Splunkins[1] are sentient pumpkin enemies with green feet that appeared in New Super Mario Bros. Their name is likely a pun on "spelunking" and "punkin," which is slang for "pumpkin," given they are based on jack-o-lanterns. Splunkins are encountered in World 3-Ghost House, World 5-Ghost House, World 7-Ghost House, and World 8-1. They walk left and right in a similar fashion of a Goomba's movements, and if a Splunkin get stomped on. it cracks slightly, turns red and moves faster. If a Splunkin is stomped again, it explodes into pumpkin guts and is defeated because Splunkins take 2 jumps to be eliminated. A Splunkin can also be 1-shot taken out from either a Ground Pound or a fireball.
