Birds[1][2] are avian creatures that Wario commonly encounters during his adventures in the Wario Land series, specifically in Wario Land II and Wario Land 3. The appearance of the birds changes between the two installments, but their function is very similar. They attack Wario by charging at him.
History[edit]
Wario Land II[edit]
Birds appearing in Wario Land II have slim, torpedo-like bodies, and are light-blue with a reddish-orange beak in the Game Boy Color-enhanced version. When Wario approaches them, they charge at him in a straight line. When they hit Wario, he will lose some of his coins and be thrown back. Birds can be defeated by jumping on their heads and sometimes Wario has to take advantage of this, using them as stepping stones to reach higher locations. Unlike other enemies, birds respawn when the screen is not focused on their original spot.
It appears that birds are regular animals in this game, rather than members of the Black Sugar Gang.
Wario Land 3[edit]
Birds with a different appearance can be found in Wario Land 3 as well. They are more pudgy in this installment and they come in blue and orange. Like in the previous game, they charge at Wario if he is in front or behind them, turning around if he is behind. If hit, blue birds cause Wario to be stunned and knocked backwards, while orange ones cause Wario to be Crazy Wario. If Wario is hit by a bird, it will fly back to its original position, but if he dodges a rushing bird, it will keep going without stopping, though it will return to position if their original position is off-screen. With the exception of the beak, the bird is vulnerable to most forms of attack. The orange birds only appear in The Grasslands, where there are six of them in the level, while the blue birds appear in more levels.
Blue birds appear in the following levels, in the following quantities:
- Out of the Woods (9)
- The Tidal Coast (8)
- Cave of Flames (4)
- Above the Clouds (18)
- The Frigid Sea (4)
- Forest of Fear (7)
