Rhythmic Gymnastics Plus is a Plus Event that appears in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The objective of the event is to score the most points by performing moves in time with the music. The playable characters in this event are Mario, Daisy, Rosalina, Sonic, Amy, Blaze and Mii, with Rosalina being unlocked by beating her in the event on the third day of Mario's story in the Road to Rio mode.

Gameplay[edit]

In this event, the player starts by selecting a composition and a difficulty, being able to choose from either the Main Theme from Super Mario Bros. or Wonder World from Sonic Lost World, and expert or normal difficulty. To start their routine, the player must press A Button. Once the routine has started, the player performs moves by inputting the controls indicated onscreen in time with the music, with the inputs being pressing certain buttons, rotating Circle Pad and inputting directions on either Circle Pad or +Control Pad. The better the timing the player inputs with, the more points they will score for the move, and they will receive a better rating, ranging from "Perfect" to "Great", "Good" and then "Miss" for particularly poor timing or failure to input the command at all. If the player manages to repeatedly perform with "Great" and "Perfect" timings, they will perform a combo, which will award them more points. It also fills up the gauge for Golden Time, which gives everything a gold color and awards the player more points. Each composition features different commands and items, with the Super Mario composition featuring only A Button and B Button in the easy difficulty and the addition of the other two buttons for expert, as well as Bullet Bills, which reveal the button required to input after they fly over their marker, and Green Shells, which move along the markers and reveal their buttons as they pass back over them. The Sonic composition uses A Button, B Button, and Y Button for the easy difficulty and adds in X Button for expert, and features Blue Spheres which reveal their button command after a short time and Bumpers which cause the commands to come faster. At the end of the event, the player is told how many of each ranking of move they did, their max combo, overall score and placing in the event.

Compositions[edit]
