Stage 1[1] is the first stage of Virtual Boy Wario Land. It is a dark, rocky cave with various pools of lava, with some of them covered by wooden bridges. It introduces most of the game's basic elements, such as jumping between layers, grabbing and throwing enemies, and finding gate keys and treasure.
Layout[edit]
Following the events of the game's introductory cutscene, the stage begins with Wario falling from above and landing into the ground of a silent, cavernous area with two large stone arches. After he scowls at the camera and jumps out, the stage proper begins. If the introductory cutscene is skipped, Wario will simply appear standing.
The first obstacle to be found are three Ball N' Chains swinging back and forth on the Z-axis, with pits with Spike Traps right before the second and third. After a screen transition, the stage's music starts to play, and the player encounters a ? Block containing a single coin, followed by a horned frog. After another horned frog and a few sets of blocks and ? Blocks (one of them containing a garlic bottle), a coin cloud can be found, with two horned frogs to serve as ammo. A third horned frog can be found standing atop two large blocks, with two blocks and a ? blocks embedded into the ground right after, both of which can be tackled as Bull Wario. Immediately after, two new elements are introduced: exposed lava pits and Bomb-Bats. Past that, and some additional horned toads, the first background area comes into view, with Jump Transporters leading to it. The way forward is obstructed by a wide lava pit, but it can be jumped across by Barging as Bull Wario, allowing the player to skip the background area and obtain the key early.
The background area features various blocks, most of them cracked, as well as three sets of Jump Transporters. The first leads back to the point before the lava pit, the second one leads to a small island in the lava pit holding the stage's key, and the third one leads to the other side of the lava pit. After it comes a bridge of spaced out Empty Blocks under a low ceiling, with several coins and big coins above it. The player can cross the bridge by running across the gaps, or they can skip it by jumping above the low ceiling. Two more Bomb-Bats and a horned frog are located right after, along with a cracked block that reveals a Jump Transporter when broken. Using it leads to a second background area with two sets of blocks and several coins, with the return Jump Transporter being found in the middle block of the right set. Back in the foreground area, a large block is the only thing left before reaching the elevator.
Treasure[edit]
The stage's treasure can be found in the first background area. By breaking the blocks next to the middle Jump Transporter, the player can unveil a door leading to the treasure vault. The treasure resembles a maneki-neko statue, or a tanuki statue in a second playthrough.
Second playthrough[edit]
The game's harder second playthrough adds additional Spike Traps throughout the stage, including several located right on top of the ground. Several horned frogs will inevitably jump into them and die. The most notable addition is a wall of Spike Traps blocking the right side of the Empty Block bridge, requiring the player to jump above the low ceiling to proceed.
