MoleHunt DreamTeam.png

Mole Hunt is a minigame in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. It is run by an old Shelltop in a quiet area of Driftwood Shore. It costs 10 coins to play. The old man forces Mario and Luigi to play the first two times, gating off story progression until the player wins. These required plays happen at two different points in the story, between which Mole Hunt is unavailable because the old man is improving the game. After the second game, Mole Hunt can be played whenever the player chooses.

In this minigame, Mario and Luigi have one minute to use the Mole Mario technique to dig up hermit crabs with metallic-colored shells. They are under the sand, so Mario has to pop up from the ground while in the same space as a crab to bring it out. Bronze shells are worth ten points and move the slowest, silver shells are worth twenty points and move at a moderate pace, and gold shells are worth forty points and move the fastest. All of the hermit crabs have a set movement pattern which Mario and Luigi can use to their advantage. However, there is some randomness regarding which movement patterns appear during a game.

There are also red blocks with a burst pattern on them, which occasionally appear in set locations. Hitting them either with a hammer or via Mole Mario sends out a shockwave, similarly to a POW Block, that unearths all nearby hermit crabs. If Mario is underground, it also causes him to pop back up.

To win the first mandatory game, the player to obtain two hundred thirty points. For the second game, the goal is two hundred fifty points. In all subsequent plays, there is not a target score but the intent is to beat their best record. (This record ignores scores received in the prior mandatory games.)
