The Bonus Chance (also named bonus game, Bonus Stage,[1] Slot Machine,[2] and Slot Game[3]) is a minigame introduced in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2. It is played at the end of every level, provided Mario or another character has collected at least one coin in Subspace during its first two visits. If they end the course with no coins collected, the Bonus Chance screen displays, but the game is immediately skipped.

In Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2, the coin counter is displayed in hexadecimal. When the player has more than nine coins, letters from A to F are used instead. In Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, there are four possible symbols: Cherry, Snifit, Large Vegetable, and Small Vegetable (the types for the latter two depend on each world and have been replaced with Turnip and Starman in Super Mario Bros. 2). The rewards are:

  • Cherry in left column: +1 life
  • Cherry in left+center columns: +2 lives
  • Cherry in all three columns: +5 lives
  • Any other symbol in all three columns: +1 life

In Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance, the coin counter is now displayed in decimal rather than hexadecimal. The All-Stars version introduced the lucky 7 as the fifth symbol. In the Advance remake, players can now bet more than one coin per spin to earn more extra lives (the number of coins used times the normal number of lives gained). The rewards are:

  • Cherry in left column: +1 life
  • Cherry in left+center columns: +2 lives
  • Cherry in all three columns: +3 lives
  • Cherry in left column and 7 in the other two columns: +1 life and +3 coins (but the extra three coins can be received only once during each play)
  • 7 in all three columns: +10 lives in All-Stars version, +5 lives in Advance version
  • Any other symbol in all three columns: +2 lives

In BS Super Mario USA, the Bonus Chance is also known in the audio drama as the king's casino. Play starts when the time reaches :50 and ends at :53. Any lives gained will not be carried over to the next installment but turned into points after the credits. The coins are converted into 1,000 giga each, which could be spent within the Satellaview. The rewards are:

  • Cherry in left column: +2 lives and +2 coins
  • Cherry in left+center columns: +4 lives and +4 coins
  • Cherry in all three columns: +6 lives and +6 coins
  • Cherry in left column and 7 in the other two columns: +10 lives and +10 coins the first time, afterwards +2 lives and +2 coins
  • 7 in all three columns: +20 lives and +20 coins
  • Any other symbol in all three columns: +4 lives and +4 coins
