Fly Guys R are stronger blue versions of Fly Guys who appear as enemies in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. In the field, Fly Guys R roam at a high altitude, but will dive down at Mario and Luigi upon sight, and chase them relentlessly for a short period of time. In battle, Fly Guys' R attacks revolve around using Goombas R, and due to this, they spawn Goombas R during battle. Fly Guys R cease to spawn Goombas R after four have been spawned, even if there aren't any more Goombas R on the field. Fly Guys will not spawn any more Goombas R if there's three already in battle.
Unlike Fly Guys that appear in some Mario games, these type of Fly Guys may sometimes be assisted by a Shy Guy Airtub.
Fly Guys R spawn Goombas R, and as such, attack in unison with Goombas R differently depending on whether there are any Goombas R present in the battlefield. If not, the Fly Guy R will fly high into the sky to reappear flying back into the battlefield from the background, now air-lifting a Goomba R in its grip, who it'll drop in line with Mario and Luigi from Mario's left for them both to charge one after another at Mario and Luigi. Dodging the Goomba R requires Mario and Luigi to jump before it hits them. Dodging the Fly Guy R requires Mario and Luigi to not jump into it while trying to dodge the Goomba R, and to just idle as it goes by. This attack takes up the Fly Guy R's attack turn.
If there is, the Fly Guy R will pick up a nearby Goomba R, fly above Mario or Luigi, and bomb the Goomba R on them, which must be countered by smacking the Goomba R into the sand before it lands on the targeted Bro. Regardless of whether the former part of the attack was countered or not, if the Goomba R wasn't defeated due to the counter-attack, it may cause the dizzy ailment, then either run at the targeted Bro. again or if the Goomba R has stars around its head, it will charge into the Bro. who wasn't targeted. This attack takes up the Fly Guy R's attack turn.
A required battle with a trio of Fly Guys R takes place at Pi'illo Blimport.
Fly Guy R Thieves
They are fought as a mini boss during Mario and Luigi's hunt for the Ultibed parts, specifically the Driftwood Jellyfish Sheets. They are the only boss in the game that happen to be identical in both abilities and appearance to other common enemies.
When Mario and Luigi enter the hidden cave on Driftwood Shore to find the Jellyfish Sheets, the Fly Guy R Thieves are heard talking about how they plan to steal the treasure from inside. When Mario and Luigi actually reach the Jellyfish Sheets in the cave, the thieves appear and steal them, running away and knocking over the Mole Game Shelltop nearby in the process.
They're found at Pi'illo Blimport, where the party come up with a plan to distract them and get back the sheets. Prince Dreambert and Starlow loudly talk about a "rumor" involving a birthmark on Bowser, while Mario and Luigi creep around and steal the sheets back from behind the thieves' backs. However, the Fly Guy R Thieves notice the Bros. when they get the Jellyfish Sheets, attacking them. Once they're defeated, they do not appear for the remainder of the adventure.
