnawtys, which have no gameplay purpose. If too many buddies fall into the holes, the player loses. Only two coconuts can be used before the player has to reload, unlike other stages. A coconut patches a hole only up until the buddy crosses it. The stage is comparable to Peril Path Panic! from Donkey Kong 64, though it takes place in a jungle area and plays DK Island Swing like the previous stage.
DKC GBC Wanted.png
Wanted
The player has to shoot at the requested Kremling specifically.[10] The stage is set up similarly to Barrel o' Kremlings, mainly because the Kremlings are also in barrels, and the counter starts at 70.[11] The stage begins with the area darkening and either a red, a blue, or a green Kremling peeking out of a barrel; this is the Kremling that has to be fired at amongst the others that also appear from the barrels when the area brightens. There are purple and gray Kremlings, though neither is programmed to ever be one of the targets.[citation needed] Later on, a few Kremlings are wanted at once, increasing the difficulty. If the player shoots an incorrect Kremling four times or misses the targets too much, they lose. The stage takes place in a dark area and plays the "Cave Dweller Concert" theme.
DKC GBC Galleon Gunner.png
Galleon Gunner
The only stage without an intro,[12] Galleon Gunner involves firing coconuts at the six cannons on the side of Gangplank Galleon, and it also has its namesake theme as the background music. King K. Rool can be seen on-board, controlling the cannons to come out and retract back into the ship. The counter is set to 36 and decreases by one each time the player hits a cannon out. After a cannon is shot, it goes back into the ship. Each cannon takes six hits to completely destroy. If the player takes four hits, they lose. Once every cannon is destroyed, the player wins, and an animation is shown of K. Rool jumping around the ship angrily.
