As with all world boss fights in Donkey Kong Country, the fight takes place in an arena filled with bananas; and if the player enters with a single Kong, a DK Barrel is instantly broken to ensure they start the fight with both Donkey and Diddy.

Very Gnawty attacks by hopping across the arena, turning only if it reaches the edges or is attacked. To attack, the player must jump on its head, causing it to gasp and then laugh at the camera (during which it is invulnerable). After each hit, Very Gnawty becomes progressively faster, and its leaps get further and higher.

To defeat Very Gnawty, Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong must jump on it five times, at which point it gasps and collapses onto the ground, a Giant Banana falls and the lead Kong celebrates.

In the Game Boy Advance version, Very Gnawty is recolored brown and is larger than it was in the original game. When hit, it will jump to the other side of the arena before continuing its attack. It also turns bright red (to show that it is invulnerable) as it chuckles after taking a hit.
