Presents[1] are collectibles found in Mario vs. Donkey Kong. They are equivalent to the Parasol, Hat, and Bag in Donkey Kong for the Game Boy. As their name implies, they are white presents with red, yellow, or blue ribbons. There are three presents in each level, and they are necessary to collect in order to surpass the level's goal score. The red present is worth 2,000 points, the yellow one is worth 3,000, and the blue one is worth 5,000. During the main worlds, the red present is always in the first half of a level, the blue present is always in the second half, and the yellow present can be in either.
Once all of the presents in a level are collected, the player can play one of two minigames involving the presents. At the beginning of these minigames, the presents are shown to contain either a Donkey Kong head (labeled in-game as "0 UP") that grants no reward, a 1-Up Mushroom, a 2 UP, a 3 UP, or a 5 UP, varying with each individual minigame. The first minigame has an arrow that goes through all three presents, until the player presses the button to slow down the arrow so that it stops on one of the presents, obtaining the item inside. The second minigame has Donkey Kong's fist crushing one present at a time until one remains; the player has to quickly swap the presents and try to protect the desired one to be awarded the item contained within.
