The players must ride through a waterway, resembling stages where Plessie appears in ''[[Super Mario 3D World]]'', and collect the coins that spawn throughout the path until they reach the island at the end. The solo player rides Plessie, which can bump other players away with greater force. The opposing team rides on water scooters that allow them to collect coins further away from eachother with ease. In case any of the players fall, they'll respawn at the back after 2 seconds have passed.

Like other coin-collecting minigames, Income Stream does not have a victor in Mario Party mode—instead, the objective is simply to collect as many coins as possible, with all collected coins being rewarded to their respective players upon the minigame's end. In other game modes in the [[Minigame Bay]], however, the player with the most coins is considered to be victorious.
